Watching this even 11 years later is chilling. Kudos to TV-22 for capturing this and informing the public in real time. I was visiting my parents in Brattleboro VT when this live feed was picked up by the station they were watching there.

Note that it took 40 seconds of the live camera being on screen for both of them to realize a tornado was on the ground and in progress, when it was pretty obvious for the whole time if you looked closely.

New England isn't known for being well versed in tornados, let alone how to identify tornadic activity. I'm commenting just after having an EF-1 tornado in my neck of the woods of NH a couple days ago as of typing this. Having watching one too many tornado videos, I took the warnings seriously and took cover in the basement when it hit. Thankfully, not hitting my residence, but pretty close. My family were dumb as doornails and said they'd go down stairs if they saw it. Which, you can't really see a tornado approach to begin with, because we're surrounded by the white mountains, tall pine trees and enclosed by forrest and, even if the trees & mountains weren't present, it could be rain wrapped and mistaken as passing rain. Even if the tornado I experienced in NH recently was practically nothing, say, compared to this video of the 2011 Springfield, MA tornado, you can't predict mother nature. Because we don't get these things, most people don't have a frame of reference to carry a sense of danger or a cause for caution for these things.

Got to be a meteorologist dream right there for the tornado to form literally right in front of there live cam. Could not have been more perfect, formed right in front and then went right by their Springfield cam without taking it out. Nick and Brian must of been having a field day looking at that shot. You can hear it too in their voice. That almost never happens for these guys sitting in the studio. They just couldn’t believe it. 😂

Talking about hail storms with uncle at time that day. About 1-2 hrs later we got hit with Tornado. Was living in Merrick Section of town in West Springfield. Our house was relatively spared outside ripped sidings from house or broken windows. Neighbor down end of street house collapsed. Down on other end of street off Main Street by old Immaculate Conception church a motorist was killed by a tree landing on his suv. On street next to ours a woman saved her kid in a tub. She perished. Terrible day to be sure. Was totally in shock we hardly ever get tornadoes especially that size too. Hearing Brian Lappis and Nick Bannin that day. Its going to be 10 years June 1. Time flies. Nick now in Austin Texas. Wishing him the best. Brian Lappis a lifer. Will never leave 22.

I believe the first game of the Stanley Cup Finals, despite the presence of the Boston Bruins, was not televised in Springfield (WWLP pre-empting it due to coverage of the storm's aftermath), while in Boston, the game aired on CW affiliate WLVI instead of then-NBC affiliate WHDH for the same reason (WLVI and WHDH are under the same ownership).

@DarkKnightress0709 due to the entire population probably not watching the live feed (some were watching Accuweather, listening to the radio, police scanners, or CT area affiliates), so in case you came sprinting home, it was for those. This is standard emergency broadcasting, and required by FCC regs to make sure they are as accurate as possible.

This is the 1 year anniversary of the EF3 tornado hitting the greater Springfield area. It killed 3 people and was on the ground for 40 miles - from Westfield to Sturbridge, MA. I live in Wilbraham. We took a direct hit - rooves off, homes destroyed, trees down everywhere. Tornadoes do happen in New England. Wilbraham was hit by this on June 1 2011 and then again by a microburt (equivalent to an EF2) on July 26 2011 and sustained even more damage. Very glad to see 2011 go!

I lived in Whitinsville at the time and remember that day vividly, it was like all hell was breaking lose across the state and I was worried it was going to be like the June 9th 1953 tornado outbreak all over again, that hit Worcester with a monster F4 tornado that killed almost 100 people.
They issued a tornado warning mentioning my street (Purgatory Rd) BY NAME, though fortunately that one didn't didn't happen. I didn't get home until just before it passed, the messages on my answering machine were hilarious as family and friends were all frantically telling me to get in the basement and were assuming I wasn't answering the phone because I was out trying to videotape it, they were PISSED! :D

This was an EF3 tornado that killed 4, injured over 200, was 1/2 mile wide and on the ground for 39 miles. Wilbraham (my home), Monson and Brimfield were next and heavily damaged - homes & thousands of trees destroyed.
Wilbraham hit AGAIN last week, July 26, by yet another storm equiv to an EF2 (90-110 mph winds)! More homes damaged. FEMA trailers for victims from the June storm were damaged by falling trees. Amazing weather! Getting a little gun shy now when we hear thunder!

Can you provide a link? I have never seen that report of someone calling it in on a CB. Let me clarify my statement, I was one of the first to call Westfield PD. And yes it did start in the area of Shaker Rd In westfield.
Here are the GPS Coordinates 42.10N / 72.75W

Yep he admitted it at 15:10 that the tornado did in fact move East not West as said at 7:23 it moved East across the CT River into downtown Springfield... thought I was losing it and was delirious with all the mistakes on all 3 Ch 3, Ch 22 & Ch 40 in Springfield during the tornado outbreak...my prayers go out to all who were affected by the tornado...and Springfield media definitely needs prayers as well for inaccurate reporting during the tornado... see my other comments on Ch 3 and 40 reports!

Youre statement is highly exaggerated. The debris rising from the base of the tornado was barely visible at :33 on the camera. Also, you stated that it took them more than a minute after :33 seconds to recognize the tornado. One of the reporters called out at 1:10 that he saw the tornado on the ground. Even if the tornado was visible at :33 on the ground, it was certainly not more than a minute. It was only 43 seconds or so, those in the immediate path didnt have 43 seconds to react.

All they talk about is downtown as this tornado began to form..meanwhile it continued on and Wilbraham, Monson and Brimfield got WIPED OUT 10X worse than Springfield did as this thing grew into a monster.

There were tornado watches up - the DAY BEFORE (accuweather, weather channel, TV22). Many early warnings! After viewing videos online, TV22 had the best and earliest warnings June 1. Other stations were pathetic - looking right at the tornado in the river and STILL not calling it a tornado and take cover!
So wierd to see this LIVE on TV - coming right at us in Wilbraham! We were hit hard. Town still in recovery mode. So much damage. Monson was destroyed! Moving to Joplin - safer!

@tman383 dude, people died because of that tornado. I saw the damn thing 2 miles north of my house in East Longmeadow. We lost power for 2+ days after the thing struck. Plus, what you don't know is that this was also Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals, and this happens. I knew something was wrong when the National Weather Service issued the tornado watch @ 1 that afternoon. Idc what you say, be mindful this is real life instead of fantasy. Crying? HA! I laugh hysterically at that comment
