I disagree. The main goal is to improve the major league team and if they can trade prospects to increase their chances of winning the WS then they should definitely trade them. I don't think they should trade all of them because they're the future, but these prospects aren't guaranteed. Phillies are in win now mode. I think people fall too much in love with these prospects. Their path to the big club isn't linear and waiting 2, 3, 4 and maybe even 5 years for them to develop to a what if isn't going to help them win right now. But.....with that being said, it's going to hurt to see guys like Crawford, Miller, Rincon and Painter get traded.
People were high on Kyle Drabek. I mean, he was traded to get Roy Haladay, but I was really upset about Kyle and those other guys (I don’t know who they were, but I was upset they were included) were traded. I’m all in on trading Aiden Miller. Bohm doing a good job at third, Harper and Turner aren’t going anywhere, and I LOVE Stott. If I were the Phils, I’d sign Schwarber to a 2 yr extension. Get rid of Casty and get some younger talent for the corner outfield positions.
So nauseating how many people want to trade prospects just for the sake of trading them. Like every single one is apparently an automatic bust just because of the same lame references like Drabek and Sixto (who didn’t work out but initially looked like a monster for Miami before the shoulder injuries). The Phillies just invested so much money into Nola and Wheeler, on top of the Turner and Harper contracts, they need to find legit guys that are cheap and can contribute alongside them to stay competitive for the next several years. Alec Bohm might not be your 3rd basemen in 3 years because you just can’t sustainably resign everyone and stay competitive. But everyone wants to trade Aidan Miller just for the sake of trading him. “Trade Andrew Painter” even though they have no legitimate big league pitching depth going forward if one of the core starters goes down and his value is not at full value right now due to his injury. Not saying you hoard these guys, but so many people with these all-in mentalities and that could absolutely cripple the franchise if Dombrowski doesn’t absolutely nail these big trades being tossed around. Have to be smart with adding the best fits for the team and not just overpaying for the sake of looking splashy
I don't think people are saying they should trade prospects just for the sake of trading them. Not at all. With the exception of Abel, most if not all of the top ranked prospects Phillies have are in the low minors and we won't see them up for a while. Painter is recovering from injury and so we won't see him for quite a bit as well. I'd hate to see some of these players get traded, but if they can improve the big club then I think they should look to acquire major league players. Ideally, a player that's controllable for multiple years.
I agree with the future players this is why we better not trade any of them.
