-Despite this, it's a film that is rather unavoidable... although I won't watch it, it's presence is changing things out there and people are rather obsessed by it.

(I get the feeling you are saying "Tell kids not to watch this"). Instead adults should make youngsters understand how this lifestyle is not so... normal. For me, I say let kids watch it (by kids, I mean from the ages of 16 - 18. Because by that age, they know what is a Fetish that is abusive, and what is not. You ain't going to see a 12 year old go into theature to watch this).

I watched the trailer.. wasnt impressed so i decided to read the books... first time i was disturbed.. then I read it a second time with an open mind!! I do not tolerate this sort of thing but have come to the conclusion that it is just a love story!! There is a much deeper meaning to this storyline than just the BDSM crap!! I like that this series brings out for discussion, a women's sexuality. Do they have fantasies; desires like men do, of course. Our social culture considers males the dominate figure when it comes to sex and in doing so dismisses the female point of view. We haven’t seen this kind of inquiry since Freud. Not that I agree with Freudian belief, but he unlike so many in his era addressed female sexuality - he got it wrong, but at least he attempted to understand a women’s needs. Females have desires just like men, but they need substance, a back story to go on. There needs to be connection along with the lust factor. The appeal of this movie makes perfect sense. Males are, for the most part purely visual - so a quick porn scene will do the trick. Women, we're far more complex, therefor sexual desires need to fill more than one need.
And men if you feel inferior or slightly jealous, it’s OK and completely normal. This is how many women feel about the male attraction to porn.

While I do agree that women have fantasies and that female sexuality wholeheartedly deserves to be discussed in media, I'm very much against using rape to portray it. Not only is rape about giving the rapist power over the victim (which makes the fantasy about a man forcibly taking power over a woman), but many rapists in real life frequently try to justify their actions by claiming that the victim was just so beautiful/tempting that they couldn't control themselves. That's not flattering. That's horrifying.
There are fictional works that show women willingly partaking in fantasies like that and show what goes into it. This series doesn't show that. Not only does Ana never actually enter a BDSM contract with Grey (she signs the non-disclosure agreement but not the contract) and thus never actually commit to his terms, she shows quite a lot of shame in regards to her sexuality in general (really, what woman in this day and age, especially a sexually liberated one, unironically uses the term "kept woman" to describe herself?).
On the other hand, you are right about the series in the sense that these discussions HAVE cropped up around it. They just don't happen in the series itself.
Anyway, my own two cents on the matter.

Your replay is spot on Iris. The film itsself does not depict rape or even a well developed sexuality in this women, what it does, is off scene, it gets discussions flowing about women in general. It opens the floor to 'yes, we women have our own sexuality that is independent of what males want, we have particular likes and dislikes just like men and even wild fantasies'. I like that this topic has generated conversation about women in general, through small steps like these we can began to develop a cultural norm where women are treated as equally as men.

I find it funny because the audience I expected to go see the movie wasn't actually the group that showed up. It was mostly all females in the theater, maybe 10 males total, including my boyfriend. And the majority of the girls were in their 20s. Still young, not too old. There were couples in their 30s and 40s. Acceptable. I'd just like to say it's the kind of movie for certain people. If you don't like watching sex, then I wouldn't recommend it. If you don't have an open mind, I wouldn't recommend it. If you don't like or accept different sexual lifestyles (mostly BDSM), I wouldn't recommend it. I'm a very very open person and I thought it was one of the greatest movies I've seen. I'm excited for the sequels. ☺️

I'm so tired of people pretending they're too smart/Christian/well-read, or know too much about either BDSM, or what constitutes "mommy porn" to give the book or the movie a chance to be exactly what it is...a guilty pleasure. I've watched soap operas for most of my life, and I don't take them a bit seriously, I can go through romance novels just as quickly as I can read the classics, and I can still claim an IQ of well above 145.
The books weren't porn, if you want to read that, go pick up Wifey by Judy Blume, or something by Erica Jong. Those were around in the 70's and far more explicit, and no one blinked an eye. The movie will not be porn because the books weren't.
There was nothing even close to rape in the books, so I don't know where that's coming from. The books aren't about her signing a contract and becoming a submissive to him...they are about her NOT doing it...and changing HIM. Therefore, this is a love story, not a BDSM story.
So, while all of you who think you are too intelligent to go watch this are enjoying the next Superman, Spiderman, Ironman, or whatever mindless movie full of explosions is playing at the theater next door, I will be enjoying MY guilty pleasure, too. I saw the movie it wasn't as bad as I thought or what the critics have said it was a high "C" for me not the best movie I've seen but by far not the worst. They definitely picked the right people for parts. The Soundtrack is "A+" I am definitely getting the soundtrack right away. I will be buying the movie when it is coming out in June, I hope the make the squeal and I hope the combine the two other books into one movie I think that is a better way to go.

I keep seeing trailers for the new 50 Shades of Grey. And 2 things stand out about this movie. 1: mainly women are excited by it. 2: The entire movie looks like an overly developed front for an "Adult Film". Turns out women not only watch "Adult Films" they read books about them, study them, and start fan clubs about them. It almost makes me want to stand outside of a movie theatre and hold a sign that reads "So guys are pigs, but girls are just fans?..." I'm sure many people would have opinions about that sign, and honestly I would do it just for laughs.
