This is a hidden gem of an activity. It lasts for a few months during the summer every year. There are many different corps that compete against each other all with different styles.

I marched drum and bugle corps from the age of 8 till i was 21. Absolutely the best times of my life. FYI.. The Hornline scored a perfect score this show

I LOVE DCI!! I marched Carolina Crown 2022-2023, it’s awesome to see the activity getting some appreciation. You’re correct, it’s extremely difficult visually and musically. Our summer season is all day every day from mid may to mid august, and that doesn’t include the offseason. I would say the hardest thing is the multitasking, you have to keep track of about 100 things at once like how you sound, how you look, where you are in the field, time responsibilities, if you’re matching people around you, and so many more things at once and if you zone out for even a second it screws up everyone around you. Thanks for the reaction!!

DCI is such an amazing thing, and not enough people know about it! People audition and are selected by the corps, then they practice for just a few weeks, and then go on a competitive tour in the summer. It's INCREDIBLY physically demanding, as well as requiring extreme musical ability. It takes teams of professionals to put these shows together -- it's a whole world to check out! Thanks for exploring it!

This activity is longer than most think. The bands hold auditions during the winter, then meetup a couple times over the next couple months to learn music and their show. They get together in early June after high schools and colleges go on summer break for their "pre-season" practices. They then go on "tour" starting the last weekend in June, sometimes earlier, and go all the way until the get to their championships the 2nd weekend in August in Indianapolis, IN at Lucas Oil Stadium. Sometimes these bands can perform 3-4 times a week. They normally perform in California, From San Diego to Sacramento, 7 times in a 2-week span, then 2 days later then they perform in Utah and Colorado, then head to the Midwest/East Coast for more competitions. The Drum Corp International Championships spans a 3-day period. The first day all the corps (in the neighborhood of 30+) compete to advance to the semi-finals the next day. On semi-finals day, the top 25 perform with the top 12 making up the Drum Corp International Finals lineup.
I have worked on the broadcast production crew for several events and just about every time the bands are at the venues before I get there the day of the event to finish setup, sometimes that is around 9am for a 7pm show. The kids put in a ton of work in these performances, and it shows.

yeah, Technically you could say the season is from November-August. Auditions November-February, Camps March-May, Move-ins in Late May/Early June, then Tour late June-Mid August.

I did my rookie year of drum corps this past season and yes, it is extremely difficult and takes a lot of training. But it is one of the most fun things I have ever done and am definitely doing it again this year

Learning drill for a show is so interesting! You’d think it’s difficult to memorize all your coordinates on the field, but you repeat the process so sooo many times that it almost feels like muscle memory after awhile! Lots of time spent 😁❤️

Drum Corps is considered the "Major League" of the marching arts. It combines music, military drill elements (marching styles and rifles), formation design, dancing, etc. Corps participants are high school and college students up to age 21. Thousands of young people dedicate their summers to this activity, and several thousand more audition and don't make it. The cost varies depending on the corps, but can be as high as 8-10 thousand dollars per year.

You should watch a few more of these. Many great shows out there. 2008 Phantom Regiment, 2011 Cadets would be two that I think you might like. Hard not to like DCI. Their drill is amazing, playing grade 6 music, just stellar young men and women. Such skill. Hours upon hours of individual and group practice. It is dedication, pure and simple.

8+ hours a day of practice. This is Drum Corps International. All brass, percussion, and color guard. These are considered professionals of the activity. The best of the best.

Great show to start you on this journey. Highly recommend Blue Devils 2017, Carolina Crown 2015, Santa Clara Vanguard 2018, and Phantom Regiment 2008. These young people are aged 16-21 in high school and college and prepare for months in advance to perform these shows every summer for our enjoyment. Welcome to the wonderful world of drum corps. This is the best it gets.

I was in a group like this. You exert more energy doing this then a football player. To get this good the corp is either traveling on a bus, competing or performing.

Thank you so much for reacting to this video and welcome to the DCI world! I was in this audience on finals night. I go to shows every year and I’ve never been part of a crowd that was as energized, passionate, and emotional toward a show as this one. Joe Allison, one of the judges during prelims who has since passed away, perfectly encapsulated how we felt that night. 10 years later, I still can’t listen to the end of his tape without crying: th-cam.com/video/9B697Rx6_nM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=tJkxhUnKoF9IYBem

I've been a fan of this activity since 1979. It has changed a lot over the years, and in a lot of ways that I'm not fond of. These days they use guitars, keyboards and amplification. In the old days, it was only horns, drums and colorguard, and everyone marched, including timpani and bell/xylophone players.
I took my daughter, who was in her late 20's at the time, to see this show in Charlotte in 2013 and she was blown away. Every time I would look over at her, her jaw would be on the ground.
I personally prefer the earlier versions, before they added all the glitz and glamour. The marching and formations were almost comical by today's standards, but the music was out-of-this-world!
I'll link a few of my favorite performances here:

    - Carolina Crown always works a crown into the formation somewhere in the closer.

    - Someone always dies in a Phantom Regiment performance. This is their 'Romeo and Juliet' rendition.

    - Phantom Regiment performing Stravinsky's 'Firebird Suite'.

    - Same show as above, but a different camera angle.
    th-cam.com/video/PZEUKuUd67Y/w-d-xo.htmlsi=fgRK6CdnZlngyDGQ
    - A beautiful version of 'Amazing Grace', but also shows their sleeping conditions while on tour.
    th-cam.com/video/1Ox8Adzekq4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Bu49K-isXczhRtlM
    - The Blue Devil's performance from my first show ever in 1979. My high school band director (who went on to become a DCI judge) bought the albums from this championship and loaned them to me to make cassette copies. I have the music from the entire show memorized.
    th-cam.com/video/UTk6Cph2q-c/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ku9MTk7vjSVbRH6a
    - 1979 show from another corps, featuring possibly the best solist of all time, Jerry Noonan.
    th-cam.com/video/EIYFOr8QQLk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=DRommcBOsn80Rs-T
    - Another example of insane practice sessions.
    th-cam.com/video/EH4dsCRkZI4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=gkFNzQGmGWba5e_z
    - Another insane warm-up.

Time and effort involved = ballet + symphony + music conservatory + olympic pro athlete all collectively had a baby. Jan - May practice 2 nights a week 3 hrs, Sunday 6 hours. Once a month weekend camp rehearsals. Starting in June every day typically 9am - 9pm rehearsals with water, meal , bathroom breaks. Starting in July for 4-6 weeks non-stop travel, rehearsals, performances 15-20 local and regional shows leading up to World Championship Finals in August.

Here's a reply to your question "How much time does it take to perfect this". This is a short clip of a pre-perfomance practice session. They do this on average 12 to 14 hours a day from late spring through the end of summer, with equal emphasis spent on practicing the music and the marching and maneuvering...
