As someone with slightly below tailbone length hair I can help with this. I love wearing my hair up in different styles. It helps me retain length plus, instead of using tons of products to style it, braids and vintage styles are wonderful to experiment with. I dont care to impress people. Plus, many women see my long hair at times and say it must take too long. No it actually takes less time to pin it up and go about my day. 😊

      @NoraRoisin 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +20

Exactly! It takes less time! My hair length used to be about yours, though quite thin at the ends, and it was very easy to wrap it up on itself and pin it up on my head. Probably under a minute most of the time to comb it and do that (because of how I washed my hair, it wasn't very tangle-prone).

I agree!! I’m so done with feeling like I have to wear my hair down to “look good” even at weddings. The fact is I get more compliments when it’s done up nice than when it’s down since I cannot be bothered to learn how to style it. Anytime it’s been styled for events in the past, the smells of all the chemicals, the texture (straw-like), and the effects the next day are simply not worth it for the “look” that was supposed to be achieved, which ironically only lasted a couple hours
Now that I’m a mother of toddlers - it is up. All the time. And why shouldn’t I? I can’t make it look good up, it suits my face, to me is more feminine (which I personally like) and it’s protective of the hair length I love which is long long hair. Nobody else loves it as much as me, but that’s something I’m ok with. My hair may be my joy alone, but it is my joy. I shall revel in it.

I LOVE THIS!! My hair is to my knees and people ask me allll the time how long I’ve been growing it and people I know have asked me why I have it so long if I always put it up. I tell them that I don’t have long hair for anyone but me. Having long hair isn’t about showing it off. It’s mine and I will wear it however I want on any day just like anyone else.

Asking why have long hair if you always put it up is like asking why workout if you’re just going to put clothes on. You do it for yourself, to make you feel good. It’s a process to be enjoyed, a ritual to take comfort in. I used to ask myself why I was trying to grow my hair out because “what’s the point” but since I’ve cut to pixie cut, I miss the process, the ritual, the pampering. If it’s not something a person has an interest in, they will never understand the point.

Fantastic video. I have waist length hair and people ask me this too. If I wore it down every day it would get completely trashed by the wind, getting caught on zips and buttons etc. and wouldn't be waist length for long! Wearing my hair down and loose is for special occasions, in the same way I wouldn't wear a ballgown every day because it's impractical. As you say it's nice to have the choice.

I know I am three weeks late, but I just have to post on this. I am 77 years old with long hair. I had to regrow it after cancer years ago. My older friends are just perplexed why at my age I have long hair. They want me to have what I call the older lady hair cut. Short and tight to the head. They say I look “younger.”I just can’t have short hair. I grow my hair for myself as it makes me feel feminine. I do not understand how we think short hair is easier. For me it is not. I am so happy with my hair. Now it is just a joke between my friends and I. Some people just can’t let this issue go. I laugh it off. I also have a the same view of my hair being an extension of my body. It is not necessary to show it off. Look at all the cultures who cover their hair. thank you so much for this video. It is so encouraging!!

Thank you Katherine. You are such an unloading to me. I'm 53 and have ALWAYS wanted to grow my hair long, wear historical clothing and live in a log cabin with a wood cookstove. Unfortunately, I have always let others around me to "talk me out of it" so to speak. I was told for so long that these were silly ideas and impractical and so I never followed my dreams. I truly regret that. I wish the internet and people like you would have been there when I was young to encourage me and show me that it could've been done and given me courage and confidence to do so.

I am 52 and have had long hair which would get snarly under neath so then I’d have short hair, then long hair, then short hair and then it started getting so thin in the front, I whacked it all off and bought wigs. It’s fun being able to go long and then short, but my hisband hates them and whines when I I change them out.
Super short hair is cute and mostly easy, I can dry it in less than three minutes, but I feel feminine in long hair. I have started to let it grow. It;’s still short, but I’m trying some of your techniques in the hopes of my hair returning to some semblance of hairs past. It may never be the same, the color has changed of course, but it’s much softer than it’s been in a long time. Thanks for the inspiration.

I, also, heard discouraging words from others about these same desires that you have. It took me a while but I FINALLY am doing what I have always wanted. I am homesteading here in northern Calif. with my DH. I have hip-length hair, wear vintage clothes - some that I sew on my 1910 treadle machine. Hi, I am the original asker of this question. I am autistic and have a very bad habit of asking excessively blunt questions. I did not intend to offend you, and I sincerely apologize. In my case, I do love my long hair for the visual effect. It’s not that I am trying to impress others, I just like to surround myself with beauty, and when I see my hair flowing, I think it is beautiful. I didn’t consider that others enjoy their long hair for more than the visual effect. It was very interesting to hear your perspectives, and I appreciate that you took the time to make this video because of me, although I feel terrible that I was obviously so hurtful to you. Also, in reading the comments here, I see that others took my question very personally. So I apologize to the rest of your viewers as well.

Don't worry about it. It's a valid question. I grow my hair long so that I can put it up. I have horrible straight, fine, thin hair and in order to wear it short, I would have to blow dry it, style it, and use a ton of mousse and hairspray just to get it to look decent. It's too much work. When it's long, I just twist it up and put a clip in it, and I'm good to go. Plus, I don't have to spend a lot of money on haircuts.

This is a really interesting topic and I think that you can see similar psychological mechanisms in many other areas as well. What I noticed is that the people are very quick to see all the costs and downsides of alternative lifestyles. "It's too much effort, too much time, why bother when it doesn't even matter". The problem is that ALL lifestyle decisions come with costs. As you've shown, the cost of following the mainstream approach to hair care is hair damage, objectification of ourselves that leads to unhealthy relationship with our bodies that may lead to a range of other mental problems etc. In the end it always comes back to the same question: what matters to you? This tunnel visioning honestly really puzzles me. Many of the mainstream lifestyles are extremely unhealthy on all levels. But because they are mainstream they are just accepted without question and suddenly you are the weirdo for trying anything else. More and more often I just find myself keeping quiet and choosing to only share my true preferences with people who I know (or at least suspect) will be open-minded about them.

People cut their hair off after break ups and major life events. Its like cutting off an old part of themselves and their old lives and starting anew. By the same logic, keeping your hair is like staying connected to yourself, and I feel like that's an important part of why lots of people keep their hair long. Hair is so intrinsically linked to who you are, whether other people like your hair or not. We keep our hair pinned up to preserve its length and protect it from damage, and keep it clean. Hair that is damaged needs more attention and haircuts than undamaged hair. Keeping your hair up becomes a simple, quick daily habit like brushing your teeth and stops it from tangling and snagging on things. Ultimately, hair is an expression of who we are, and we need to take care of ourselves.

@Katherine sewing - I LOVE how you talked so articulately about how different cultures and eras have viewed (and still view) hair. ‘An extension of the nervous system’ - what an excellent way to phrase it. I’ve encountered that concept in comments elsewhere but I’m more familiar with the idea of hair being an extension of one sensuality and thus covering it up - to me this isn’t oppression, it’s a natural progression of the thought that not everyone wants that on display for all.
I also loved your rabbit trail! The corset as shield and the resulting efforts we now have when all there is is one or 2 layers of thin filmy fabric between us and the world really resonates with me. I have lately been wanting more of a shield between my body and the world but unsure how to accomplish that without simply wearing lots of oversized clothes… thank you for taking the time to explore that idea!!

You do you, absolutely. Your hair care videos are what brought me here and I’m grateful for it.
I get a lot of comments on my hair, maybe most especially because mine is all grey now. There’s definitely a stigma about older women having very long hair and wearing it down is frowned upon often enough in my experience, anyway. However, I also get compliments on it and sometimes I feel like it’s the surprise at seeing someone my age (61) with long hair, who also (sometimes) lets it flow freely. Regardless of others opinions, I love my hair now and that’s all that matters. I’m growing it because I’ve never had long hair. I’m growing it because it was always a dream of mine to be that “older woman” with the hip length, pretty, grey hair. Who knows if I’ll change it up once I’ve reached that goal? I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it. And, yes, I also find it easier to maintain my longer hair than when I chose shorter styles…for sure!
Thanks again for you informative videos.

Love this! I too am 61. Part of the reason I have long hair, past my waist, is in rebellion of what modern society says a woman should look like. I stopped dying my hair at 40 was turning gray at 23! but still kept it about shoulder length. Somewhere in my 50’s I rebelled again as I had so many telling me I should have shorter hair. I have received comments about my hair related to this, but only recently really had the question of 'why try to have long hair?' (or something to that effect). It wasn't even 'why have long hair if you wear it up?' but why at all. It's as if having short hair means you don't have to care for it, or that it is necessarily easier to care for it (I hate having hair in my face or past my ears, so to have short hair might be infuriating, and not really suit me if I were to wear barrettes to get it out of my face; that doesn't tend to look that good on me).
My reasons are that it feels more natural to me, I really want to enjoy beautiful hairstyles, I would like sometimes to wear it down (like Eowyn and other LotR ladies)... somehow it feels like health and wholeness to me. I think I also want a connection to the past through it, as it has been more normal to care for hair than not to throughout history. I feel more grounded with it. I have feared people thinking it is stupid and unnecessary, and purely out of idealism, but I am growing a bit more confident about it (and I won't stop it just because people think it's unnecessary).
I also feel that how my hair grows, how thick it is, is a sign of the health of my body, and so it is a very useful metric to use for evaluating my health and improving it (and seeing evidence of that improvement). It's a lot better than waiting till one has a debilitating level of deficiency in something that one have lost most of one's hair and one also developed a serious health condition!
I also could say to such a person, if we had had traditions of caring for hair well, I might never have to go through this long process of figuring out what works for my hair now. But because we treat our hair like it can handle extreme conditions, I have to go through all the trouble of figuring out how to keep it healthy and cleanse it on my own which is a lot more work than knowing a specific method and sticking to it.

Normally I don’t comment on videos but I just have some reassurance for you: just because you are DIFFERENT does NOT make you weird. I’m a high school teacher and do I think there are some weirdos out there? Of course I do…but not everything is weird just because others can’t understand it.
I personally love how you teach curlys to care for our hair the way you have (and the lessons you’ve learned along the way and mistakes not to make) and it’s actually helped me to know what to DO with my hair other than having it down 100% of the time (I’m a mom of four, so it was often in a pony when it was in the way or when I didn’t have time to style it).
Don’t let someone else rain on your parade just because you have gorgeous curls you know how to care for properly (and take the time to) and the success you’ve had sharing it with others. You keep teaching us curlys how to keep up with our hair without frustratingly chopping it all off because it’s “in the way” or “I don’t have time to style it” (because that’s what I’ve told my hairdresser before).
Thank you Katherine, for all of the knowledge that you share!

@@KatherineSewing an updo is not the issue, for me at least. My issue is with how greasy your hair looks 99% of the time. I just cut 18 inches off mine (the last foot was damaged but I've figured out the problem) to restart my growth journey. My hair is thin and straight as a bone and grows really fast. I wear it up most of the time. My husband loves my hair long as do I. Not his choice but mine. I allow him to enjoy it. It's got to be clean and shiny. For me. Once a month I oil my scalp and weekly the ends. It's grown about 6 inches since I cut it. Washed it's beautiful, oily it looks like crap but those are stick and bun days. Then I wash and completely detangle it. 5 comb teeth to get it there and it stays detangled even after sleeping in a bun stick configuration.

I very much appreciated your well-thought out reasoning, and your choosing to share it with us. When I realized the question you were answering was about "why" you wanted to grow your hair long (if you were going to often wear it up), I also realized that my answer to that question was much simpler: long hair makes me feel like myself! I also do like being able to wear it different ways, rather than being locked into "having" to wear it only one way with a shorter style. (I tried that in college with a 20s era bob and it drove me crazy between having to style it perfectly every day to get it to look right and having all those short hairs getting in my eyes when it was windy - it looked cute, but it really wasn't me!) Very much enjoying this month's hair challenge, as I am trying out some new things which I hope will help new hairs to grow (my hair is almost waist length, but it never recovered its thickness after my post-pregnancy fall).

What a wonderful, well-rounded answer that's perfectly genuine to you, but also to others who choose differently. I've pondered this question, too, particularly as it relates to hair for the sake of beauty alone. I never quite found the answer, but you summarize it perfectly. Can I add to the discussion that long hair is a means to an end when you prefer wearing it up in elaborate ways or are required to, as in the case of classical ballerinas. I'm having plain old fun growing my hair this way, so let's not forget that! ❤

I've got long thick wavy auburn hair cut by a ouidad stylist. The longest I ever had it was down to my belt. I mostly wore it in a French braid. When I wore it down it stood out about 2" from my back like in ancient Egyptian wall paintings. . Ouidad cuts really help my hair to taper off at my back.
I stopped using a comb about 20 years ago. Now I detangle my hair from the bottom up. Then I go to the sides of my hair and rake it upwards and then shake curls from the bottom. Since I gave up on the thick spaced comb and brush, my split ends have gone away. Yeay!

Embrace yourself girl ✊🏼ain't nobody got time, but i appreciate you taking the time, cuz that's what you do... its kinda like once you go through all the tender lovin care to grow your hair, you want to PROTECT it!!! (Im just now getting to waist length with 3b hair, if you have curly hair you know that s* is not quick or easy but I've made it!) You hair becomes your baby! I can bet you this had to be someone with short hair asking that question! 😂 Showing OFF your hair isnt the best thing FOR the hair!

I have between 3b-3c hair, thick and curly, and i'm presently on my hair growth journey (it has always been passed my shoulder blades but a lot fell out and it became gradually thinner due to stress and environmental factors and just losing track of proper care) and now that I educated myself it's slowly growing and close to my mid-back, so glad I found this woman as I never knew anything about historical hair care.
If you don't mind me asking how much time did it take to grow yours waist length?
And I agree, my hair IS my baby and I cherish each strand like gold!🤗

I can't leave my hair down anymore. I grew up in a humid climate and my hair was down all the time with no problems. It was frequently as long as below my shoulder blades. I now live in the desert. The dryness. Oh the dryness! The tangles and snarls and knots have been horrendous! I've been keeping it up every day for four months with no idea of how to fix the issue. I'm now trying to ditch shampoo. Three weeks in, wish me luck. It's been impossible in the past.... but this time is looking promising. And this morning I got a brush through my hair without wanting to swear like a sailor. I am wearing a silk hat at night as well to minimize frizz and tangles. It helps a lot. Now I'm going to watch those protective hair styles videos. Thanks!

I can understand why the person may have asked that question. Me personally, one of the main reasons why I want to grow my hair long is for how I will feel every time I see and feel my healthy long hair, and for ppls awe and amazement. It helps me feel better about myself and that’s why I would never want my hair to be up once I grow my desired length. However, everyone is different and has different reasons to why they want to grow their hair, so constantly having it down may not be as much as a big deal as it is to a person like me. I don’t feel like this person was trying to be malicious, just curious and inquired a bit bluntly.❤️

I love all your tips and tricks and protective styling has helped do wonders in growing out my hair. I absolutely love the points brought out in this video especially in regard to freeing your mind with letting go of societal beauty standards and instead embracing what makes you happy. For about a year now I have been wearing a headscarf and although I am not muslim I find them beautiful and I love how they make me feel when I wear it. It also has alot of practical reasons too but mostly it's because of how free how beautiful and how covered I feel. It was a challenge to let go of the worry of what other people may think of me and just be happy being me ❤

The purpose of having healthy, long hair, even though you wear it up all of the time, is so you don’t look, excuse the expression, “skin’t.” I am 60 years old and have always had very fine hair. But in my youth I had a lot of it! As you age, things change. So I am slowly transitioning to Katherine’s hair care so that my fine, and now far more sparse, hair has it’s best chance to grow long enough to look nice when pulled back, which it how I always wear it, instead of looking like I am balding and have a little bean in a clip on the back of my head.
Getting old is not for the feint of heart. Thank you for experimenting on yourself for our benefit, Katherine. I love your sewing videos, also.

The two braids is flattering. That color rocks on you, too! I've always had long hair, it gives me a more feminine look. I'm 6 feet tall and have a more masculine face (my son is 6'8" and looks like Frankenstein's monster) so wearing the braids in a crown gives me an elegance and feminine "power" that works better on me than the short hair. There are also practical considerations. In the desert, the hijab is very important to protect the hair from wind, dust, and sun. In the West, originally the Celts and Vikings were extremely vain about their hair, men even more so. This is because of the color as well as the climate being more hair friendly. I have red hair, so I identify heavily with being redheaded, so hair is an important part of my self image.

People over there don't do the weird granny haircut like in America which is a style I will never understand. My grandma always has her hair pinned up in a bun. I wear a head covering and get questions like this too.
Why do I cair about haircare, growth, etc. if I don't show it
And the answer is: "For me and my faith"
I dress modestly, yet I care about my physical health and appearance even though I don't show my body.
Modesty It's a practice of self control.
But it's not self control if you don't have anything to flaunt lol
Scripture teaches that a woman's hair is her Glory.
Which means that it draws people to her. It makes people aware of her.
For example, the Heavens is God's glory.
So part of practicing my faith is drawing people to God and not myself, via His good works through me..
Also, Jesus teaches that when we do things in secret, like fasting for example, the Father sees.
And He knows that we're truly doing it just for Him and not to impress others.
So by me taking care of His creation, my hair and my body, and not showing it to others.
He knows that I'm doing it out of love just for Him❤.
Being grateful and appreciating His creation.
And again, this is just one of MY WAYs of practicing my faith.
This is what I've been led to do as apart of my growth in holiness.

The connection long hair has to femininity is really important. Short hair doesn't feel like ME. Long hair makes me feel like a beautiful, graceful, elegant woman. Hair is absolutely a connection to our psyche. That's why people cut it after breakups. It's like they're cutting off an old part of themselves. So, by the same logic, not cutting your hair off is keeping the connection to yourself.

This was so good to hear! I have curly long hair (getting closer to my waist), and I almost never wear my hair down. For one, in the summer it's just too HOT. I can't stand it on my neck. Plus, it's frizzy, so the more it rubs across my back, and jostles about during the day, the worse that gets. I usually feel somewhat out of place among my friends and acquaintances (I'm 45), since everyone else is the exact opposite. The usual hairstyle is just simply down with nothing in it at all. Even with my hair down, I must have some clips or something...it's way too thick and in my way to not have it pulled back in some way. I almost exclusively wear my hair down only when it's in braids. Usually one or two french braids. Anyway...I loved this!

I too believe my hair to be an intrinsic extension of me, certainly not to outwardly impress. I work in pathology and wear my hair up in a protective bun every day, of course to protect it but also because of the industry I work in. I trained out of school as a hairdresser, i was very good at it. But as time went by the fact that hair was simply seen as a fashion accessory or as something that you went and got zhoozhed up the make yourself feel better got harder and harder for me to enjoy my job.
I have waist length hair and have followed a similar hair treatment to yourself for about a decade (side effect of knowing the chemical make up of modern hair products) and i wear my hair up in a hair pin or in a braid 90% of the time. Also I have for many years considered it sacred and as a connection to my spirit for sure.
Thank you Katherine for all your videos, and for bringing yourself to answer this question xx

Interesting. About 20 years ago I decided on a whim, I was going to grow my hair like Éowyn's or Galadriel's. (I still am a huge LotR fan... 😅) As my hair is naturally light golden blonde and wavy and I gave it a couple of years, 4-5ish I think, I actually came pretty close. 😁 I didn't really know about protective styles and the mainstream lifestyle was to wear one's hair down all the time, so most of the time I did that. I took pride in my hair & heard a lot of compliments on how beautiful it was. But over time it became somewhat of a double edged sword for me. Because my hair was the first and most obvious thing to notice about me, I kinda got lost behind it, when I wore it down. So much so that some people didn't even recognize me, when I chose to wear a bun or even a headscarf. On some photos my whole upper body "drowned" in hair. So (after a breakup and at the beginning of 8 months of backbacking...) I cut it to shoulder length, later to a chin length bob. And I loved it. The short hair gave me visually a lift. It was a lot more maintenance, but I still like the shorter hair a lot.
But. Now, after a couple of years I see all these cool historical inspired updos pop up, that don't take a lot of time to do - and would love to do that again. Wearing it up could be visually similar to my shorter hair, but more versatile. And I do miss my long hair once in a while, I remember feeling more connected with it than with the short hairstyle. So maybe there is something to your argument. I mean, not for nothing hair has spiritual meaning for a lot of peoples.
And then there is the practicality of longer hair. I'll be moving to the sea in April and with all the wind, it just is easier to put it up than to be constantly annoyed by having hair in my eyes and mouth.
After all, I'm watching your content about growing long hair... I'm not there yet - but also I have been putting off cutting my hair again for two years now... 🙃

When I was a teen in the early 70’s my hair was almost waist length and I wore it down and un- styled. I guess it was more of a thing back then to have long hair, but not every girl did. As a young adult I had it shorter but not short hair. Later I still liked my hair to be as long as it could be but I wore it up a lot; it’s just practical and I never felt that it was silly & why not just have short hair then(?) For one thing as a mother I couldn’t afford to get my hair cut every six wks at a salon, but besides that having long hair that is worn up is a style in itself and I always had the option to wear my hair down or in various up styles - it’s so much more versatile & fun, and costs little to nothing to have a different look. Lastly I have noticed women with short hair spend just as much time dealing with their hair, it’s care & look so it’s really not easier. It’s just a preference. Mostly I see long hair as more feminine & pretty. But some women do look great with shorter hair styles.

I have ankle-length hair and I wear it in a taped crown every day. Hair this long is NOT common, or even very socially acceptable in the west. Keeping my hair up and private keeps this aspect of myself and my personality private as well, and people are more likely to pay attention to what I say instead of what I look like. I loved the description of how other cultures have thought of hair as an extension of the nervous system. I definitely understand that concept, and it feels like that to me sometimes. Our bodies are for ourselves and our own, private lives. It's easy to forget that in a world that has so many public expectations, but it is no less true now than it has ever been.

I have not cut my hair for over 10 years. It's naturally strawberry blond and it's about to where the bottom of my back jean pocket on my jeans are.
My hair length and my integrity in it is from a core biblical point of view and in my identity in Christ and in obedience to what the Word says. I also see it as just another appendage to my body which is why I don't cut it off also, why would anybody cut off a limb if it is part of them. That is exactly how I feel as well it's nice to have that in common with you. And yes our brains definitely are different from the world's point of view and how they see things. Also scripture says to have long hair as a covering, because I am not married at this time I do not wear a head covering to church but I do still wear my hair daily up or down as my covering. 1 Corinthians 11:15
"And isn’t long hair a woman’s pride and joy? For it has been given to her as a covering!"
And As a testimony to the angels, the woman is to have authority on her head (some translate “a symbol of authority on her head” in 1 Corinthians 11:10). It is often understood that Paul is suggesting that a woman should cover her head because of the angels; however, Paul actually says that the woman has “authority” or “power” on her head. This authority refers to the headship God has placed over her, based on the order of creation and illustrating the church’s response to Christ. Paul explains that is the reason the woman naturally has long hair: it is a glory to her, and her hair is given to her as a covering (1 Corinthians 11:15) and can serve as an illustration of her role in the matter of headship.

I really like, how you put it. This scriptures give me riddles still, but maybe I'm not consequent enough in my asking, searching and praying.
I'd love to grow long hair: it's been my dream as a girl, got forgotten later when it never passed shoulder's length without cutting it, and is back now. Still, most of it don't grow more than 5-10 cms. And I'm wondering about what covering I received... But still, He's made me wonderfully, and I will hold unto this even when my hair won't grow despite protective styles, MSM, careful cleansing etc.
      Greetings in the Lord

I love having my hair long for a few reasons: 1. I feel good about it (it's for me), 2. Guys admire it, 3. I get compliments on it all the time (though I think that might be because the pride and care I take with it shows through), 4. I don’t have to pay for extensions to style it, 5. Because the haters can all go hate on me from their own little corners of the world, I just don't care.

I wouldn't answer a question like that. I'd respond with a question. "You seemed bothered by that. Why is that?"
I have long hair. I liked wearing it down. But I worked at a company where one of the women would touch my hair without my permission. Even when I told her not to tough my hair, she'd come up behind me to tough it. She did it so often that I complained to HR which was useless. I was called unfriendly by the HR person. So not only did I start wearing my hair up, I covered it too. I love having long hair. But it is NOT an invitation for anyone to touch it or even to comment on it other than to say, "your hair looks nice."

I like this! Yes, answer their question with a question. People can be so annoying about different hair. In school my hair was much curlier than it is now and people would always want to touch it which made me feel like I was a museum exhibit.

Girl, I'm with you one hundred percent! Like you, since I was a little girl I always wanted to have long hair, but my mother always cut it because it was easier to take care of. As an adult, I didn't know how to look after it, because it's curly and when I brushed it it was awful. But now that I'm fifty years old I decided to grow it out, because you see, life is too short and I don't care what people say. It's my hair, my life, and my choice. Even if people don't understand why I wear it up all the time, it makes me happy when I put it down and it's almost at my waist. I love my hair silver and long! And I love your videos, I've learned a lot already. Thank you so much for being there for us!

My mother always had upper back length to chin length hair, so I didn't even learn how to braid my hair until I was an adult and I'm still struggling to do buns. Hair care is so important.

Hi Katherine. My hair is the opposite of yours. That is to say, it is fine, thin, and salt and pepper. I ran across your hair oil video a few years ago. For the first month, I used your plan, oiling my hair every other day or so, and washing it once a month. this was a bit much for my hair, but I just adjusted how often I oil my hair and I decided not to use clay as it was very difficult to manage rinsing it out, etc. I substituted Dr Bronners tea tree which is very diluted. I wash my hair when I feel that I am not getting all the dust out by brushing or when I have been working in the garden doing pretty dirty stuff. When I started, (2020, I think) my hair was shoulder length and I have not been able to grow my hair any longer in my whole life (I am 62). My hair is now down to my waist in the back. The hair oil is great, not just for growth but also dandreff doesn't stand a chance against that stuff. I like having long hair because it is just easier to take care of and protective styles look nice and tidy. If people ask me why I don't wear my hair long I usually say, because I like to wear it up and I don't look good in short hair styles. I also love the top you are wearing in this video. Can you tell me the pattern, if you used one?

My great grandmother was raised very strict. She had to be covered even her neck. Just hands face and hair. No makeup and hair no shorter than her waist. I loved spending time brushing it. She showed me tons of styles. When I was little I thought she was magical. She was a blank canvas since she was always covered and her hair was her art. One day she didn’t feel well and took her to drs. She was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian CA. She declined very fast. She told me she wanted to put her paintbrushes away and be scandalous before she passed. My Aunt came that night she’s a hairdresser and she cut it to a short bob. Put her in a tank top said gone wild. We donated her hair so someone else could paint. Sorry just needed to share.

I agree with you completely. I have worn my hair in so many lengths and styles, when I became a grandmother I said enough! I’m now 65 and have long gray hair.. I love that I don’t have the same style as most 65 year old women and it’s so easy to care for. I wear my hair up most of the time also. We farm in the Midwest, it’s windy and cold in winter, hot in summer. It’s not practical to wear your hair down.
My goal is to grow my hair like my great grandmother, she passed on at 88 and had the most beautiful long white hair!

Wow loved your answer @katherineSewing totally agree simply caring for yourself and your hair is an extension of that self care . Beautiful . As a woman walking the path of a priestess and healer in the Irish indigenous spirituality hair is a massive massive deal. Hair holds memory and wisdom. Medicine women, healers, herbalists in the past would not dare to cut their hair for the wisdom it Holds. It also acts as an antenna to spirit allowing us deeper downloads from spirit/god/ source. I have always had very fine short hair and watching your Vidoes has finally given me the confidence and skills to grow my hair which is vital for the path I am now walking 💚I am never ever going to a hairdresser again. Thank you for all that you share. Much love from Ireland 💚

While I currently have the longest hair I have ever had in my life thanks to your videos, I have nearly always had at least shoulder length hair (though I could never get it longer than that for any length of time). I once cut it really short thinking it would be less to take care of. Ummm. Nope. My 3C hair was SOOOO much more maintenance when it was short, just to keep it from looking like I stuck my finger in a light socket was a daily battle! Long hair and a bun every morning, and a braid for bed at night, is totally the way to go and WAY less maintenance.

@@lovalova9363 I'm not sure if you're asking Katherine or me but I'll answer. I don't use a boar bristle brush until at least day 4 and I don't use it to actually brush my hair. I use a Tangle Teezer for daily detangling and I oil the ends of my hair daily. It does take until like day 3 or 4 until my hair stops being so frizzy, depending on the humidity.

This is definitely an interesting conversation. I feel like many people see the default as “hair down.” So wearing it up is because it’s bothering you or just to get it out of the way so instead of doing that, most people cut their hair shorter so it’s easier to wear down all the time.
I’ve had hair to about bra strap length and wore it down most of the time. It’s also curly so I guess actually it was longer than that but appeared bra strap length. But with kids, it was harder to maintain and I went shorter and shorter and still wear it up a lot. But I find the shorter it is, the less I like how it looks and the fewer ways there are to style it. So I think that’s part of why I’m growing it back out because I like the way it looks better when it’s longer and because I now realize that I can and should style it in braids or other updos that I really never did when I was younger. I either had it down and loose or in a ponytail or messy bun. No wonder I got bored of that. I’m looking forward to trying different hair styles as it continues to grow.

(just my personal self monologue that nobody asked for lol) admittedly, this question has popped into my head whilst watching your & similar content. i do see my hair as an extension of myself, * and * self expression is extremely important to me. therefore, i want to be perceived as having long hair. i’ve always predominantly worn my hair down and prefer it that way aesthetically and physically (wearing my hair up has always hurt my scalp and induced headaches). i don’t think i’d ever want to wear my hair * predominantly * in protective styles (i still try to occasionally at least). so that’s my personal dilemma with it ;3; it’s like a catch 22 lol since my hair tends to break off at a certain point but i want it to grow past that ! alas. we shall see if i ever change this lol. thank you for all your information, i’ve been enjoying listening to it !

My hair is 77” long and I have grown it long off and on over 50 years. I wear it the way I want it and it is much, much easier and cheaper to keep it long, The length your hair will grow, how thick it is, etc., is determined by genetics. I process it the least I can and the few hair care products I use are the cheapest I can find. It is thick, shines and is very healthy. It is not affected by what I eat, my health or how stressed I am. I almost always wear it braided. A few people have asked if I ever wear it down, but no one has ever asked me why I always wear it braided. I often have been asked if it is mine.

I haven't learned how to wear my hair up since I started wearing it long a couple of decades ago. Clips and pins always fall out and ponytails give me a headache. I wear it long because I have always loved long hair--not to impress but I like lovely things. Also, I began to resent the prices stylists charged. If I keep my hair one long length, my husband can trim it once a year or so--for free. Covid made my hair fall out, so I chopped it off--like you did. It has thickened, so now, I can let it grow longer than mid-back. I hope to learn to wear it up. All this background to ask a question--how do you keep clips and pins from falling out? BTW-I have five kids, but they are in their 30-40s.

Thank you. I am and have always been an individual...a person who doesn't follow the fads, a person whose reason for doing pretty much everything is because I like it and how it makes me feel about myself. It has nothing to do with anyone else. After seeing a few of your videos I decided to use the boar bristle brush and Scalp Hero...oh how I love them! I'm in my mid 50's and dye my hair because I don't like me gray. This activity, past surgeries, health issues and my age have left my hair partly frizzy (I have curly/wavy hair naturally) and I wanted to "heal" all of that damage. This new routine has and is still bringing life back into my hair and that makes me feel better about myself...not to mention the relaxation the routine gives me. My hair is just passed my shoulders and like you, more than not I wear it up. So again, thank you for being you and letting people know it's okay to not conform to societal norms. God bless you!

Long hair is associated with femininity, and femininity is very controversial. One of the paradoxes of modern feminism is that women should be like men, yet men are objects of hatred and derision. To emulate men, women are bullied into wearing their hair short. Some more militant feminists wear their hair in an actual cropped male style.
Those of us who wear their hair long and/or reject dressing in immodest modern fashions in favour of styles inspired from the past are making a powerful statement.
And if we don't obey the WOKE narrative, freedom of speech that contradicts it is not exactly given a ticket to ride.
We are saying something powerful about our love and respect for femininity. We have self-worth, so do not go out like a stripper who is 3/4 of the way through her act.
    I own the power 😊

I'm dying to watch the video, but I just want to see if I can answer it my own way before getting influenced.
I was first inspired to have long hair by my sister. Until I was 5 or so, my mom always cut my hair in a neutral gender flop style. But one day as I was watching my 10 yr old sister brush her hair, which was not longer then most people's, I reallly wanted my hair to be as long and lovely as hers. I think that love of long hair has ALWAYS been a part of me, but that moment with my sister woke it up.
Most of my life (I am now 19) my hair has been the same length as Katherine's is now.
Most of the time I had it up, not because I knew about protective styling, but simply because that's how life works: you have long hair, it gets in the way, you put it up. It's basic logic.
But when I was 12, I cut my hair to a chin length and I HATED it. It was SO traumatizing. My long hair had become the biggest physycal part of my identity, and losing it was like losing a giant part fo myself. I was sad and depressed and anxious and all the negative emotions until my hair grew out again. Every inch gained was an inch closer to being myself again.
For me, long hair is not about showing off. Long hair is satisfying, not because other people see it, but because I see it, I know it's there, I want it and I have it, and that is enough.
About wearing your hair up, three things:
    1. My experience with both super long, super short, and medium length hair cuts has shown me that if your hair is HOT or ANNOYING, it is BETTER to have it LONG because long ahir can be tucked away much more effectively than short hair.
    2. Protective hair styles are BEAUTIFUL. And there are so many options! You can get really basic or really creative, and either way you look great!
    3. You might wear your hair up all the time, but it's there , and whenever you want, you can take it down! But if you have short hair, you can't make it grow at a moment's notice.

I have long hair that I wear up mostly. Long hair is easier to care for than short hair because that needs styling. For updos the longer the hair is, the more you can do with updos: you have the length to do wrapping braids in the style, it has more volume etc. For me personally, I just like long hair, short hair looks bad on me, but I also am just in general not a fan of short hair (sorry if that insults people, that is just my taste) and that isn’t just women, men as well. My partner can grow way nicer hair than me (obviously I’m jealous here)

Hi Katherine...first thank you. I came up on your channel by accident. I was going through divorce and post divorce emotional stress and noticed my long hair was falling out in chunks. Drs said nothing physically wrong. But this is when I realized my hair is literally a part of me. I desperately searched for ways to fix this not ever thinking to give up my normal routine. Ive been divorced 5 years but have been trying your method successfully for one year. I cut my hair to shoulder length a year in a half ago because I felt embarrassed. Today my hair is at the tail bone same thickness at the bottom and top and loving the routine. I also always put it up and get the same question
My answer? Because I love it! In the privacy of me. Where everyone is in everyone's business I love it for me.
