Mowing Sorghum Sudan for hay - 2022!

  • Hay season continues for 2022. We are mowing our Sweet Six BMR Sorghum Sudan grass with the Mahindra 85p Tractor and the John Deere Moco 630. Drone video! The drought has reduced the growth of the Sorghum Sudan and forced us to mow it down for hay since seed head development has ramped up. Next year we plan to use a PPS (Photo Period Sensitive) version of Sorghum Sudan which forms seed once the daytime daylight falls below 12 hours 20 minutes per day which is late September for us.

      There’s a difference between Sudan grass and sorghum Sudan.

    Sure nice to see our Flag waving from the mower (about 11:00)! Thank you for that.

    We are down in limestone county. It is so dry. Got it in when it was still good.

      Thanks for the reply. With this drought it looks like just one extremely disappointing cutting is all we will get. Praying we get rain for the fall so i can plant a winter grazing crop. Good luck.

    How does the flail do on Sudan I’d thing the rubber rollers would be better

    • @navarrohillsranch
      @navarrohillsranch  ปีที่แล้ว

      Rollers are better for conditioning. The tine conditioner works but it takes more time to dry versus rollers.

    Do you need to hurry and plant something right after harvest in order to keep the Sudan from going to seed. I’ve noticed some grasses are stimulated right after a mow and start going to seed again in a matter of weeks. Cool channel by the way.

      Or do you disc/ cultivate everything back in after hay is picked up? Thanks!

      In our area forage Sorghum Sudan will regrow after cutting and baling. We usually get 4 or more cuttings per year but in 2022 the drought was soo bad that we only got 2 cuttings.

    Why Do Not also use a Front mowing atachment?

    • @navarrohillsranch
      @navarrohillsranch  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Main reason is because my tractor does not have a front PTO or 3 point attachment. Front PTO is an expensive add on .

    Nice video, are you making rounds or some squares. good luck in baling and keep safe friend.

      @navarrohillsranch  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We are making rounds this time because of the heat. Hopefully we can eventually get some rain and make more hay. I will try and do square bales next cutting. I liked your video of trading baling for dirt!

    Was it hard to get it to dry out enough to bale?

    • @navarrohillsranch
      @navarrohillsranch  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really, we had a bad drought last summer and the daily highs were right at 100 F everyday with low humidity. We let it sit 5 days and the moisture while baling was under 13%. It turned out pretty good but with the drought we did not get much hay.

    U need front linkage on ur tractor for a mower

    • @navarrohillsranch
      @navarrohillsranch  ปีที่แล้ว

      My next tractor will have it. It is an expensive add on here but I see the benefits of it after watching other TH-cam channels.
