Yeah if they even want to try to do the same to her or other Indonesian vtuber fanbase, Indonesians will do some magic, they will bring a lot if not million people they will bring hundred thousand people to spam the bullies social media accounts until they get banned.
Statistically Indonesian active internet users reach about 77% of the population, the number is insane and it is over 210 million people, and they don't take it easy if someone from overseas touches their people, culture, entertainment, idol, etc.
So with their infamous for being 'generous' to return the 'favor', others that know this often avoid enraging the mass of people for their own safety.
So i hope overseas people should watch their actions if they're dealing with Indonesian.

A large gamble that paid off hundreds of times over.
For real, though, Niji opened a branch in an untapped local market that should've been statistically makes sense (India), but they failed to make any sort of profit out of it. They really picked the right person to tap into the domestic Indonesian market. Knowledge upon the local (especially Javanese and Sumatran) meme culture is king, and Kobo delivers perfectly.

@@einzweichschein No, Kobo is HoloID. What I mean was that Nijisanji tried to shoot for a local market that should've made sense statistically, but failed.
Hololive did an equally big gamble with HoloID (To be fair, there was Niji-ID, but that's not the topic here), but while the members before Kobo managed to gain moderate success, Kobo was the one that truly tapped into that "domestic VTuber market". She's just like that one extroverted and semi-childish student any high schooler in Indonesia would have as a classmate, and her lovable personality just activates that parental instinct to tease and protect from within the many furiously proud and patriotic Indonesian internet users.
While the girl behind Kobo was never a streamer or a serious periodical content creator beforehand, she turned out to have a natural talent in VTubing, and thus the HoloID gamble truly bore fruit. Kobo shows that there's truly a worthwhile market to put more focus on ID-centric VTubing productions, instead of mainly tailoring content to EN and JP viewers.

Kobo also experienced some negative impact from getting famous too quickly. About one week or two after debuting she had to take a few days off to calm things down because her chat was absolutely in state of chaos. Things were getting out of hand when kobo's fans separate into two sides, Kobokers (the side who wants to support kobo) and Cebokers (the side who wants to bully kobo). They even invaded Risu's chat and other ID talents too.
However Kobo has amazing senpais that are used to things like this, leading to a few altercations where Risu, Ollie and Moona legit insulting the haters to oblivion, and given a few more weeks Kobo is already know how to deal with the "casual" indonesian viewers, and things went smoothly after that.

The one who tried to actually bully her are antis and self-proclaimed fans of older gens, who intended to cause fringes in the vtubing community.
Things get murkier when the new + immature fans kept spamming other talents chats. And her being the first vtuber experiece to Indo normies, some of them dont bother reading their channel's rules, painting her and her chill fans in a bad light

Great video and great point. As an Indonesian, I agree 100%, Kobo is THE MOST Indonesian VTuber that exist outside of the actual Indonesian-exclusive VTubers. And as a Hololive + Indonesian fan, I couldn't be happier when Kobo arrived. She was her own self, didn't try to cater to anyone, didn't try to force herself to follow this or that culture in order to get views, she went in and did everything that she wanted with what she had, what she knew, and what she loved. It's amazing to finally see a globally popular Indonesian VTuber that is actually Indonesian and doesn't speak English 99% of the time while ignoring the local/domestic viewers.

  • @Destinum
    @Destinum ปีที่แล้ว +46

I wouldn't say Kobo "barely speaks English". Sure, she's far from fluent, but in collabs she usually has no issues keeping up in English conversations, and she can still crack plenty of jokes. She could absolutely stream mainly in English if she wanted to, she just chooses not to 'cause she's much more comfortable in her native tongue.

    • @LaughingOrange

One of the main reason kobo managed to penetrate mainstream Indonesia because of her upbringing, many people in Indonesia who pursue a Vtuber career tends to come from Indonesian upper-middle or upper class (these people also tends to come from a specific ethnic group), this makes them feel less 'local' as they are not accustomed to what the rest of Indonesia enjoys, though to be honest a lot of Indonesia's jokes nowadays are related to political and religious stuff, things that vtuber actively avoids, so it is understandable.
Kobo actively participate in Indonesian jokes, follow Indonesian Gen Z humor through tiktok, using Indonesia's own ethnic group endearing stereotypes as her jokes, all this makes her feel like an actual Indonesian you could relate to.

2:14 aside from the currency not being available, the conversion is just... terrible overall. A single US Dollar equals to Rp 14000.00-16000.00... which is already quite big for common young folks. To put it in perspective, buying a decent lunch outside could range from Rp 16000.00 to Rp 36000.00, with Fast Food being twice or even thrice as expensive. Buying a drink in minimarket can go as low as Rp. 2000.00 for mineral water, to Rp. 8000.00 for instant coffee. A small change would be around Rp. 500.00 to Rp 2000.00.

Japan also romanticizes tf out of France (as do a lot of anglophone countries, tbh), so they'd do well there, too. A French vTuber with a cute accent that can tap into the French weeb scene would pull huge numbers.

I was looking at Otaku Dictionary and noted something interesting Vesper Noir did almost as much in the way of superchats as Astel did last year but he only debuted in Aug 2022 but Astel debuted well before that.
Unfortuneately, Otaku Dictionary didn't do a popularity metric for Holostars - his formula is (views + (likes * 10) - nor did he look at fastest subcount growth (this really isn't a valid metric as youTube pushes files to people most likely to watch them.
Axel, Altare and Magni also hit it pretty hard given they only were operating for 4 months
The other interesting story out there is Pekora, she literally was 2nd to Amoranth in terms of views last year the war criminal rabbit is routinely the most watch VTuber in the world and in the top 5 of female streamer on TH-cam and Twitch

I learned that most of her popularity comes from indonesia due to her almost exclusively speaking indonesian, but I didn't know that even many people outside of Indonesia like her (and for her personality no less), which I personally can't relate to at all, but I don't like Kusogakis in general. Though to be fair, she's a different kind of Kusogaki than for example Gura and Shion, who are both kind of an adorable type of Kusogaki, while Kobo is the annoying Kusogaki (which is basically the definition of Kusogaki lol). I've seen Indonesian people describing her as "the little brat that is like the annoying neighbor's kid that you'd like to kick in the ass" and things like that, which I can totally understand xD
