Lyra Pramuk: Quanta | Manchester Collective

‘Quanta’ is a departure from Lyra Pramuk’s career as a solo artist, and a consolidation of her classical training into her first major chamber work, written for Manchester Collective.
In an ensemble, players are typically expected to adhere to a strict sense of time, with a rigid tempo keeping everyone together. 'Quanta' discards that entirely. Inspired by 'The Order of Time' by quantum physicist Carlo Rovelli, time is instead flexible - and any moment in which the ensemble plays together is a happy accident. "No one should lead or conduct. A traditional sense of time in this piece does not exist” reads Lyra's instructions to the performers.
In her own words: "There is no universal time. 'Quanta' explores the notion that each of us has an individual sense of how time traces through our lives. This can feel lonely or liberating, depending on your perspective."
