    Really helpful video. Just got my router set up and am in practice mode. It’s salmon fishing season on the Siletz River on the Oregon coast, so very limited practice time till mid October. My plan is inset designs filled with colored resin. Maybe some lettering to go with the designs. It is good to see your monthly videos of others work to inspire what I like and might try.

    • @oldave100
      @oldave100  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's awesome, man! First of all, I love carving but fishing definitely tops that HAHA. Second, I like your idea of resin filling the lettering. We've done quite a bit of that. Be sure to email some pictures of your work so we can show it off! As always, if you have any questions, you can email me ryan@makeawoodsign.com or dad eric@makeawoodsign.com

    Good information. My experience with wide bits like 60° is the deeper the cut the more precise you have to be. The shallower may be a problem with sanding but you have more room for slight errors. The profile bits may require more time to carve but if your line isn't straight, you can come back and straighten it out. If you are experienced and confident enought, go deep and wide. Otherwise i prefer to go deep with a profile or a liner and make several passes taking off material as i go. Slower but my lines come out straighter. Lately my lines are getting better with a 60°

    • @oldave100
      @oldave100  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Manuel, you make some good points. Yes much more room for error when using the profile bit for inset letters. However I grew up carving onsite so I had to try everything I could to get faster but still have the quality. Using the 60 accomplishes that perfectly or me. On our new course Ryan and I go into lots of those kind of details and tons more. Thank you for the feedback and for watching!!!

    I do alot of my wood working at night, after kiddo is in bed, and my workspace currently is just my back porch ive enclosed and dont have great lighting up yet so its usually pretty dark trying to work. I wrapped a headlamp around my router handles and it bends around but thought about mounting a tiny led light strip around the base but dont want to loose any areas of my viewing where the strip would be, does your router have a light built into it? I mean itd be great to have a router like yours but ive got my old craftsman that i do really like and am very comfortable with too and dont have money to buy a new one either. Just curious how your lighting is set up on thag router? Oh oh ok i think youve done what im thinking of doing too; using tint battery powered twinkle lights mounted up on one side, i want to have them all the way around so i dont get any shadows though...im guessing youve got a video showing how you did that diy lighting set up on your router...i knew i wasnt the only one having the lighting issue. Why havent they made a router with a light built in though, dang be a smart build.

      Most of the new routers do have built in lights, but they're not the best. Here's a video on how we use the little fairy lights on our routers th-cam.com/video/EXqT3NchUYY/w-d-xo.html

    is there a v bit with somewhat of a small flat bottom for inset letters (flag stars v point fot start tips) that allow going around the shape and cleaning the bottom flat with the same bit

    • @oldave100
      @oldave100  ปีที่แล้ว

      We have a small 1/8" spiral upcut bit for small inset letters. However it doesn't have any v groove to it. I always use my v groove bits for points on stars. Then switch to the spiral if I want flat bottom. Hope this make sense. Let me know if you have any other questions, eric@makeawoodsign.com.
