  • What is meant by back emf in dc motor?
    What is Back EMF?
    When the armature of a DC motor rotates under the influence of the driving torque, the armature conductors move through the magnetic field and hence emf is induced in them as in a generator.
    The induced emf acts in opposite direction to the applied voltage V (Lenz’s law) and is known as Back EMF or Counter EMF (Eb).
    The equation to find out back emf in a DC motor is given below,
    The back emf Eb(= PΦZN/60 A) is always less than the applied voltage V, although this difference is small when the motor is running under normal conditions.

    Hello,
    Your videos are awesome in the Tamil language. Technically very clear.
    How can We relate back EMF and Induction noise! Whenever We switch ON 3 Phase AC motor via some digital Boards, the totally digital section is getting disturbed! How can arrest the noises due to Induction!
    The LCD is the victim most of the time, randomly MCU will reset. If you have a solution for these it will be so helpful for industrial professionals like us! Many people are suffering due to this issue!

      நல்ல கேள்வி. The armature conductors cut the main flux due to rotation and as a result back emf is produced. Whereas in the field winding the conductors are static and conductors do not cut the flux. Therefore back emf is not produced in field winding.

      Back emf regulates the torque or speed of the motor as it opposes the supply voltage (cause producing it). When the rate of change of cutting flux is low the back emf produced will be less. In this condition more current will flow through the conductor and more torque will be produced. If the rate of change of cutting flux in the conductor is high the back emf produced will be high. In this condition motor withdraws less current from the source. Less current means torque developed in the motor is less.
