I have had lived in Calcutta, WB (1998 - 2005) and some more cities in India. Calcutta is the ultimate, amazing and the most beautiful city to live in. The Armenians, BENGALIS (THE DOMINANTS) , Parsis, Jews, Anglo Indians, Chinese. Nahum's, China town, Coffee House and thousands more to add on. The perfect blend of Europe and the United Kingdom ..I have had never felt home alone. The best place in India to be. No wherein India I could find all of these!

I'm not an Anglo Indian, I was a Chinese Indian but now i consider myself as Chinese Canadian. I lived in bow barracks till I was 11, this is the first time in 50 years I looked at where I was from And i must say I'm blown away by the vid, lots of memories.
Btw , what happened to the elementary school not far to the north? I remember wearing blue and gold.

Its said most Anglo Indians who were worth their salt left India by late eighties and early nineties, similarly many Goans left to Portugal and took up citizenship there. The anglo Indians left today are the poor ones who couldn't manage to migrate, if you notice most of them are not rich, the rich ones are already in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and some Caribbean islands.

Anglo community is dying its slow death. I have lived among the Anglo. Almost all of them migrated to Australia and England. Very few left. They are not finding matrimonial match in their own community hence stepping out of the bound to marry Bengalis and the offspring becomes like the men in the commentary. Indian Government gives lot of respect to this fleeting community. If not protected, this community will vanish for good.

India would owe the development of the Railways to the Anglo-Indian... Then how about the Customs Departments, the Posts and Telegraphs, the English medium schools, colleges and kindergartens, the beautiful air hostesses, the fashion shows, dance schools, stewards and hostesses in most upmarket establishments, and the Hockey and Cricket teams...
How about the acting and film schools, the dress designing and tutoring schools, the anglo-indian cuisine and administrative services? We can keep naming a dozen more of Indian infrastructure first established and nurtured by Anglo-Indians. We cannot miss the army and air forces, the sea faring anglo-Indians and the air line pilots that grew these service industries...

Those who are saying that they don't look like anglo Indians, they have to learn who the Anglo Indians are, they are a mix of both British and Indians during British Raj, remember during British Raj, and that too during the initial years of Raj,because British had later banned from marrying or any having any sort of relation with Indian men/women. Modern day Anglo Indians are a the offsprings of their children, who on later generations, never been able to marry or have any relation with a person of pure British blood. So, majority of the Anglo Indians, Mostly look just like any other Indians. I have a seen a lot of people from Anglo Indian community, they easily pass of as Indians.

none seemed like an anglo Indian... My classmate was better Anglo Indian than any of these people. He was blond (Half Australian-English and half Indian) but spoke perfect Hindi.

I believe you don't really understand what anglow Indian mean!
It's an Indian Gene mixed with some other gene and the offsprings can be brown ,black, blond ,purple or even green you need to be a genetic engineer to guess the results.

Most of these are not first generation Anglo-Indian.
They would have had a great-grandparent or a grandparent that was Anglo.
Also, I'm confused with the Patel lady, as she said she was Parsi and Filipino, so not sure why she'd be considered as Anglo

It looks like a slum. It need full renovation to bring the buildings back to the way it should be. I'm I correct in saying that nobody pays rent to the building owners. Please let me know, because I have heard many stories about this topic and who do you believe in Calcutta.

It's not only Anglo Indians. Everyone leave Calcutta for better opportunities elsewhere. My dad left 30 years ago for Mumbai and says it's the best decision of his life. Sadly there is no progress in Calcutta. We're losing on such amazing culture there including the Chinese which is also migrating.

As an old Anglo Indian I revisited the country of my birth, many years ago when Indira Gandhi had the Emergency. It was much changed to what we had departed from in 1965. The people who called themselves Anglo Indians were no longer familiar to me, as most were hardly any different to Indians. India has done a good job trying to erase the British occupation. English has gone and so are the names familiar to old residents. It will finally come of age as this cultural cringe of promoting a mono culture is recognised for what it is.
