Honestly, producing anything resembling, well, anything using this kit without any prior in-person instruction is pretty impressive! My uncle is a disabled, retired veteran and started doing pottery a few years ago as a hobby and kind of therapy, and has become quite good at it. He recently came to visit and brought an extra wheel to leave at our house, and we had lots of fun while he gave us a crash course in throwing. It really is something for which hands on instruction is hugely beneficial. Even just a couple hours with someone showing you how to prep the clay, center it on the wheel, and the basics of shaping the clay makes a BIG difference. So if anyone has any interest in pottery, find a beginner's class in your area to take. It's totally worth it and you might find that you absolutely love it!

Was going to suggest this its a buy that keep on giving if your a plant lover and want cute things
@@SilverTune yes if your drilling ceramic and glass keep it wet the drill bits cause alot of dust and the bit will over heat if not wet and can cause shattering, also ware protection equipment. For metal ceramic and glass be shure your area is free from flammable materials do to sparks . For plastic make shure you watch for melting as this can ruin the pot and drill bit .this helps

Speaking from experience as an art teacher, I think the clay is too dry. I've had to rejuvenate 50 lb blocks of clay that had completely dried out (which is as hard as it might sound. And time consuming.) For throwing clay on a wheel, it needs to be much much softer. Massaging water into the clay might work... it depends on the specific kind of clay.

@@elizabethh9935 What I wouldn't give to have a pug mill for my classroom. But alas, I get a $400 budget for the year for my 870 students. Hence I recycle and reclaim clay to stretch the budget as far as I can.
I've been a potter for 30 years Katie, both making and teaching throwing on the wheel, and I have to say, for a newbie just winging it with only an inferior product to hand - you did AMAZINGLY WELL. I've known people who had to have extensive instruction to get to the point you ended up at, and I think even an expert would have had trouble making anything really nice on a wheel that flimsy, with clay that shoddy. Two thumbs up to you, Katie, all the way!
As someone who has been doing pottery for years, I highly suggest taking a day class with an instructor and a real wheel and better clay. I guarantee that it will be less frustrating/more satisfying and nothing is better than having someone to help guide you when things go wrong

I majored in ceramics in university and focused mainly on wheel throwing, and tbh this is pretty impressive for being brand new to this method and not having a ton of info/instructions provided! I admire your persistence. ☺️

To be fair, sometimes with these toys, the pedal doesn't even have an adjustable speed! It's just on or off!
I recently got some soaps from you after years of debating. I was always kinda nervous because you use almond oil in your soaps and I don't know if I am allergic and I have bad excema but I've been using the soap for a little bit now and I love it. It's been like a day or two and some of the excema on my hands is already clearing up. I am so happy with my purchase

To get the clay to stick to the wheel you have to first dry off the wheel then slap the clay down super hard. After that you smith the edges out and then you wet the clay and shape it. I am not trying to be rude just a tip for the future.

I took a pottery class through my church when I was 9, made my mom a sweet vase.... Years later I find out she never displayed it because everyone thought it was a bong!!!! I look back now and I am like wow.. pottery was not my strong suit lmao.
I got a much older version of this kit in the 90s when i was a kid!! I must say, it was much bigger, red and yellow, and came with massive blocks of clay and refills could be bought. It came with tons of stuff even gems to put into the pots. It was difficult but i made some lumpy cups and dishes lol. Hard to do when 7 years old, but I always enjoyed it! I also recieved a plaster pouring/molding kit which was SO easy i wish at my ripe age of 29 i still had it haha id defo recommend trying one with your kids if you can ever find any! Altho kits seem to be less quality these days than in the 90s. My mom bought me a plaster pouring fossil one too once and it was super educational and fun i still have what i made. My dad got me a plaster kit that made a lion statue. Both were easy!

Loving the intro, lol. 'Nobody asked for this' I'm almost positive we did! I love watching you try craft kits of any kind! Very surprised how well they turned out, especially after seeing how much you struggled in the beginning. You have so much patience though, I would get bored after an hour.
I live in Wisconsin and this summer we replaced part of our basement walls. While they dug up and pulled out the dirt, my children found a layer of clay. They made footprint molds of our cats, as well as many other items. Dried great so I sealed them up for the kids! Wish they kept a few chunks of clay out for future projects!

Yes! You could use the river clay to make cups. When you put it to dry, put it in a plastic bag with a damp cloth, that way it dries out gradually. If it dries too fast, it cracks
I saw her not wedging the clay and if they didn't put any instructions on how to wedge the clay that should be a crime. Also I saw your comment about the different types of clay and you are totally right! They have white clay and you have red clay. White clay is generally less rough, but I prefer red clay because I think it's more sturdy (even if it is a little sandpapery).
These kits barely have any instructions, so I doubt there was anything in there at all about wedging. It really should be a crime.
When I was in college I took an "easy" arts and crafts course doing something like this. Your results FAR exceeded mine.

Planters with no drainage are meant to be used as a decorative outer pot that the nursary pot drains into.... :) acting as pretty and drip tray all in 1.
I took a pottery class in high school just like your mom. I miss it despite the fact I was miserable at wheel throwing. What I will say though is that a plate shape is significantly more difficult than a generic pot shape. You did good for a first attempt with no instruction!

Planters without holes in the bottom have their place. You're supposed to put an insert inside them to hold the soil, one that sits lightly up from from the bottom. They allow you to water less, and less often, and the plant can reach roots down to touch the standing water below the insert.
When I took art in high school we were allowed to do whatever we wanted as long as it was art so I always worked with clay. I tried the wheel and wasn't good at that, but I really liked sculpting. One thing I learned how to make was slump pots which were really just bowls. You use a rolling pin to flatten the clay at around ½" thick, trim the edges, then lay it over the bottom of a bowl or cup depending on the shape you're going for. The results were always really nice. I loved that class.
Katie, I know your frustration. I was looking at a degree in fine arts and was taking everything I could at our community college which included a year of a studio art that was not my major so I took ceramics. I loved the clay but the wheel and I were never friends. Second term, first day I spent the whole 3 hour class trying unsuccessfully to center 1 lump of clay on the wheel. I wish I could add a picture of my squirrel rattle I made for an assignment. I discovered that I love hand building. I definitely enjoyed watching your attempt with bad clay and a bad wheel. It was doomed but nothing real supplies/equipment with someone experienced couldn't fix.
Oh Lord, Katie! You are far braver than I. My Grandma had a real pottery wheel and made all kinds of cool stuff. When I visited and was very young she'd make things for me to paint when I visited. I am much more comfortable with ceramics. Which my Grandma had a shop. She taught class and I became very good at it. Where I live now, there are no ceramic shops. I miss it a lit at times!

Not to mention the absolute mess involved. I imagine the clay stains would be EVERYWHERE, knowing kids, the ceiling included.
@@KARMAZYNA Not to mention on themselves. You'd basically have a small, sentient clay mold by the time they were done.
Tip #1: The Pedal is there for *control*. Not just to turn it on and off specifically. I'm not sure if you can tap the pedal gently on that kit, but that's actually the point of it. I think that switch on the wheel itself is just to keep the kids from draining the batteries.
Tip #2, Kneed the Clay. Much like what ToxicGinger said, the Clay was probably packaged super dry and it should be softer. but I do think you can probably kneed it with a bit a water as I did notice that it looked like it got softer as you kept adding water.
Tip #3: practice getting your piece centered as you push your piece back and fourth while it's spinning. It won't look as weirdly lumpy and wabbily if you get the hang of centering first without making anything. You were trying to open it up before it was centered and it was causing frustration because it kept cracking as you did so.
This was mostly from me learning when I was in Collage, as a extra carriculum for my Fine Art Degree. I discovered though I do enjoy the more old school wheel without the peddle and you had to literally spin the wheel with your foot. Took a lot of time to learn how to do it, but totally worth the learning the method. (but for beginners, I do suggest learning with the pedal because it helps in learning the speed you're suppose to get right and the feeling of it, so when you do try the older method, you have a bit of an idea what you're looking for and adjust)
These turned out very cool! I remember I wanted this as a kid. I didn't get it, so I made some pots out of natural clay. I really liked them.
Idk if anyone else has mentioned it but with using an actual wheel, you use a bat tray thingy. You throw the clay onto the tray and then center it. There’s a delicate trade off between the amount of moisture you use being not enough or too much. You can use basically any clay for the wheel just the difficulty is a little different.
I am SHOOKETH. I've watched most of the videos on this kit by other creators in the past and figured there was no way in HECK that you would get anything nice from this low-quality "toy". I'm so happy with your results!!

I would just like to say I work for a home and garden company. And we make pots with and without holes. Without a hole is called a cachepot and is more decorative. We make fake flowers that can go in them. We have spent so much time on whether or not a pot should have a hole or not. So just want to throw out our side of things lol.

You have to prep the clay and work it in your hands for a long time before turning it. You’ll want to burp it too. Less water as well!
(I’m in Texas too, you can collect creek bed clay to use! Creek beds are the best to gather clay!)

One craft you and your kids will love using the wheel for is what my kids did with one years ago ….cut a circle of strong cardboard or thin wood and use double sided foam tape to stick it to the wheel . Use drawing pins or similar to attach some thick paper and turn it on , then using a marker gently touch the pen to the paper and as it turns you can gently move the marker in or out to make a pattern changing colours as you wish to get your artwork to your wishes ….my kids spent hours doing this …as a kid I had a record player we used to stick a circle of cardboard shaped like a record on and do the same thing …hours of cheap fun !

Btw Airdry clay and normal one are usually very different to work with. I think you can find some workshop in your area with artist who can let you use wheel and teach you how to use it. It will be completely different experience:) also there is other technics to work with clay without wheel and make really nice things:)

I learned in pottery class that the clay should be pretty wet, like it was your first try, to make it stick to the wheel, you literally smack it down into the middle of the wheel. That helps it stick better!
I only buy planters without a hole, they're a cover pot. Put your plant in a plastic pot with drainage holes, then put the whole thing in the planter. Means no leaks, you can bottom water to avoid pests, and looks cuter 🤗
These look amazing, considering your experience level and the kits limitations. Your patience and perseverance were key, I think. The planter would be perfect for an airplant. No soil or drainage required.

I'm a ceramicist who throws on the wheel and this is by far the must amusing video i've ever seen 🤣🤣 i laughed my head off 🤪 you should do a real workshop, its so much fun!
Tip: clay is to hard so put in abag with a little water and let it rest, clay may not be wet when placed on the wheel otherwise it wont stick and you first have to center the ball before drilling the hole in with you thumb. Good luck!
I had one of these things as a kid .. like 30 years ago, I ended up using it for painting instead! way easier than finding clay, and made some cool (to me as a 10 year old) splatter painting things

Amateur pottery kid here, you're supposed to seal it to the wheel by pinching it against the wheel. Its not supposed to be hard, it's actually supposed to be quite soft, your wheel is also supposed to be dry, your hands aren't stable enough, and your wheel will never be fast enough. Its easier faster actually.

it's actually really imressive how good your instincts are without having any past experience with a pottery wheel. it's such an intimidating skill to learn even with proper in person instructions, you would probably be great at it if you took a class

I had this when I was younger! Might have been an older version, it was about 10 or so years now. But, I remember never being able to work it and getting frustrated, so I just made whatever I wanted free form 😅 Nice to see it hasn't changed all that much

I seriously am loving the timing now of your videos Katie. I remember arts and crafts in school! I used a pottery wheel,glazed my work for the kiln. Used band saws, a torch. Did enamed work on a had hammered copper candy dish. Worked with acrilic, made picture frames ECT ECT!
Ugh! Having taken multiple pottery classes and LOVING them- even though I am REALLY BAD at it! - it was frustrating to watch this video. Katie - clay work is unbelievably amazing - but not as easy as you would think!! Take a few hours and do something fun for yourself. Find a clay studio and do an intro class. You WILL NOT be disappointed!!
I had this exact wheel growing up. Also yeah you can make stuff out of creek clay you just have to filter it a few times and fire afterwards or it will break

You did pretty well, Katie! Throwing a pot on a wheel isn't easy with the best of materials. I was an art nerd in high school (all the way up to Advanced Placement, Studio Art 5 baby, whoo hoo~ got a 5 out of 5 on my portfolio that had to be sent to the College Boards for credit, braggedy brag brag, which I promptly did nothing with😜 ). I used to dread prepping clay for throwing on the wheel. My art teacher used to use dredging clay (technical term that just means kneading and pounding the heck out of it to get any, and I mean ANY, air bubbles out so that your stuff doesn't explode in the kiln) as a punishment! Act up in class? Here's a pound of clay to work on for my next bell's students to use. Ouch. talk about sore arms! 🤣 I also remember using a manual kick wheel for pottery in art class in middle school (then Junior high). Man! Your legs really would get a workout. Electric is better! PS: If you do this craft with Lily and Will and you want to cut the pot off the wheel without the string thingy that was supposed to be in the kit, try a length of dental floss stretched between two pencils. Just keep the dental floss taut and use a gentle sawing motion, keeping the floss snug to the wheel, sort of sliding under the pot.

It’s funny you put this out today. I, earlier, noticed one of these kits in the back of my closet (unopened) from couple years ago when I went to print up some labels. Wasn’t sure what I was gonna do with it but now.. maybe I’ll have a look see 🤔 - likely too old to use at this point but better to check than let it continue to collect dust n
