      Thank you both for sharing this. We've learned a lot from the content you've both shared. Still working on applying it all. Love the wave/beach analogy. A realisation we've arrived at recently, focusing on quality not quantity - aiming for a bigger wave each time... Working one step at a time towards that tsunami!

    One thing I don't think you get enough comments about is how good your interview style is.
    I feel like there were so many points in this discussion where other interviewers would have interrupted, rightfully so in some places to ask Hillier to emphasise a point, but you let him run with it and then ask intelligent follow up questions.
    Loved this entire thing, great job.

Of course, things are a lot easier now and I'm super grateful that I didn't give up and stayed patient all the way through. Consistency and hard work (I had to use Famester along the way, but it made it much more enjoyable and easier so I don't regret it) is the key and it always pay off. Good luck to everybody, you will make it soon.

  • @nrgao
    @nrgao ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Man this is what I needed to see today!!! I’m 34 and since I was 13, I’ve been a creator; music, film, animation. Etc but my first love is music. I got into it because of my passion for writing. After being told I had a talent for writing music by teachers and family and friends that I respected, I dove in head first by 14 yrs old. I had a full recording studio by the end of the year and what I realized almost immediately was that while writing and recording were amazing, I found myself really coming to life and finding my true artistic self in the editing and mixing.

  • @PaulVoorberg

    The best bit I got from this video, noted down:
    At the end you as the watcher should have changed. Whether it's emotional, a thought process or a new idea.
    If you've watched the video and got a completely new perspective or a new emotion you've done a good job
    If your audience has the same emotion at the start of the video and at the end, you have a problem
    Your content hasn't done enough for them, there's no change, no new memory
    The creative process is asking yourself how can I take them on that journey...
    What emotion are they going to start with and what emotion do I want them to feel at the end
    Here's what they know now and what will they know at the end

  • @themilesinkorea
    @themilesinkorea 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Many excellent tips here! I’m a relative beginner at editing video but an idea ->
    Maybe one way to deal with the video duration issue is to release two versions: A longer version ~ as people are asking for this interview, even ~ and a short version (with likely YT/Tik Tok/other shorts also)? Naturally, they can go in different playlists and be marketed as different versions. End screens could refer to the other version, also (e.g., the short version to share with a friend).
    The long version could even be released earlier to test it somewhat and give time for the content to sink in for the creator, then the short version is released. If this might lose too many people, then try to do the best we can on a short first?
    If a version doesn’t work well on a channel, then maybe have a different channel, like Casey’s Shorts, or put a longer BTS on IGTV, for example, which I heard was good for posting such.
    Hope that’s useful! Not sure if it’ll work well but I hope to try it sometime.

    Editing as an art form and self-expression is so true! It's such a valuable thing to know and it's been such a fun thing to learn. For me at least there's almost a different mentality in editing vs writing a script - this is your first thought, then this is how you revisit it, and all the while it's a way to let your personality speak.

    So I have a real question and I hope you'll consider answering. I love both of your channels, I've binged both. I've also used nearly every piece of advice as I progress in my videos. My latest video I used Film Booth recommendations and I feel proud of it. However, my watch time was lower than usual. I still believe the video techniques are solid. My question is... do these principles apply to all genres? Okay so I noticed that for my area that the most successful "mom/parenting channels" have longer videos that are more laid back. I notice that men seem to be the primary audience for the "editing" channels. However as a woman and a mom I absolutely LOVE your content! I want to apply it to my own growth on TH-cam I just don't know if it is what my audience will respond to. But you've always said, "know your audience." You're both amazing, thank you for all you've given us TH-camrs.

      I just had a look at your channel because you made me curious. I've saved your most recently uploaded 3 videos because they genuinely roped me in even though I don't have any kids! Your titles and thumbnails for your last 3 are in my opinion on point. Please keep going! I see you haven't uploaded in a year- if it's because you've been discouraged, please let this be encouragement to start up again. You've got this!

    One of my two favorite channels / people in the same video. Just brilliant video. One question that keeps me busy is that most suggestions or insights are about entertaining videos. Blowing up is rarely a tutorial video. I just started my channel. I do tutorial videos so far and I'm struggling both to keep the "entertaining" and keep audience retention. Got any advice?

    That five minute thing is very accurate, I've found with my own videos that it's almost impossible to have over five minutes, and 50% engagement. pick one. I'm also doing something similar, a recap of a day on the water, compressed into a short video.

    So much to learn from editing skills of Hillier Smith. although i have a channel that I started because of the pandemic it just didn't do much because it's only for hobby. However watching this information is a great way to make serious if you want to be successful in youtube. Although I could honestly say there's a lot of competitions with all the hundred of thousands youtubers..Good luck to everyone pursuing their career in youtube content.

    Great video and explanation. It's funny, because I've been telling friends to try and keep their videos a little shorter to help keep interest/retention higher and here you are re-iterating this for me. People have relatively short attention spans (Tik Tok, Shorts, Reels etc highlight this) and stretching something out is counter-productive. Thanks for sharing your insights!

    I was not ready to watch this video when I started twitch streaming in February. I was ready now and the value I got out of this is really eye opening. I need to be more focused on giving good quality content than the actual views or likes a video will get. Over time those will come when I am able to deliver the quality.

    The video time tip is actually really helpful to me personally. In the few videos I've made, I finished filming and the whole thing is 12 to 16 minutes long, I cut out all the mistakes, and I'm left with something that's 2 to 4 minutes long. I was stressing out about it, but what he said made me feel better.

      Hi, sorry to intrude, but I think it's good to hear another point of view. Do not rush to believe the more popular clips on the Internet because not everything they tell you is true! The most important thing is not how many people will watch your video, but what content it has, what meaning it brings! If you cut out everything and only the important, in your opinion at first glance, things remain, then the meaning of what you say loses its depth and looks unnatural to the viewer.There's a reason you get distracted or can't concentrate at certain times, and it's good for you to pay attention to these things, learn them, change some, and not cut them out! Because by cutting the videos you make, you will learn to live like this and pay attention only to the important glamorous moments in your life according to your views, and you will consider the rest as insignificant.There is depth in this life that you live, there are deep principles and laws that are good to learn, to acquire, so that one day you can pass them on to those who come after you! Everything you do matters, so how you do it matters.Good luck with whatever you're up to GHOST

    I've heard Hillier say before to cut everything that isn't helping grown the story, "Murder your darlings" as he said with AirRack, but I think this has created a problem for me... I've been so scared to leave anything in the video that didn't progress the story, that I think my audience hasn't had the chance to get to know us.. SO, I'm putting it to the test! The video I'm editing right now has a lot more "random" content, I didn't use a jump cut to remove every "um" and I'm letting the audience get to know the characters of the channel. I've watched countless videos in my niche that leads me to believe I need to keep more in. Let's see what happens!

      Good luck! Check out Holmes and Holmes retooled they seemed to do a good job of just giving the audience enough to be invested in the characters without going deep or making it the centerpiece.

    "Absorb what is useful, reject what is useless, add what is essentially your own.” - Bruce lee
    I used this mindset in the edit process of my latest video and while it was kinda weird to discard precious moments of my hard work, it was reliefing to see the end result with a way more slim and concise result. My filming and editing skills are very low but learning from experts always give us big jumps in quality, ty vm for this free tips.
