To clarify something I wasn’t clear about in the video: place the EQ at the end of your plugin chain, after the distortion and saturation. Then, adjust the signal level as needed to blend the high 808 with the low version.
Wouldn’t it be better to also cut at 5k before the saturation (so your saturator doesn’t have to create harmonics for any upper frequencies most likely to cause aliasing)? & then add another 5k cut afterward…
It really depends on your bass. In theory, you’re correct, but in practice, I’ve found that adding an EQ at the start of your chain to remove loads of frequencies can dramatically change how the distortion sounds. Test it out and see what you think! As for aliasing, enabling oversampling on Saturn is the best way to minimize it. While a linear phase low-pass filter at the end of the chain can help clean up high-frequency noise, it won’t remove aliasing artifacts that were already introduced during the distortion process.
Bro, I use this kind of teqnnique for many years now without waching those tutorials. I just send my 808 to 2 channels instead of exporting it after high cut. You just have think about what you are doing. If you know your tools, you can easily come up with new mixing ideas.
Yeah, there are many ways to achieve the same effect. I used to use MaxxBass, which does something similar. It’s worth noting though, that I’m not claiming JJ created this technique-it’s just one that he uses in his mixes.

I appreciate the concise tips.
Very useful for an intermediate producer
Beautifly explained. Can u make vocal chains of particular artirts? Like clairo zedd etc. Thanks!
Thank you! I certainly can. I love the diversity of the two artists you mentioned as well!
Thanks!
You’re welcome!
