  • Hello everyone! This is the first video in my new series on the Caucasus, which will see me travel in Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia.
    In this episode, I explore the legendary capital of Azerbaijan - Baku. Baku is situated next to the Caspian Sea, the largest inland body of water in the world. In fact, Baku is 28 meters below sea level.
    The vlog starts with me giving some background as to the name 'Baku', explaining some of the various interpretations and nicknames. I then point out some of the buildings along the Baku Promenade, including the Deniz Mall and the iconic Flame Towers.
    After gazing upon the Flame Towers, I talk about the Azerbaijan flag in the square, before providing some more first impressions of the city. I then go to the area outside the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum, admiring the design and talking more about the history of the country and, in particular, the importance of the year 1918.
    For our next stop after walking along the Baku Promenade and visiting several sites of interest, including the beautiful gardens, I head to the city center where I have a coffee at a place based on a famous TV series - I won't spoil the surprise just yet!
    I then visit the Old City or Icherisheher, where I talk more about the history. We also visit the areas around the Maiden Tower and Shirvanshah Palace, after which we enter the (free) Baku Museum of Miniature Books.
    The city center is the next stop, where I make comments on how it feels to walk there and compare it to other places I have been.
    Finally, I head to the metro station 28 May, but along the way we also pass Leo Tolstoy street and an area that has a more local feel than the cosmopolitan center. I also stumble across the Winter Park and the Heydar Aliyev Gardens.
    Hope you enjoy! Please remember to hit the subscribe and like buttons if you haven't already, and please leave a comment for me in the comment section - I love your engagement!

      Thank you for your kind words Swanoaks, as always! Delighted to show you and others the world off the beaten track. It is quite apparent that the locals take good care of their city as evident by the cleanliness and beautiful art. I really enjoyed my visit and the hospitality of the people was central to that. Very cool seeing Second Cup as far away as Azerbaijan! Nice to see Canadian coffee chains spreading across the world (recently discovered that the Philippines is home to quite a few Tim Hortons, another Canadian coffee chain, was a little taste of home while I was there). Baku looks like a very clean city, or at least the areas you visited. And I too am a big fan of their flag. :) Great video as usual, my friend.

      Cheers Landshark! Always a pleasure having you travel along with my vlogs. I did not know that Second Cup is Canadian, so thanks for that bit of information! I did enjoy a few Tim Hortons when I visited Canada in 2018, so definitely familiar with them :) Hope all is well on your side

    Your videos are always so informative! Baku is on my list of places to visit, so it's great to get your insight. I do have to admit to being a bit confused by how a coastal city could be 28m below sea level, but Google sorted that out for me, so it's all good. 😁

As always, you do such a nice job in showing us all around! Thank you. So ... you're not that far from Ashgabat ... truly a unique city, eh? Any chance you're going there, too? Wherever it is, know you'll share some great times with us "stay at homes"! [Greetings from Tucson, again]

      Hi Jim! Always lovely to hear from you and thank you for your kind words. Glad you could tag along for our Baku visit and learn something about this incredible place! I won't be visiting Ashgabat on this trip but it is definitely on my list, as per my recent poll :) There are ferries from Azerbaijan to Turkmenistan so that is one way to get there. Hope all is well in Tucson!

    By the way, about Baku, Gary Kasparov was born into a Armenian-Jewish family, this is since decades ago baku was a multicultural city, inhabited by Shirvani Turks (North Azerbaijanis), Tat Iranians, Armenians, Russians and Turkic tribes. But Kasparov and his family were forced to flee Baku, due to the Baku pogrom which targeted the Armenians of the city. Till this day, most buildings are build by Iranians (Shirvanshah palace, Maiden Tower, Mosques and medieval buildings of the old city), Armenians (Azerbaijan State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater or Mailov Theatre in Armenian, Sadikhov Residence, Sabunchi Railway station, Tigran Melikovs house and many more), Polish (National Museum of History of Azerbaijan, Palace of Happiness, Ismailiyya Palace, Institude of Manuscripts, Tigran Melikovs House and many more), Russians and Germans (Palace of De Boure, Residence on Krasnovodskaya, Church of the Saviour and many more) and North Azerbaijanis, who built most modern buildings, like the flame towers.

    • @willieexplore
      @willieexplore  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Beichen, thank you very much for watching my videos! It is much appreciated. Well, my recommendations would very much depend on your interests. For example, do you like nature or architecture? Or both? Do you like visiting museums, or are you happy to skip them? I would definitely recommend exploring Baku for a couple of days and just stroll around the promenade hugging the Caspian Sea, whilst taking in the magnificent architecture. I would also highly recommend doing a day trip from Baku and see the mud volcanoes and burning mountain. Whatever you decide to do, just make sure you relax take it easy and don't rush things! It certainly is a wonderful place to visit and I'm sure you'll have a great time :) Hope that helps, let me know if you need more tips / hints!
