    I bought this gun back in 2011 on my 21st birthday and I've put many many rounds through it. I put a full grip from Hogue and it completely transformed it to something I can shoot all day.

    Started my 30 year career w/an issued revolver in 1968 & it saved me more than once on the street. Back then we all carried a J Frame off duty, a smaller version of our service revolver, and I continue to carry a J Frame in retirement. With hip & back issues a G19 is too bulky & heavy for this retired senior citizen. Also, that latch on the left side of the frame is a cylinder release, not a barrel release.

    I know this is three years later but here is my two cents worth. I carried a model 37 in my pocket as a back up on patrol for many years. I removed the hammer spur to prevent snagging. But I could still operate it single action by staging the hammer and then cocking it with my thumb. As long as you let off the trigger after thumbing the hammer it is safe. Any slip will not discharge as the safety bar will prevent it. I had no trouble qualifying with it out to 50 yards. A good friend of mine kept pestering me to buy it after I went into CSI so I sold it to him. I've regretted it ever since. A model 37 is a great pistol.

    To tell you the truth having 5 rounds to protect your life is better than no rounds or no gun. I remembered I was living in an apartment complex in Chicago and it was infested with young gang people who were getting killed and apartments broken in to and getting killed. A five-round will protect you , don't underestimate the revolver.

    Beautiful little revolver. I took mine to the range for the first time yesterday and ran Winchester 138 grain rounds through it. This little gun was accurate enough to allow me to reliably hit center mass almost every time at a range of 15 feet, which is prime self defense distance, and I hadn't fired a handgun in at least 20 years.
    The recoil is not to be sneezed at. It's a pocket cannon. But a pocket cannon is what you want for self defense and now that I'm comfortable with the gun and know what I can do with it, I feel safer when I'm in a potentially dangerous situation than I did heretofore.

    I bought a model 642 because it was on a crazy sale for just $299 at the local gun store back in 2019. I was already carrying a S&W Shield as my CCW but to get a high quality S&W revolver for that price as a back up gun was a no brainer. So I got the revolver and practiced with it at the range. I didn't like the stock grips so I installed some Hogue grips and it made the gun 100% better to shoot! Now this 642 is my daily carry. I really love it especially in the hot summer days when I wear as little as possible. This is my "always" gun. As they say, the best gun to have in a fight is the one you have on you! And this one is always on me. Some people complain about low capacity, but hey, isn't that what a speed loader is for?

    I have owned one that I carried for several years before switching to semis for more firepower when my lifestyle threat changed to being more terrorism than robbery. Now keep it at home as my bedside quick responder and always very confident that it will function if called upon.
    Must say however, I have never found it fun to shoot. I shoot it enough at the range to ensure reliability and my competence but it will never be the pistol you label "fun to shoot" and I am often surprised at how many men I see buying it for their average shooting wives because they think it's handy. I find that it hurts the palm and as such I can't see the average lady shooting it often enough to get good at it.

    • @jakeblack7784
      @jakeblack7784 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The recoil is dependent upon the ammo. Using a very light load is not bad at all but using plus P is miserable. There is always a tradeoff with firearms. A great shooting handgun won't be light or deep concealed but one is much more likely to have it on them.

  • @southernloff1494

    Congrats for a nice info vid. Mine is my basic carry, w/Remington 125gr Golden Sabre rounds, which-from this weapon-penetrate 14" of ballistic gel, with expansion of .60+". That will ruin anyone's day-no matter where placed. Despite the ideas of needing 'hi-cap' mags, etc., the plain and simple fact about close-quarters personal defense, is that when you fire the first round- the personal attack is most likely over, other possible assailants involved will be running. Now, call police, clear your weapon-and hire a good attorney.

  • @ripcanadams
    @ripcanadams 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    That Hornady critical defense plus P is a good round even though it’s only a 110grains, I seen some good real world testing on it. 13” of penetration and same diameter hole as 357mag and or basically 9mm. Really can’t go wrong with a Smith 38spl snubby! 👍🏻

    I traded my 637 for the 642 hammerless , it’s better for pocket carry and with practice in staging the trigger it is an accurate gun to 15 yards
    I CCW in rotation Glock 26, 34 MOS , 29 & 40 long slide MOS and no matter which Glock I CCW for the day I ALWAYS take my snub .38 642 in my pocket and between my car seat while driving . I may race to corner store without the Glock but I ALWAYS packing the snub 😁

    • @thorman944
      @thorman944 ปีที่แล้ว

      i'm actually considering replacing my G43/43x with a 637 due to the ability to cock the hammer and actually hit the mall shooter at 40 yards. I can hit an 8 inch steel plate at 40 yards 60% from a sub-compact 9mm or 380. but i can it an 8 inch steel plate at 40 yards 100% from a snub nose revolver if fired in single action mode. the lighter single action trigger allows for more long-range accuracy than a similar sized micro 9mm. folks need to remember that in a semi auto, the chamber is considered in barrel length. my 3.4 inch barrel g43 only has 2.3 inch of rifled barrel vs my snub-nose with 2" barrel that has 2" of rifled barrel. Parkland Indiana shooting prettymuch proves that a 'wonder 9' cannot hit at 35 or 40 yards even with a shooter that can connect 100% at 28 yards. A G34 is pretty silly. Just carry a Beretta 92fs. Same round count, same size, less recoil, faster followup, and more 'man points' because it is a metal frame gun that is combat proven. Show me one after-engagement report with a g34. I can show you 15,000 with a m9.

    • @buddyringo21
      @buddyringo21 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thorman944 92fs is a fine gun , not my preference though. Daily carry for me is my Glock 26 and I shoot it better than my g19 why? Probably due to the heavy recoil spring . My g34 is a dedicated nightstand gun with TLR-1 HL and night sights.
      The airweight and g26 are with me daily .
      Congrats on you shooting abilities.
      Mission dictates equipment . If I'm going somewhere there is a higher probability of fuckery I will pack accordingly . At the end of the day it's a numbers game and it pays to be prepared .

  • @CharlesBecket
    @CharlesBecket 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Beautiful gun, but according to your comments at around the five minute mark you wanted 1) a pocket gun, and 2) the ability to choose single action. The 637 is not a true pocket gun but the 638 is, with its shrouded (snagless) hammer, and also allows SA. The 638 is a hybrid between the 637 and 642. My point is I think you would have been better served with a 638. Regardless, the 637 is a beauty. Enjoy it. Be well.

    • @jakeblack7784
      @jakeblack7784 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      No, I'd much rather have the 637; it's fine that people think differently. The "problem" with the hammer snagging has never been a problem and I've carried in the pocket many decades. I do use a pocket holster, of course. The J frame revolvers shoot very accurately especially single action and the hammer makes it more versatile.

Maybe one of these days, I will. But it's been 5 years now, and so far, I'm still in love with my F frame. I replaced the synthetic grips with the old classic wood grips, and like it even better. It shoots like a dream. My other carry is a Rock island Armory m 206, and which gun I carry depends on my whim dujour. I also use Hornaday Critical Defense.

    hi there! terrific video! i just learned a lot about good ammo... its all about expansion and achieving FBI standard penetration 12”-18” in gel. the rest is low recoil for good shot placement. btw the Hornady in your video is awful ammo... at best it expands to .48” out of a snubbie... i found and now use the Federal HST +P Micro... with a whopping .73” average expansion achieving an FBI 13” penetration and low recoil for a +P. this is the magic bullet i’ve been hoping for! its all about Area x Length = Wound Channel and the bigger the Area the higher the chance of hitting something critical. when you run the Area equation (yes i’m an engineer) hitting 1 shot of the Federal is like hitting two shots of the Hornady.... cause its more than TWICE the Area wound channel... its like changing your 5 shooter into a 10 shooter... check out the comparison at the lucky gunner site... the lab section. your wife will appreciate the low recoil :) have a good night and stay safe! :)

  • @SquireSCA
    @SquireSCA 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Most defense situations are close up, 3 shots and last a few seconds... Cops might need lots of firepower, but the average citizen encounter? Not really.
    Simple and effective. Also, if someone jumps you and is literally up on you, or you are on the ground... If you have no room to work with and have to jam the gun against their ribs and start firing... The revolver will work. Most semiautos will get pushed out of batter and not fire, or if they fire once that close(making contact), they will more often than not cycle that first time and then snag on their clothing...
    Like you said, the revolver can be fired inside a jacket pocket, for the same reason...

      It is known as the 'lawyer lock', which will prevent 'unauthorized persons', from using the weapon. This came about as a result of several law-suits. It involves using a 'shaped key' to lock/unlock, the action of the weapon. The only significant function of the circular key access-located above the cylinder release- is to destroy the ascetic appearance, and compromise the design of the handgun.

      That's with a "standard pressure" round. Better ammunition will, of course, have more higher pressure loads. I have seen up to 950 fps with +P rounds out of a snub nose. Of course, if you really want some firepower, then get a snub nose 357 Magnum! But it will hurt.

      Anon Namus it’s very lightweight and concealable. I do not like to carry IWB at all, so this was the logical choice for me for OWB and it’s very concealed. Practice, practice, practice. You need to be a marksman with it up to 20 feet or so and I am, it just takes practice.

      @@keb107 One of the main thing's I was looking for with my purchase, was a piece that's EASILY concealed...I heard this one was a basic point and shoot, especially with the edition of the Laser, but I will Defintely be at the range ASAP!

      Anon Namus I carry mine in my pants pocket sometimes, it’s that easy to conceal. The other thing I like is the trigger pull, I think it’s about 6-7 pounds. It’s not gonna go off accidentally in your pocket or waistband.

    As a former 637 owner let me tell you why I got rid of that overpriced substandard revolver. The grips are small for concealment but attract clothing, the trigger is horrible and the barrel was canted, as they often are. The fit and finish, often cited as the reason you pay more for a S&W is no better than other brands. So much for S&W quality, the old ones yes, the 637 is over priced and inferior to less expensive alternatives. If you like the 637 you are either unaware of the alternatives or are a S&W fanboy. Now, I do own other S&W revolvers and yes they are exceptional firearms but not the 637 airweight.

      I, for one, am very sorry you've had issues with your 637, Will. S&W has excellent customer service. It appears like you are having some problems with your revolver. Contact S&W and they'll will take care of those problems. I have used S&W Customer service myself. They took care of an issue I had with one of my firearms. They were courteous and quick in returning my firearm back and there was absolutely no cost to me. They even took care of all shipping costs. I found their phone number by simply googling Smith and Wesson. Good luck.

    • @LA_Commander
      @LA_Commander 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you don't like the factory grips you can easily change those out for some quality aftermarket ones. The J Frame revolver has a huge following in the aftermarket so there are tons of choices out there. I changed out the grips on my 642 and it made the gun 100% better to shoot and carry. Sorry if you feel badly about Smith & Wesson quality but I have owned many guns over the years and Smith & Wesson is tops when it comes to revolvers. Having said that, there are defects in any brand of gun from time to time and if you were to contact customer service I'm sure they would fix the issue for you free of charge. You really should have given them a chance to fix the issue you were having, rather than just write off the whole company and bad mouth them like that.
