The genius of the scriptwriter includes synchronizing Matthew's question "you want me to follow you?" with Peter's question "do you even know what he's done?". Then Jesus answers YES just once, which fits beautifully as His answer to both of them simultaneously!
Given the portrayal of Matthew and his nervous inability to look at people when in conversation, the way he looks directly and determinedly at the eyes of Gaius without breaking glance, really shows his absolute conviction. Amazing scene
Me too! It's so well acted. His only hesitation is in that he can't believe his ears at first (which it's likely a man in his position wouldn't), and after that there is absolutely none. Just drop everything and go.
I noticed in that last scene the different reaction of Mary from the other disciples. She who had lapsed in her Jewish faith and had been delivered of much was excited and happy for Matthew that Jesus was calling him. Contrast that with the others who had been always practicing their Judaism who were unhappy and a little angry that Jesus would call Matthew. They thought they were better than him. It reminds me of that scripture which says he who has been forgiven much, loves much.
I don't think it has something to do with Judaism.... It's something to do with what Matthew had done, which was betraying his own people by working with their enemies, which were the romans by putting burden to them with the taxation, people were dying with oppression and taxation....
One of my favorite scenes --- those hugs of Jesus just jumps off the screen!!!!! You so feel those powerful scenes !! They speak to the heart and soul of man!!! It makes you want to weep!!!
Years ago, I was deep into various ministries in my church. We were an evangelistic, charismatic, outreach ministry. Among other things, I was part of the 'clown ministry'. So, I had to choose a name for my clown. I chose Modgnik. Because everyone seemed to get the KINGDOM of God backward. His Kingdom is here and now among His believers! Our church was NEW COVENANT LIVING OUTREACH CENTER.
Johnathan Roumi is my favorite but Matthew played by Paris is my second favorite. He is so child like and readily accepts his role In following Jesus. Paris deserves an award for playing Matthew.
True story of The Chosen. The scene where Nicodemus kisses Jesus' hand was so beautiful I had to look up the scripture that Nicodemus was quoting...When I found it I realized that Jesus' response was the 2nd half of the same verse! I read it over and over and just saw a legalistic response from Nicodemus and a grace response from Jesus' kingdom all in Psalm 2:12 as the writers portrayed this interaction.
Bruh. It wasn't a legalistic response. You said it yourself. They were quoting the same Psalm. Both is true of Jesus. He is both a mighty King and a gracious Savior.
After Peter said ¨Depart from me... You don´t know what i have done....¨ Now he says about Matthew.. ¨Do you have any idea what this guy has done !???¨ Isn´t that like us... We forget what we have done and see what we think is probably a bigger sin in someone else and maybe think this one could should never be called to serve the Lord. I also love how the Matthew´s face is framed by the cage... Also after Peter asks the question ¨Do you have any idea what this guy has done ?¨ Matthew had also asked a question: ¨You want ME to follow You ? ¨ And so Jesus answering both questions at the same time... ¨YES ! )
😂I love toward the end when we know Jesus is stopping to "get" Matthew. Mary's knowing smile, but both of you receive one to the other....felt...yes! Love is calling.❣❣❣❣He is calling everyone, you point out. Oh, if I could only tell you a story. One who turned away from God and the Church at 14. And He called me back at 77! My whole life brought me to this point and I am so happy that Dallas Jenkins was called to create this beautiful series that is taking the world in its arms.
Wow, I feel like I've just been to church!! Thanks to the Grafted team, for another awesome reaction video. This just happens to be 2 of my favorites scenes! Something I thought of while watching. When Jesus called Nicodemus, he had hesitations, not about following Jesus, but about all he would have to give up or change. Matthew on the other hand, all Jesus had to do was give him that look, and he was on his way out the door! I think it's important that we don't let 'things' or even people get such a hold on us that we can't be willing to pick up and 'follow Jesus'. It might not be to go to a foreign land and be a missionary, it could be something as simple as getting involved in a particular ministry in the church. Serve God in some way. There's something all of us can do, we just have to be willing to!
Absolutely love that you had to say Tracy particularly about Matthew ,Not one second getting have to think about it for the reaction about what you have in afterwards we’re all the parts of his personality predicted he would think for a long time much like Nicodemus.
I watch this episode so often and it tears me up; I have followed Jesus since December 2017 and am so thankful for the long-sufferingness (?) of the Lord. I can't wait until Jesus hugs me and holds my head like He does to Nicodemus...
This episode is one of my faves! I must say, Dr. Tom, you just blew my mind with the insight about the serpent lifted up and overcoming death! Other than "Get used to different" my favorite quote from The Chosen is when Nicodemus says, "My heart is swollen with fear... and wonder." Keep it up guys., I always learn so much from your videos. Thank you.
This is one of the top episodes in the series. I love how Gaius delivers his lines after Matthew leaves the cage (What are you doing? Where do you think you're going?) and the expression on his face. Rather than being angry or showing authority, he appears dumbfounded, unable to process what is happening, which makes the scene more moving and realistic to me. Shortly later at 27:22, he says "You will regret this, Matthew." There is a slight pause before he says Matthew's name, and the first time I heard that line, I thought Gaius was directing the line to Jesus as a subtle threat. Even though the statement was directed to Matthew, I thought maybe Gaius' delivery of the line was being used to foreshadow the perils to Jesus in the future with that slight pause. I may be reading more into it than was intended, but an awesome scene regardless!
never thought about the parallel of needing to behold a man being the messiah and the israelites needing to behold the serpent to be healed of their sicknesses…. Whewwwww so good!!!!!
I love when Jesus tells Matthew he may need his notebook then later on Matthew is using his notebook when him and Jesus are practicing the Sermon on the Mount, which is in the book of Matthew
Wow the revelation about the snake 🐍 😳..I was wondering about it and never understood it that way.Thank you Lord 🥰.Thank you brothers.Shalom. love watching your content 😊
Definitely one of the best episodes. I've seen it several times now, and when Nicodemus breaks down crying.. tears start flowing for me as well.. such a powerful episode
So many persecuted, disenfranchised people in our world who need to reach out and take the hand ofChrist to lift them up. We need you to deliver His message. Hear Oh Israel
I have watched this episode of Jesus and Nicodemus (John 3) over 30 times, and still cannot stop the tears !!! Love you guys commentaries !! Matthew is my favorite actor.
This is the most beautiful scene in the whole production of the Chosen. Everytime I watch this scene I get very emotional. This scene is the foundation of my salvation
Watching this each time I am reminded of the parable of the rich young ruler. Recognizing God & Jesus is the first part. Encountering God is powerful but that doesn’t mean that drop everything and follow is easy. I love how they make that clearer in the series.
Ooohhhh I just love you guys! you always seek out every scripture, then dive into them bringing out new revelation and spiritual depth from the scene.....with such natural humour. Wonderful!🔥
I believe this show is saved for a time like this for a very good reason. So many movies about Jesus but nothing like this. I have never watched anything like this. Everyone knows that for all believers, this show strengthens each and everyone of our faith. Tears roll down like streams of living water. Inside my deepest heart, I think we are being prepped for His return. Maranatha, our King.
I just also want to say, I really appreciate how you guys analyze the scenes accurately and with reference to scripture as well as the character of God. Your love for Yashua is deeply evident and truly moving. Thank you!!!
The Lord is Great. Jesus & Nicodemus meeting for the first time must have been Great. I can only imagine when each believer meets Jesus for the first time is Great. In Jesus Name.
Scenes like this help to visualize and realize we serve a PERSONAL God not one we have to scramble after to earn favor with. He meets us face to face. I think that is what is often missed in reading words, not that the Words do not have power, they do of course. It’s realizing Yeshua was God in flesh, that had we faced God face to face without Christ as the son-glasses, we surely would have died at the sight of the Most High. However, God being so personal with us, did not want that divide any longer and came to clear the books, clear the debt, renew our spirit with new life and draw us close to Him. I love how personal Yeshua is in this scene with Nicodemus, because that is the personal God we serve. We fall to our feet in awe and shame, Yeshua raises our eyes to Him and instead of condemnation, He bids us to “Rise”. What a loving King.
I am new to this channel and I’m really enjoying the banter. But I have to say that first and foremost I am a lifelong Roman Catholic. But you men are touching my heart and your insights into The Chosen episodes are entertaining but also TEACHING me in a way my teachers did not! You are my favorite reaction videos and since I am a huge Chosen watcher, I am listening to every comment and conversation yyhave in relation to the show. And your devotion to Jesus is contagious and fervent. You and the show are guiding me to the gospels and scripture. Thank you and God our Father bless you and keep you.
Beloved servants, Sam and Dr. Tom, like so many others, I really appreciate your insights; specifically concerning the parallel of lifting up the cursed serpent for healing and the Son of Man being lifted up. It immediately reminded me of the scripture "cursed is the man who hangs on a tree" (Deut 21:23) which Nicodemus would have known. And so Yeshua was, by man, cursed- which led me to Is 53:3- despised and rejected... but then... "we turned our backs on him and looked the other way". Again, Nicodemus would have known this scripture... A great portrayal of his beginning to understand "looking away" is the sin and looking upon Him, will be his salvation. Toda raba for His Word, and your sharing of insights, studying and teaching. Blessings always and Shabbat Shalom, albeit a few hours early ;)
Love you videos. Learn so much of stuff I never noticed. They always make me cry - God/ Jesus is so Good . I get so blessed by the Bible stories coming to life in my imagination. Keep up the great videos Good stuff such a blessing
How can I thank you two?! This episode absolutely left me undone and now your reaction video, the same. Sam, referencing Isaiah 6 was perfect for me. As believer for many years I still struggle with “Hineni.” As I watched this my struggle came to a head. Dr. Tom, the “the what am I signing up for” human response says it all. May His Ruach continue to lead me as I surrender to Him. Thank you and bless the Grafted team for posting this. Count on me to share your channel.
Matthew is by far my favorite. I have heard people say, Matthew was a really bad guy. But everyone forgets that he gave up everything, all of his riches, to follow Jesus, and live in poverty. He did the thing that Nicodemus could not.
Love how you guys interact with one another, keeps me smiling and gives good insight into the secens you are showing. Jesus and Nicodemus and Matthew are some of my favorite scenes . Thanks for sharing!
Its really important that we know how to rightfully divide the word of God because when Jesus was alive His teachings are more focus on the lost sheep of Israel but when Jesus died and rose again. It opens up the mystery of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ through Paul. Now as a gentile, we have salvation through Jesus Christ. Ephesians 3:8-9 8 Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ; 9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:
The moment I saw what episode you guys were watching, I knew there'd be crying. 😁 This episode, specifically the Nicodemus scene and Jesus calling Matthew are my favorites of season 1, and some of my favorites of season 1 and 2.
"Get used to different". BEST LINE EVER. But to be fair, Jesus DID warn Simon Peter when he met him - he would become a fisher of men, gathering "all kinds" - Jesus will sort us out once where in the net!😎 Matthew 4:19 just says "people" - not the good, the talented, the successful or the compatible...
I love your videos and the way you explain scripture. I'm undone! On your next video, I would love for you to take a moment to explain "messianic congregation". I hope this is not disrespectful but I understand it to be "Jews for Jesus". Am I wrong? Would you explain further?
According to Scripture Nicodemus helped Joseph of Arimathea take Jesus off of the Cross, and brought 100 lbs of spices to wrap with him. That in itself was making a huge statement to The Pharisees. As for Joseph...only a relative could claim a body from the Romans,,or the body would have been thrown into the pit with those of the criminals.
18:37 Although the kiss the Son is not biblical but it does point to Judas in contrast of kissing the Son in betrayal. So Nicodemus action of using Psalm 2:12 is a prophecy of what happened in Gethsemane - kissing the Son.
It's really pretty crazy, isn't it, to think of being a regular person who then recognizes that Jesus in the flesh was God. It was a huge claim that Jesus made and since I've been a Christian since childhood I can retroactively recognize how difficult it would have been for people then, and for people now, to really understand the truth of it. The bible helps a lot to tell the truth.
Since you brought it up, I wanted to share my theory on Gaius' "identity" Possible spoilers below: So, a big theme of the show is taking encounters we see in the bible (Matthew, Nicodemus) and showing their story before their encounter. Of the Roman guards, there are two Roman guards we know of who recognize who Yeshua was. The centurion who astounded Yeshua with his faith, whose backstory as given in the Bible does not match Gaius (paying for the Synagogue, deep understanding of Jewish customs), but now consider the centurion at the cross. "And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Yeshua, saw how he died, he said, 'Surely this man was the Son of God!'" Mark 15:39 Considering this was the man who helped nail him to the cross, and wagered for his clothes, and someone who didn't even follow the Jewish faith, this is an astounding claim, and what would lead up to it. In the Passion of the Christ he was combined with the man who's ear was cut and healed, but consider, what if it was Gaius, completing his faith journey! Why I think the writers are setting this up: 1. The next episode he says he is not a centurion, and Matthew says Gaius will do fine without him. I think this could foreshadow another promotion in his future, to a centurion. 2. Season 2 shows Yeshua has some interest in speaking more with Gaius. 3. We've had people come to know Yeshua in one scene, one episode, or multiple episodes. I think it would emphasize the show's themes to also include a series long conversion story arc. 4. And lastly, while I don't know the plans for the last season, I think it would be an awesome role reversal to have Matthew questioning how the messiah could die, even question if Yeshua was the one, only to have Gaius want to learn everything he can about the promised messiah, even though he's now dead and many people believe will it wasn't him for the next couple of days. Curious if you guys, in thinking about Gaius' journey, considered this yet. I'm also a Jewish believer, and appreciate you brining a Messianic insight to this show. Keep up the great work!
Yes, I have Giaus pegged for the Roman soldier who acknowledges at the cross that Jesus must be the son of God. There are one or two Giaus' in the New Testament, so if The Chosen is going to carry on into the book of Acts then our Giaus may still be around.
I was asking God about the bronze serpent the other day. I thought, like you did, that the snake is representative of sin and not of God and I asked Holy Spirit, how does that work? Of all the symbols He could have told Moses use, why a snake, the symbol of evil??? He reminded me that Christ, Who knew no sin, BECAME SIN for us. That serpent was pointing to the fact that Christ would become sin for us and so carry our death sentence, but because He is the Son of God and did not sin while taking on the form of a man, He could defeat both sin and death and rise from the grave. It wasn't the serpent itself that healed the Israelites, it was them looking to the perfect sacrifice that God saw symbolized in that bronze serpent. His perfect, only begotten Son, becoming sin for us and conquering death.
Really love, love, love your reactions, so on point, hugely thought-provoking and heart engaging... now I'm rewatching episode 7 again, and will be in tears again. 🥲
That’s an interesting view of why Jesus mentioned the serpent on the pole of Moses but I’ve read that it also meant that Jesus compares Himself to the serpent which relates to the cross and this serpent thing is known to be the most cursed thing on earth. Jesus is saying He is taking the curse of sin upon and into Himself for us so that we could be clean/pure/righteous when we look to Him, believe and love Him for salvation so that we would not be bitten by the serpent “satan/sin”. Scripture tells us that Jesus bore the curse/sin upon Himself on the cross when He was lifted up. Even more so, we read that Jesus was given a crown of thorns on His head for which He was being mocked about being King of the Jews. Thorns also represent sin and the curse. Especially when we read in Genesis that after Adam and Eve sinned, thorns came forth from the creation which was because of sin. The crown of thorns was a representation of Jesus bearing the curse upon Himself for us in our place! Love God so much for what He did for us! No greater love!
The genius of the scriptwriter includes synchronizing Matthew's question "you want me to follow you?" with Peter's question "do you even know what he's done?". Then Jesus answers YES just once, which fits beautifully as His answer to both of them simultaneously!
The scene with Jesus and Nicodemus is my favorite. Nicodemus is almost child like. His emotions are so pure and full of love.
It’s how everyone should be, we should all be little children with God.
Given the portrayal of Matthew and his nervous inability to look at people when in conversation, the way he looks directly and determinedly at the eyes of Gaius without breaking glance, really shows his absolute conviction.
Amazing scene
Totally! Also, the way he locks onto Jesus’ face in moments.
Matthew being called is one of my favorite scenes.
Same here!
His acting is so on point!!
me too... so so precious... drop everything, immediately, and follow.. his expressions are so touching.
Mine too
Me too! It's so well acted. His only hesitation is in that he can't believe his ears at first (which it's likely a man in his position wouldn't), and after that there is absolutely none. Just drop everything and go.
I love Mary's knowing smile as Jesus calls Matthew. And then absolute look of clarity as Matthew is confronted by Gaius. Soooo good.
Me too! Not many people notice or mention that!
Matthew son of Alpheus Mary of Magdla.
Thanks, I so enjoying sharing these with you and your comments
I noticed in that last scene the different reaction of Mary from the other disciples. She who had lapsed in her Jewish faith and had been delivered of much was excited and happy for Matthew that Jesus was calling him. Contrast that with the others who had been always practicing their Judaism who were unhappy and a little angry that Jesus would call Matthew. They thought they were better than him. It reminds me of that scripture which says he who has been forgiven much, loves much.
There's no judaism in this show. No yarmulkes and there are no rabbis employed by the temple. ie, not judaism.
I don't think it has something to do with Judaism.... It's something to do with what Matthew had done, which was betraying his own people by working with their enemies, which were the romans by putting burden to them with the taxation, people were dying with oppression and taxation....
Mary definitely looked at Matthew through her ❤. Others only had judgement.
I love how this incredible actor is portraying Mathew.
One of my favorite scenes --- those hugs of Jesus just jumps off the screen!!!!! You so feel those powerful scenes !! They speak to the heart and soul of man!!! It makes you want to weep!!!
Beautifully said.

This is my favorite episode. I love it when Nicodemus kneels and quotes Psalm 2:12 and Jesus finishes it. I cry every time!
Johnathan Roumi is my favorite but Matthew played by Paris is my second favorite. He is so child like and readily accepts his role In following Jesus. Paris deserves an award for playing Matthew.
The part of Gaius is played so well. He just crushed it. But then I think all the cast members crushed their parts.
Thanks for giving us the scripture.

This was my favorite episode. I had cried so hard. It truly touched me...Nicodemus is played by an amazing actor. It was so beautiful.
God Bless You All
Yes, absolutely no tears left in my eyes and heart for days after I watched that scene. Love, Love, Love .
Yes, Erick is an excellent actor. Hat's off to Dallas for knowing just the best actor to play Nicodemus. Love
Dear sweet Nicodemus. He's trying so hard. I'm an older person too. Seeing the face of my precious Savior, would take my breath away.
God's love is so amazing! I am so loved!
I have been waiting for them to review this episode….. it’s one of my favorites!!’
When you encounter the God of the universe everything changes!!!

Wow. The discourse about the symbols are AMAZING. Thank you both so much!!!
I have watched this episode of Jesus and Nicodemus (John 3) over 30 times, and still cannot stop the tears !!! Love you guys commentaries !! Matthew is my favorite actor.
Me too... Matthew my favorite.
So moving, the insights! How I love this God! The one and only true God….
This is the most beautiful scene in the whole production of the Chosen. Everytime I watch this scene I get very emotional. This scene is the foundation of my salvation

WOW YOUR ANALYSIS WITH THE SERPENT AND JESUS!! I have to leave a timestamp to rewatch it many times: 9:10

I have a feeling Gaius will be the Roman centurion who asks Jesus to heal his child without coming to his house.
Love you videos. Learn so much of stuff I never noticed. They always make me cry - God/ Jesus is so Good . I get so blessed by the Bible stories coming to life in my imagination. Keep up the great videos
Good stuff such a blessing
LITERALLY one of my favorite episodes! Thank you for finally reviewing it as I have been wanting to see your breakdown. God bless you both!
Thank you for your input and watching this series. I have learned so much from both of you.

Thanks for sharing!
one of the best in Season 1.... 😍
always love your perspective on these scenes.... and the raw emotion... great review brothers
Only God could have healed her then I saw her...healed and here you are...
You make my cry each time ❤❤❤
This scene with Nicodemus and Jesus makes me cry every time. It grabs at your heart and soul. Thanks guys for your comments about this...
This was great. Thank you all.
Ephesians 3:8-9
8 Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ;
9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:
This was very touching watching Nico weeping and made Jesus teared up too!
26:18 "Let my people go" "let me go"
I really really really want Gaius to be the Roman soldier who says, "Surely this man is the Son of God!"
I want him to be the centurion whose son was sick.
Me too
The Roman officer seems to be the THAT Roman Officer whose faith surprised Jesus and his faith healed his servant
I always got a kick out of that line about returning to the womb. As if his mother's death is what makes returning to the womb impossible for him 😂
The moment I saw what episode you guys were watching, I knew there'd be crying. 😁
This episode, specifically the Nicodemus scene and Jesus calling Matthew are my favorites of season 1, and some of my favorites of season 1 and 2.
My Favorite!
I love the scenes when Nicodemus realizes that Yeshua is actually the God who became man.😭😭😭😭😭
No one could take Jesus’ life from him He lays it down himself.
After seeing the scene with Matthew, I hope they do the story of Zachaeus
Jews don't go to foot races is probably because the Greek foot races were completed naked. It was considered sinful.
Please let’s go back to the time when your videos were 50 mins long. I just need more of your videos 😭😭
I love this episode!
Being born again. John 3
Poor Simon Peter, he lost the race to the tomb to John and now The Chosen keeps cracking the Simon can’t run jokes.
The saddest moment--Nico doesn't get the connection between the serpent being lifted up and the Son of Man being lifted up.
But he will. And his life will change forever.
🙏🏽❤️ the question isn’t "can God become man" but instead "can God fully dwell in a man”
Just as the snake/sin was lifted up on the cross; put YOUR sin on the cross of Calvary, and look to Yeshua...
THE FORGIVER OF SIN

🙏💕
And the Word became flesh...
Since you brought it up, I wanted to share my theory on Gaius' "identity"
Possible spoilers below:
So, a big theme of the show is taking encounters we see in the bible (Matthew, Nicodemus) and showing their story before their encounter.
"And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Yeshua, saw how he died, he said, 'Surely this man was the Son of God!'" Mark 15:39
Considering this was the man who helped nail him to the cross, and wagered for his clothes, and someone who didn't even follow the Jewish faith, this is an astounding claim, and what would lead up to it.
In the Passion of the Christ he was combined with the man who's ear was cut and healed, but consider, what if it was Gaius, completing his faith journey!
Why I think the writers are setting this up:
That's exactly what I was thinking!
Yes, I have Giaus pegged for the Roman soldier who acknowledges at the cross that Jesus must be the son of God. There are one or two Giaus' in the New Testament, so if The Chosen is going to carry on into the book of Acts then our Giaus may still be around.
If the Chosen continues in acts I could see Gaius becoming Theophilus.
I don't remember the Centurian being the person who's ear was cut off. The one who's ear was cut off had a beard. The Centurian didn't have a beard.
@@williamfinch9858 It says that he had a beard?
Hopefully this is not a spoiler. Gaius is the Roman in Matt 8. It makes sense Matthew would include that.
🪱 ✝️ 2 Corinthians 5,21
Imho, you guys skipped one of Nicodemus' best lines...call to ..."give up who I am?"
I have a question. I haven’t read the whole Bible. But I was just wondering if Nicodemus went to heaven?
Renewed covenant. Renewing the original covenant. The Rauch HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) was also in Moses, Noah, David… It’s not a “New Testament” concept.
He who knew no sin became sin…..
