I use flash on normal bait hooks. I have used anything from crystal, xmas tinsel, coloured wool, and feathers. In my experience and what i watch on YT expecially fishing gum underwater footage getting fish to find your bait is 80% of the battle. I believe flash and shinny colours work 100% in attracting fish to your bait. My goto for my area is 13m of water little dirty (visable to about 4-5m on a good day) is crystal flash and/ or tinsel and i add a UV glue finish. This is on a bait rig and its way more effective than a basic hook. As you stated to much can scare fish or turn them off. We have a saying big baits for big fish, a big head bait deffently doesn't get touched by the little picker fish, but a big one smashes it whole. As for flash on jigs your knowledge is all ways amazing. Really liked this video and your insights 👍
There's a difference in the usefulness of flash in shallow and deep water, people need to understand this. At 13m, light is still quite bright and flash could be of help for sure. and at times...even little things such as putting a bit of flash on bait hooks helps. 100% agree. I have done this before as well....gold hooks offer the same sort of appeal..
master salamat sa technical ideas mo, tama nga naman. below 60m everything is grey. may i add as well the last color that may sustain below 40-60m will be green, orange and pink. next topic naman yung epektib din ba yung mga uv lumo colors.
Couple of things- first off thanks for another awesome video :) Really enjoying your channel. Regarding drag, it's kind of a double edged sword. On the one hand you get the parachuting effect but on the other hand, it makes it easier for a fish to "suck" the hook towards itself/in. I know from experience flyfishing (40 years now), especially using blobs or boobies (you know what these are I'm sure) that they get deep hooked far more than any other pattern because when the fish displaces the water in front of it during the bite the increased drag means that blob will get sucked in much deeper than say a chironomid would (which is basically bare hook and incidentally, most often get hooked right on the lip). So, I think in deeper water you might actually benefit from flash, especially when chasing larger fish whose mouth size more than make up for that 2-3 inch gap because of the parachute effect. I'm just basing this on experience with flyfishing patterns, of course, and I haven't got any hard data for jigging but I'm guessing flash can't hurt your chances of a fish inhaling your hook. Other thing- do you find that you don't need to put a base wrap of thread down to help adhesion? No matter what fly I'm tying I always lay down a thin base of thread to help with material adhesion, just because I was taught it fell under "best practices" but to be honest I doubt that it makes a difference and tying to the bare shank. I'm going to try that second method on my next assist hooks where you just leave the thread on to tie down the tag end..I like that, super clean! Cheers and thanks again. Awesome stuff.
Adam, the fish will only be able to "suck" the hooks in if they are in the right place...if they are trailing behind or in any other position, all they get is metal. Try to look for a major manufacturer that has flash on their deep water assist hooks. I'm not talking about copycat brands, We're talking about Owner, Gamakatsu etc. Over the years, they have gathered data that supports this. However, there are manufacturers that cater to this sort of thinking, like that manufacturer that's named after a famous monkey. But guess what, those guys are not in it for the correct things, its to earn from people that think flash actually works in deep water. Same strategy some companies empoy when they sell spinning slow jigging gear. Tying with a base is always a good idea, but I found that depending on your gluing technique and how tight you bind things, it matters little. With flies, you can't really torque down as much as you could with braid...(I use thin fishing braid). If I use the same drags on the bobbin holders I use when I tie flies, the threads will break before the spool turns...its that tight.
Been using a bit of flash on many hooks in recent years, generally with great results. I don't use on everything, just occasionally to see if it makes a positive difference or none. Found it's really good for helping weed proof single hooks on my metals - bit of bling doesn't hurt but avoiding a string of weed dangling behind is way betterer than anything else I've done. Just going from trebles to singles is a huge improvement in hook up rates and effective fishing time by not snagging weed for me. I'm going to have to invest in a vice and bobbin for tying things up much neater from your advice. Enjoying getting into a new thing. Just realised I have dozens of jigs in my metals collection going by the shapes - now I know why I have done so well letting the lures sink, they are fluttering or sliding and I'm just by fluke jigging instead of simple dragging in of a metal at high speed - or trolling along with the boat... If nothing else your channel has opened my eyes to something I had never even considered doing. Cheers from Oz.
It's so hard to get people to understand this in conventional fishing dude. For a lot, more flash is good, but the few that really know...also just keep quiet.. :| @@flytyingzonedavehise
Do you have a video on what the proper hook size should be for some these types of jigs? I have several of the smaller ones (with an assist hook and a treble hook at the bottom) and I am wondering if I should just make an assist hook that is a little larger that the one that came with the jig and take the treble off of it?
Thank you for the video. I have a question. Do you know if you tie flash inside gap of the hook it helps turn hook points up when jig falls and reduce snags? I tried myself but did not find any difference.
I have a video of this...Owner does it as well (look at the owner give away video) Firstly, it's about the hook, the hooks need to be thin enough for the amount of flash you put it, if you used heavy hooks, you needed more flash for the hook to turn upright. Also...the type of flash you put it, crystal flash creates more drag because of the twists than flashabou. It takes less crystal flash to turn the hook than flashabou.
Hello Mr. Ray Chen, they work the same way, but in some instances better because some squids glow or prt of them glow - this method is popular with dogtooth hunters. Thank you for asking Mr. Ray Chen - very good question even of you know the answer already 🤣
Hi, thanks for the video you provided - great information. I’m very interested in the tying vise you were using. Can you tell me who makes them or sellls them. Cheers

probably down the line.
Thanks Kit. The flash was next on my list to become more educated with. So this video was perfect timing 😁.
This is sort of a big topic for a lot of people. :)

Nice to know that I am of some help :)
Absolutely.@@TheFishingKit
You make me understand clearly way, when and how I use flash.
Thanks again Mr. Kit
Glad to hear it!
On a side note, in freshwater, we dont use any flash if the fish are heavily pressured because it tends to spook them.
what about for the flies to tie in saltwater dude?
I usually use flash for bones and redfish but GEETS I usually don't use any. If I do it's 2 or 3 strands.

I explain this in some of the jig rigging videos.

Great video Mr. Kit. What do you think about those little plastic squid skirts? Are these work same as flash?

I will add a link in the description so people with similar questions see it as well.
Another super nice video! Thanks for the information! I'm learning a lot! Best regards from Spain
Happy to help!
Finally the one i had been waiting for. Nice content. From your nightowl fan 👍🏻
Hope you enjoyed it!
Do u think its worth getting grappler slow j or is there something better for the same price?
those rods are very decent. not 100%, slow jigging, but way better than some of the "us" brands for sure.
I don’t know why anyone would say no to using flash. I notice fish tend to hit flash more.
Watch the video for the reason why.
