  • Hello everyone - it was a very warm, sunny day here in Cornwall UK so I thought I would do some landscape drawing in the garden. I wanted to try these Paul Rubens oil pastels so it was a good chance to relax into a landscape drawing.
    They were really nice to use. Very soft and creamy with bright, vibrant colours amongst the softer neutral greys and earthy colours. Easy to layer up and work into with graphite sticks or pencils. Definitely worth trying if you fancy working with oil pastels for a change. I think they would make a brilliant medium for plein air sketching.
    There is a special offer event on Amazon UK 26 June - 2 July if you're interested in these Rubens oil pastels. Check it out. For more info:

    Here are the key feature of this set supplied by HaiYa oil pastels:
    1. Creamy Texture: They are super smooth and soft to use. The soft texture allow them to perform great for blending and mixing!
    2. Novel Design: The new bullet design and cylindrical paint allow to grip and draw comfortably!
    3. 72 Vibrant Colours: 48 vivid colours and providing strong coverage, showing the texture effect of oil painting!
    4. Affordable Price: This set of oil pastels is very affordable, high quality, and also perfect for beginners.
    In terms of shape, it adopts a bullet design and has a beautiful shape. There are also some adjustments in the material formula, less oil will be produced, and it is obviously softer and smoother when used. These oil pastels have information about pigments, light fastness, transparency on the paper sleeve. Besides, this set offers a cheaper price while maintaining high quality, perfect for artists who want high quality oil pastels at a favourable price.
    *As a side note - I wasn't paid to try / review the oil pastel set. This is just my personal opinion of how they performed working outdoors.*

    Very vibrant. These seem to be good pigmented and it looks that they go down on the paper pretty smoothly.

    Love it! My oil pastels (I use Sennelier) and Neocolor crayons melted once when I took them outside in the summer. I’ve stopped using them outdoors if the temp is above 65 F. I live in Tennessee, US so it gets humid here-I’m not sure what your weather was like that day, but I’m not surprised they started to sweat in the sun.

    Hi Andrew ... This was a nice demonstration/sketch ... You showed how the pastels lend themselves well to building up different tones by layering colors over each other ... Perhaps a paper alittle smoother may help to blend better ... I have these pastels but have not used them so you've inspired me to give them a try! ... Love all the bird sounds in the background also ...

    Oil pastels work very well over a water colour underpainting. But also they can be manipulated and blended with solvent (turps, OMS etc). Either or both options deal with the problem of the medium leaving white spots. Also, they are good on smooth paper and can be pushed about with a rubberised tool and scraped back as shown in this video. I find them difficult but for some reason find myself drawn to them.

    You may have re-converted me to oil pastels - mine are extremely old, the old Guitar brand (Japanese). These look much better - the melting would be the wax, which is a large component of oil pastel; the older they get, the more inclined they are to snap; so I must overcome my meanness, and invest in what looks like a very good product. If only we had unlimited resources, eh? I'd love to try Ceracolour, from Natural Pigments/Rublev; planning on trying casein; all the while keeping up my supplies of oil paint, and acrylic, and watercolour; the pencils, the pens, the supports.... specializing can get a bit boring, but it'd also be a hell of a lot cheaper.....

    • @AndrewBarrowmanArt
      @AndrewBarrowmanArt  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Robert. That would definitely explain the melting in the sun. You’re right about all the materials we like to try 😃

    In my estimation, this video provides visual substantiation what what I have always felt about oil pastels as an art medium. And this is that it is quite an insensitive medium, and cannot produce well-controlled results because of its inability to be blended so that drawings are characterized by spotty unpleasant results. I've seen a lot of art in my long career, but have virtually never seen a really excellent artwork done in oil pastels. Because of the crudeness and insensitivity of oil pastels, artists would be much better served to stay with almost any other drawing medium.

    • @AndrewBarrowmanArt
      @AndrewBarrowmanArt  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes it is a difficult medium but can be useful for sketching in the field. I was surprised how they started to melt in the sun too!
