    There’s nothing new about that style of sail. We had them on sailboards back in 1983. It is a way of inducing twist in the sail in particular sections in response to changing wind strengths. This may be an easier way than reshaping a mast or changing masts (if allowed under the rules).
    Similarly, closing the slot between the foot and the deck (i.e. no gap between boom and boat) was also the de facto standard in sailboards from the early 1980s but it took 40 years before it was widely taken up in the A-class catamarans, the highest performing development class which trained many of the crews in the America’s Cup over the past 10 years.

    OK lads, I grew up in the mountains so know zip about sailing. I see that the mainsail is a different shape from earlier and that you are calling it a 'batwing' sail. I see the narrower, than previously, top of the sail and the two points out from the top and a third of the way down. What is that telling you? More mechanical options for shaping the sail? For expected higher winds?

    • @abatesnz
      @abatesnz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Rob but it could be aero as there's a thrust-drag trade off.

    • @dwnorris
      @dwnorris 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@abatesnz Yes Andrew quite right. The higher up the sail you have pressure the more righting moment you need. Reduce the power at the top and shift it to the bottom of the sail and you get more power for less drag with better righting moment. ETNZ also has a bigger mainsail area than the other boats in the lower third. The mast/hull interface is fixed in the rule. Which is why ETNZ has the "cutout" shape. Their Mainsail extends below the mast plinth effectively increasing sail area at the bottom and also dropping it below the effective hull line. It's absolutely genius!!! And check out the top of the sail at 3:45. It is inverted to the bottom. So they are using the top of the sail to push the boat upright. These boats are something!!!

    It's not a new idea. It's a cut down sail area for high winds, reducing the area higher up the mast lowers the centre of effort, the battens are kept longer hence the batwing. The lower COE headsail makes it look dumpy. Lowering the centres reduces the chance of a capsize. American Magic used a batwing main as well. Great video. Good luck with the lockdown.

    Those things are meant for reducing tip vortexes. As the wind slips off a foil, the different pressure and speed of the air on each side makes a spinning slipstream, causing much drag. That’s why many airplanes have winglets at the end of the wings. The lower protrusion is meant for the same as the top one, but for the disturbance caused by the jib top.

    They have added drag on the main without adding lift, I don't get the bat wing thing.
    May not matter too much because what really matters is drag under water. Water is 870 times the density of air.

    • @jaygee5693
      @jaygee5693 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Drag does really matter above water too, one reason why jib selection is critical.
      Larger jib gives more power but, in stronger winds, with resulting higher speeds, the extra drag negates the power gain.

    • @Kiwi17714
      @Kiwi17714 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are inverting the top of the mainsail during high winds to maintain the balance with the foils. The inversion adds tons of drag. Removing sail is less costly.

      @@mitchand9 LR are nearly maxed out on speed. Their design in my view is not capable of much more speed. I wonder if when declaring your suits of sails you can put down both the mega size mainsail and this batwing smaller one? American magic had that option. I was very surprised that Ineos in their 20 day "shed time" failed to properly upgrade their main and foresail combinations. It made me suspicious that other plans are afoot for Ineos businessmen and rather than put money into an outside chance of winning they are investing in this future AC37 joint venture with ETNZ.
