I love the Russian love of Italo Disco. Seems to me to be the have your cake and eating it too type of nostalgia. Nostalgia for the relative equality of the soviet era, the good times of the Perestroika era, while being able to create an imagined past that had access to the good things of the west while preserving the good things of the ussr. To watch these types of videos now, Italo stars lip-syncing the hits for Russian crowds a decade ago. It breaks my heart now that the USA has backed Russia into a corner to the point of war. And so now, perestroika and even the relative detente of 2013 being nostalgic things, the longing for the hope of the late 80s becomes the most bittersweet thing. The potential of Reykjavik 1986, the hinge point, and all that has been squandered by the bad faith of the US and its allies. It makes songs like this important, markers that we can rise to our potential if we choose, however often history shows that we do not.
I'm a big fan of the new wave music and I thought it's awesome to put together an event like this. But I just can't help but wonder why the performers weren't singing live. Was it the organizers' idea to have the performers not sing live or the performers' preference not to sing live?
