My long time best friend is super christian, and we have spent the better part of the past 4 years attending a prestigious university, where I can assure you, we have had a lot of religious arguments that *did not* consist of "X needs to get a life, he is stupid". There are a lot of really smart, creative, intelligent people in the metal world who have been labelled as blasphemers or sinners simply because they have opinions or viewpoints on certain things that differ from the Westernized Christian popular opinion. While I will agree that I find Satanism to be a foolish concept, and normally I find satanic metal acts to be a disgrace to the genre that only feed the negative stereotypes that the common man has against our culture, Gaahl is a brilliant artist who creates music not only with his words or with his political/religious ideas, but with the full passion of his heart, he creates an aesthetic, or an ambiance, that is unparalleled in any other genre of music. It is a tone that strikes deep within the most inane, bestial, base parts of man, and the occultist imagery that bands like God Seed or Gorgoroth use are quite often simply used to evoke such a reaction within your soul, no different from the elemental tone of their song. There's nothing inherently evil, sinister, or sinful about liking a form of art that touches the emotional core of your soul. If this was the case, then almost all forms of music today would be nonexistent, because the Romantic Movement, which gave prominence to many great musical composers such as Beethoven and Bach, was founded by a group pf poets and writers who referred to themselves as "Sturm Und Drang", which is German for "Storm and Stress". The movement was founded upon creating works of art that may or may not be intelligible on a cerebral level, but solely upon creating works of art that gave absolute freedom to expressing all sorts of powerful emotions. Most of the metal genre, including Gaahl and God Seed, are descendants from this movement, and have focused around creating an art form that can not be understood with the brain, but can only be understood with the soul. While I understand that you seem to be a Christian (there's nothing wrong with that, in fact, one could make the argument that being a devout follower of a faith that is ideally rooted on the principles of essentially being a better human being is a very good thing), as a life lesson, you would do well to open your mind to other forms of art, and, if you're going to formulate an opinion on any movement, whether it be religious, artistic, political, psychological, societal, or anything else, you should try and seek to understand it past the idea that you believe it is projecting and gaze deep into the heart that it is attempting to reach. There is a lot of good, intelligent, non-religious (or religious) art within the metal genre, and especially within the black metal genre...it takes only a basic intellectual approach to sift past the surface and truly comprehend the message or emotion that it is trying to convey.
