Good morning
So the betta fish tanks look great, but odds are there are about twenty in the back with more general purpose, 1 galloon, with hornwort and frogbit tanks in the back. I used to go to a small petstore, and I worked there during slow season for a few bucks. They had a similar set up up front to make the betta fish more vibrant looking. In the back they had a bunch of one galloon holding tanks that housed the rest of the stock, that was primarily just gravel, frogbit, hornwort, with a bit of driftwood in there, all connected to a sump filter with more frogbit, hornwort, and pothos that was also connected to large tub bins with schooling fish like tetras and the like. None of the fish looked unhealthy, and did have to pull dead ones all the time, but yeah. Front tanks for selling, back tanks for holding. But they still cared about their fish to add some stuff to the minamlist holding tanks (NGL, they really loved frogbit and Hornwort)
Frogbit, hornwort a bit of driftwood in a 1 gallon, connected to a sump is a far cry better than the urine sample sized cups bettas are typically sold in. I'd still be far more likely to buy from those holding tanks than the cups. It still shows at least some care for the bettas.
The dead ones were probably already lost causes since the shipping process can be very hard on them.
yea sounds bout right
That doesn't sound pretty but it would make me far more comfortable than the 16 oz deli salad containers......
@@mokko759 Fortunately the betta fish tended to have pretty high cycle rates, so they didn't tend to be in the 1 gallon tanks for more than a couple of weeks.
My primary job was to make sure the water was clean, everything was filled, and the bladder snails didn't make it to the display tanks.
That "squid" is actually a cuttlefish! They're really cool creature!
wups
To me, it looked more like a squid than a cuttlefish. Hmm…looking at the eyes, it might be a cuttlefish… I wonder what species of either one it is.
@crusmonster1397 On the cuttlefish, the fins extended the whole length of the mantle, whereas on a squid, the fins only cover the upper third to half. I'm certainly no expert, but from the tiny bit of research I've done, this seems to be the case.
I was wondering if it was a different species! I remember reading somewhere that it's impossible to keep squids in captivity because they have very particular husbandry needs and it's difficult to replicate their natural habitat in an aquarium. But with how quickly this hobby is advancing, I wouldn't be surprised if we figured it out soon. Some saltwater aquarists are even starting to keep nudibranchs successfully!
I would cuddle with that fish.
I like how the owner of the tank at 7:50 gave their glo fish a good life in a big, semi natural tank, rather than keeping a whole group of them in a rubbish tiny glo aquarium.
I think those are white skirts, not glofish, but yeah
If I ever get black skirts or glofish tetras I'm keeping them properly with my 40 breeder, not a 15 or 20 gallon like everyone thinks is sufficient for them
My local aquarium store has all their tanks aquascaped, some simpler than others but all of them have live plants decoration, etc... the price of each fish is slightly higher, but you pay for what you get, well treated and healthy fish that live a long and happy life.
agreed
Yes !! My local pet store have some 10 gallons for their betta fish. And every tank have plants and decoration, the light is dimmed so they're not stressed and they treat a tank if there's a sick fish in it (and refuse to sell them until it's done). They wanna know in what size tank the fish will go. That's amazing because other stores don't give a damn 🤷♀️
That’s fantastic!
love when they do give a damn
Here in Australia, the betta shelves in our pet stores are made of dozens of little tanks that all go through a sump filter with heating.
very cool! I'm always a bit paranoid if they're hooked up to the same system though cuz certain diseases can wreak havoc on all of them if 1 gets sick
Reminds me of how my lfs does it. I wish it was the norm though...
---Went to my local giant petstore (I'm on the West Coast)... No bettas in tiny cups looking so sad, pulling your heart strings. They had a setup similar to this, but without the intricate aquascape. Some fresh plants though. On the way out, I commented to the manager that it is so nice seeing the bettas swimming around happily for a change, instead of pulling on your heart strings looking at you from a tiny cup on a shelf next to the de-chlorinator. I know there is probably a shelf in the back where they aren't as loved, but it's just great to know that when new potential fish owners see it, they'll be encouraged to have a similar setup instead of just something that's better than a cup.
A pet store could do 20 or 30 2.5 gallon tanks sideways(like most breeders keep aquariums) and it would be dirt cheap and look a ton better than what most places have.
yes
I did a little thing at the fishstore i work at very recently, as in 1 of the bettafish systems they kept dying in the first few days for no appearent reason. I cleaned the tank, removed all the substrate and the little spacer wall thingies so instead of only having 1.5gal of space the betta would have 4.5gal. I also scaped the new tank with some epiphytes and built some hides out of lava rock, now not only do the bettas we put in there look healthier and have that interesting behavior that they are usually known for (i know every betta is different in that but in some way they all like to interact with the enviroment) but customers seem to want to buy them out of that tank most of the time. I will probably scape some of the others in the near future too!
great strat
Chirs over here ruining Monday’s with the “welcome back to the end of the video”
14:07 "Don't forget to get your FISH wet." That's a great reminder😂
QOTW: Not me, but my cats. They love freeze-dried minnows. It's always a little awkward to feed them those in front of my tank of comparably-sized medaka ricefish.
Stuffed curried whole red rock fish/snapper. Lemon grass, cilantro, garlic, galangal, and ginger stuffed inside, with generous salt and a home made red curry rub on the in/outside (liberally applied). Roast in the oven until done.
Good morning FTR crew!! Wishing all you awesome folks a crazy wonderful week!! If you can rescue a pet from a local shelter, it's an awesome thing to do! We just rescued a super senior black cat and fees were waived because our local shelter is so packed. The fees were also waived for husky and husky mix dogs, because I guess San Diego is a hot bed of homeless huskies! Who knew?!? Always cool to check in and help if you have the space and time.
QotW; when I got into Neocaridina shrimp I had a few weird vibes about enjoying my favorite shrimp and scallops with fettuccine alfredo I make, but things got really guilt driven when I got bamboo shrimp that just happened to be in a kitchen tank. I felt like they were watching me so it became almost impossible to cook shrimp. But I definitely enjoy salmon and barramundi or cod baked, drizzled w/ olive oil and some fresh dill, serve w/ sauteed green beans and garlic mashed potatoes 🤤🤤🤤.
I love black (void) cats
Man the water testing one... one store I worked in, I dealt with a customer who had an ammonia reading in her tank that high, that I could smell it
it's a dennerle 55l Scapers Tank it got nearly the same dimensions in width the in deepness 🙈
But also Thanks for taking my tank in your vid!! I'm a huge Fan of the FishFam
Holy smokes, such beautiful and unique scapes, so much effort put into them, these bettas are living the life even if they never get purchased, living the dream right there
That tree is definitely my favorite! And just realized, this could also be a great way to inspire fishkeepers. Like someone comes in looking for a betta, sees these *beautiful* tanks and thinks "I wanna make something like that" (and then saw a comment saying that exact thing in the video xD) And yeah was thinking about that, if people want to make a tank like that they'll be buying lots of plants and other supplies, so extra profit, and maybe even doing research and getting hooked into the hobby... it's great!
Beautiful tanks all around! 👏 And some truly hilarious memes too 😂 Not to mention the Christmas ornament we all know we want
very encouraging to see for fish keepers
@@FishForThought Very
Can just picture a beginner going in and instead of those cheap little kits they see something that and it’s just truly inspiring for them
Wow, now that's a way to spot a fish store owner with a personal passion for bettas! So pretty!!!🎉❤
That, or one with a good eye for business and an understanding that people are more likely to buy the betta if it's displayed in a nice way.
for real
I have tried multiple times to find corydoras themed plushies and artwork on Etsy and Amazon and lemme tell ya the world desperately needs more Cory gang decor
yeahfor sure...
My corydora is so chill. He just lays on the ground or swims around and tries to eat the substrate, then spits it out
Chris, you making anime references is what encouraged my husband to watch FTR with me 😂❤️
Oooh, a qotw about snacks...
I like salmon, trout, and those little fake crab pollock bites. Nothing beats catching something fresh, though. I can't wait for it to be spring again.
I like salmon, salted herring with onions (and hold it up by the tail), pickled herring in various ways, cray fish, any kind of white fish and currently eating canned tuna in a spicy ramyeon soup! The salted herring is one of the very best Dutch street foods! You have to try it!
Love how you care on how fish are kept. 🥰
“The whole ass” literally made me lol also im picky about fish- I love salmon, white fish…not super adventurous though i wish I was 🤷🏻♀️
hi man, i always love to see your videos! i have a 240 liter fishtank with a sh*t load of plants and a lot of tropicle fish. the sad thing is that my bettafish just died😞 he was a true fighter and i saved him from a very old garden centre. i gave him an awsome life( i hope) and he lived for another 2 years. your a true inspiration to me, thank you!!
great on you for giving your betta a nice life :) rip little one
7:35 that man spilt the spaghetti and thought "damn, I like that"
Coulda said "whole hog" with the motorcycle tank as a hilarious prank
QOTW: I eat a lot of fried cod. It's called kibbeling over here and it's just cod dipped in batter then fried and seasoned.
delicious
With the motorcycle tank at 11:00. There was a missed opportunity to say "Go Whole Hog" (cause its a motorcycle lol).
I wish I could have had this for my dude, a rosy feeder fish with the attitude of a freaking barracuda. He went from a quarter of an inch long and a half gallon tank when I got him, to a five gallon tank with a lid and over 2-3 inches long. Miss him, but he got a bacterial gill disease and passed. He wanted to eat the cat, tried to attack mom twice, and ate any tank mates we got him...
The iridescence of the cuttlefish is amazing.
Your outro has no reason to go so hard. It's incredible. Please tell me it's a full song. I need it!!!
Brooo the part where he says I would like to have a relationship with a squid I was like ayyyy yoooo
QOTW: any fish big enough to eat...
also shrimp...
Weirdest fish: went with a friend to her friend's cabin in the Adirondacks, where I kayaked and she fished. The lake had a shipload of bluegills. Tiny, bony, but tasty.
In the quarries where we scuba dived, the bluegills were immense, in yoir face, and liked cheez whiz and hot dogs... they'd also taste your thumbs in the underwater pumpkin carving contests in October...
I do eat seafood! Grew up on the Gulf Coast where shrimp and flounder are cheaper than beef so we ate it all the time.
Dude barramundi is where it’s at. Wonderful texture. But for local fish, I love fried bluegill or bass. Delicate and tasty.
I'm not the only one who noticed he said "Don't forget to get your fish wet" right... RIGHT? EIther way, all done bro, my fish are definitely wet... I think
I just commented on this then saw your comment. There's at least two of us lol!
U made it to the big times man! U were on my Google news feed:D
You don't need CO2 to grow a beautiful scape, just good lighting...get people hooked on the hobby in the right way and they'll come back. Some stores do sell those kind of tank "as is" where you have to buy the entire setup- they are very expensive. They usually sit for ages before they sell or get broken down into something else. Btw I think that was a cuttlefish =)
Catfish, rolled in cornmeal and fried up golden and crunchy. Preferably with a great big pile of hushpuppies on the plate as well. Now I'm hungry. 😂
When my husband and I were dating, we had to explain to his roommate that a fish was a terrible white elephant gift. I'm still not sure that he was convinced that an unsolicited live animal was not a good joke gift, but at least we put up enough of a fuss that he went with a different option.
chris casualy being good at everything.
I love my Mondays. I always look forward to your upload!
Pink gravel: *exists*
Fft: 🔥👄🔥
Everything about this is amazing!
agreed
I work in a pet store and we keep our bettas in cups, but we give them fresh water every other day and watch to make sure they’re healthy.
My local pet shop has Betta tanks like that, just smaller, 1-1,5 gall, but with live plants. There are 15 tanks, and like maybe 5 fish in small cups in the locked shelf under if there is demand (like 1-2 months of year). Otherwise they are only in those tiny tanks. I know workers there, they said the longest they ever had fish in that cup was 5 day, they are usually sold in 3 days max. And in that tanks it is like 1-2 weeks.
One of my local fish stores has betta tanks like that too. But they are just as you said. There are a few tanks for a few bettas, and the rest are in cups in the front. Although larger cups than what is at a petsmart.
I love that tree betta enclosure! How do you make that cool tree?? Love any advice so I can recreate it myself
You choose a moss or anubias or any other plants that happy to grow without soil.
And then choose a piece of driftwood, tie it onto your choice of driftwood, ideally a piece that looks like bonsai tree , they’re often made from roots of the plant that is your driftwood.
If your driftwood its missing branches to look good, you can trim& move some parts/twigs there and super glue them to the parts where you need more branches (superglue needs dry conditions to work. If the piece of wood floats, you can super glue it to a small rock for weight
)if your moss tree later gets algae, it usually need to be placed further from your light, or choose a moss/ other plants that like brighter light. Or use floating plants to give it some shade /for the top canopy. 😊✌️
That oscar (?) in the second to last clip looked traumatized
Also gonna order plants for my tank the day after tomorrow so fish are basically just weeks away :)
I agree that is a very, very nice setup for a betta display! Over here these fish are usually put with dither fish, just a single betta and say a group of a certain tetras.
super cool. In a 10 to 20 gallon I assume?
@@FishForThought Like that, depending on the size of the other fish and/or group size.
I've finally got my Cory Gang! 7 Corydoras Metae now chilling in my quarantine tank!
Just joined Patreon!
The shrimp dimension 😂
I bought 8 and I can never see all of them.
I recently did a water change and collected all 8 shrimp after I removed the logs. I was afraid of sucking up my shrimp.
After I put them back they all disappeared again 😂
**QOTW - I don’t care for cooked fish but I love sushi and poke bowls!
If I have to eat cooked salmon I make sure I have mango salsa.
Im sick and off school but this has lightened up my day😂
I love fish! Just...never in my mouth 😂
Hello! I found your channel recently and I am glad that I did. I finally found people that like fish! Great video and keep up the great work!
yay :)
10:49
I adore you for saying this I love that you said this so much and I will be quoting you on it lmfao
The best fish doesn't have to be the tastiest, it just has to create memories
Then that would be the huge whole cooked fish at the center of the table at my grandparents house. My grandpa ate its eyes and freaked me and my sisters out, while he had a good laugh about our reactions.
Don’t know what it was I just remember it’s eyes before and how it looked after and my grandpa’s smile 😂
QOTW: Def salmon. So many ways to have it. Sushi obviously, but also broiled, blackened, by itself, in pasta, as ceviche, smoked on a bagel, etc. And it’s so fatty and filling, gotta love it.
Lets goooooo i got my 55 gallon is running and in 4 weeks I'm going to have a chunk of the Amazon
Lake Erie yellow perch, YUM!!! Close second, Lake Erie walleye.
I have that issue with my red cherry shrimp. But last week I tuned in to that English shrimp expert on TH-cam and he advised to feed them frozen blood worm. So I'm trying that now. But at least they're really liking it! :)
nice!!
I love eating fish! Salmon is my fave, but catfish also has a place in my heart. Mostly for nostalgia!
I make homemade lox out of wild-caught sockeye salmon. I also make my own homemade everything bagels and homemade cream cheese to eat it on
qotw- when I was in kidnergarten, my parents had maybe a 50gal with Oscars in it. I loved it and hung out by it and there are allllllll kinds of embarrassing pictures of me leaning into the tank to talk to the fish in my bright pink princess pjs. So when I finally connected that the food on my plate was fish, and the things in the tank were fish...I was horrified. Absolutely refused to eat fish. Would NOT touch it. I wasn't allowed to leave the table until I finished my food, and because I was already a stubborn mule, apparently I fell asleep at the table for like a week. And out of nowhere, I gave in. :D I don't remember what made me change my mind, but I definitely remember the horror and refusing to eat.
I love fish on my plate still. I love a giant steak cut of tuna, fried tuna, tuna in sushi or sashimi...out of a can and mixed with rice, etc etc. Love it.
Bro, I don't even understand those water ppms, hahaha. I thought that nitrites all convert quickly once nitrates pull up. Parameters so bad, they forgot how to parameter. 🙃😂 I've never actually seen anything show up on my nitrites tests, so that's wilddd.
I love to eat fish. Even raw. I know it's trash fish but I loooove salmon in any form, catfish is veeery good too and I would recommend it especially to people who don't like fish so much (those people who can accept only panga filet 😂) ❤
I'm from Thailand and I ate a lot of Betta fish when I was young. It was a natural Betta fish and we caught a lot in a small stream running past my uncle's rice field. I also ate Rasbora borapetensis with the Betta too and it would cost like $1000 a meal if it was aquarium fish in other countries.
Salmon, salmon tobiko and perfect Japanese rice. Little bit of white and black seasame seed. Best thing I've ever ate. No soy sauce and maybe a little mirin in the rice.
I get the what you mean about becoming friends with intelligent, yet short-lived creatures. It's why I can't bring myself to keep rats, though I love them. I currently have jumping spiders, which ironically, are similarly short-lived. I'm still not sure how I'm going to handle their passing.
My Mother askt me last week wo are you crying and laughing?
I: I’m watching FTR
10:27 - is that a cuttlefish!?!?!! I love cuttlefish they are so cool!
Another grewt video u convinced me to give my guppies and neons a bigger tank
Recently had a seafood dish at a Korean restaurant...had to "enjoy" ripping off the legs and shells off of two HUGE shrimp...but they sure were yummy!
Trout, I don’t really like most seafood but I will also eat tuna and salmon and char if trout isn’t available and fish is the only option, but trout is my favourite fish to eat. I had trout once at a fish restaurant that was crusted with pecans and maple glazed, it was so amazing.
Amazon sword rubin I believe and cryptocoryne flamingo in the rare plant tank... and some others too but those stood out to me
Mahi mahi is my favorite. Pan fry with butter pepper and chili powder and some garlic
One fish alot of people sleep on is stingray, very firm fish, great for frying or steamed, the preparation is the real challenge as u need to skin it instead of scale it
TEXAS AQUATICS in North Richland Hills Tx has setups for sale like that
I like fish, my favorite is grilled wild trout or salmon (lemon butter salt and pepper, cooked most of the way in foil the browned open)
i think the petsmart here in the uk depends on the store, the guy working there refused to sell my sister a certain fish due to her tank being too small. also i do go there because they have a tiny section of tropica plants
All of the dead decaying plants are just duckweed stems due to a massive die off. had this happen to me a couple of months ago and it looked exactly the same
Another crazy petstore section 😮
yes!
QOTW: I don't eat fish, but I do eat seaweed and algae. There's a type of marine algae called blue spirulina that turns foods bright blue! You can't really taste it, but it's nutritious and great in smoothies and chia pudding.
Honestly and ironically I love crabs and shrimps. I am make a vampire crab tank now but I also love shellfish as my favorite dish. But as for fish I am probably basic when I say salmon. It has the most natural favor in my opinion.
I love that beta set up.
that fish store at the start.. where is it.. i need to fly over RIGHT NOW
QOTW: I lived in the Canadian prairies and we never ate fish growing up haha. I know it's good for you, but I have no idea what to do with it lol. Thanks for making Monday morning better!
QOTW: I don't mind salmon, or white fish with pesto or breadcrumbs. However a fish finger sandwich is the ultimate way to eat fish! Nice battered goujongs, nice roll, tartre sauce, perfect!
🥰 the Squid is so cool. Do they live longer than Octopodes or also just a half Year? Are they also such good Escape Artists?
QOTW Pikes! Walleyes, Northerns, Muskies (Specifically Tiger Muskies)
+ Camp fire + Skillet = 👨🍳💋(replace 10% of liquid in batter with vodka, will produce a tempora style crust)
where I live all stores I know of have Bettas in tanks like this or in community tanks. They also ask you about your tank before they sell you the fish. It's just sad that in other countries stores dont feel responsible for the animals.
I do eat fish. Cod and salmon are probably my favorite. I also enjoy sushi. Salmon is my favorite type of sushi right next to eel. I haven't tried a lot of types of fish because I don't go fishing and I don't have anyone who knows how to prepare them. Like I've never had sunfish AKA bluegill, I haven't had Pike, walleye, bass, or garr. So pretty much the most out there fish I have had is catfish.... And that's because it was school lunch (breaded catfish sticks to be clear).
QOTW: I'm a huge sushi fan, esp salmon, tuna and octopus 🤩 (and wakame but that's not a fish 🤣) My fave cooked fish is "European Whitefish" filled with coarse salt, wrapped in foil and cooked on the embers 🥰
Love your Vids what type of fertiliser do you use?
0:24 damn thats one good seller. i wanna be those lucky bettas. Every betta deserve this kind of home tho.
7:15 that is insanely high nitrate, it must be a completely plant free tank with excessive stocking and no water changes. I don’t understand why the nitrite is so high though, maybe the nitrate concentration being so high put it in equilibrium? Bacteria can’t convert any more? They’re handling the ammonia well so the bio load can’t be too bad.
Amazing. Bettas is my go to fish. I have a very healthy female Betty Jane
1:47 Normal betta in cups, 9 "lucky" betta in scapes. I wasn't expecting to see the perfect example of income inequality while watching a fish tank video 😂
