Another great educational video. You’re depth of knowledge is fantastic, I didn’t know intercooler icing was a thing but I doubt an old PD 130 A4 intercooler is efficient enough to cause the problem. I do know a fair bit mechanically, certainly enough to do all my own work but I always manage to glean some good information from you, always good to learn 👍👍👍
I have to change the DMF soon, it’s rattling like mad and does make it feel a little more agricultural than it should and it’s a Quattro, done this twice before so, I’ll get there.

My 04 Passat 1.8t gas here in S. Florida blows off the hot side hose at the lower inlet of the AfterCooler. Truth, the IC is clogged, maybe was iced at one point on a recent wet night under power. Solution: a disconnect of the IC at both ends and then a kerosine wash, maybe naptha, (maybe removal), and then blow it dry....beats me why VW didn't work on this challenge, maybe a pressure bleed valve(?).
    Live and learn.
    Thank you Tech.
Everything you do makes perfect sense.

usual discussion and consensus is EGR makes the condensation. I dont think your 1.8T has EGR system.

Very informative...I didn't know about this issue but found this video after dumping water out of one of my intercooler pipes today...it's fall and car is almost always garaged, all year (mine is a 2011 SW TDI, dieselgate car).
I was changing the oil today. I have a metal belly pan and almost always look down at top of pan from above when inspecting car (wife drives it so I inspect often). Noticed lately pan had small amount of oily dirt starting to build up on pan below intercooler pipe...when I removed belly pan, no question something was there. I looked around and noticed some oily dirt around the worm clamp on passenger side intercooler pipe and around the area. I loosend the worm clamp and decided to remove pipe....I was drenched in water....I had both intercooler pipes OFF totally last year because I replaced radiator. No water then, just small amount of oily residual. I cleaned out the pipes and put back last year...so what happened in this past year to get that water in there???...no engine issues but I will check now each time I take off belly pan for during oil or tranny fluid changes or anything else....both sides...to check for water build up...I was amazed at amount of water...maybe 1/2 cup or so....

We have a VW-Audi shop in NH and we drain intercoolers every oil change on these cars (and that's 5k miles not 10K). Recently we have had a cold and warm cycle and currently there are 5 waterlogged tdi's here and 2 wouldn't start due to the intercooler being so full of water they froze the lower tube solid with ice. One of the cars had about a quart of water in the bottom tube, AND it had the $600 intercooler update installed last year (see VW TSB 2025464 ) because of the same problem. It doesn't work, don't waste the almost $1k installing it. We are going to be drilling the bottom tube with a 1/16 drill bit to allow a constant drain in hopes that works. Only time will tell. VW should be ashamed and should recall all of these and actually fix them properly. I'm at the point it's embarrassing to tell our customers how poorly built and ridiculously expensive these cars are. Very sad from the same company that used to build high quality affordable cars. now it's all about profit over product. Sad times... BTW I've been a VW tech since 1988 and have watched the quality circling the bowl the whole time.

Hello Sir. After checking the internet and also your video, i think that i have an intercooler freezing related issue. I am on vacation with my 2013 Audi A6 C7 3.0tdi in Finland (-20°Celcius), and i have the EGR fault p0402 (excessive flow). The car is on limp mode, it started fine and it works fine but no power. This happened just the day after i came here (really cold weather). Do you think it's related? And what do you think i should do? Now that i heard your explication for the damage that can be done in the garage while the eventual ice melts and creates further problems, i am starting having doubts if going to the garage?? Can you help

    • @CoolAirVw

put it in the garage. Let the ice melt. Drain it out of the intercooler piping. PUll the glow plugs, crank the starter to clear any water from cylinder through the glow plug holes, then reassemble and drive.

It presents itself to me as hard starts, stubbling starts, rough idles, no power after start, power cutting when accelerating, or hiccups on the hughway. It starts to appear when the temperatures start to hit the low forties. I just block the entire lower portion of the grill and it seems to help. And I always give it enough throttle to build full boost every drive so that any water gets "processed".

Tell them it wouldn't start and your mechanic drained the intercooler and removed the glow plugs to clear the water from the cylinders.
