This is so exciting. Usually they only advice nicheing down, imaginary deadlines, etc. But creativity and imagination don't really work like that. Sure maybe this is not idea for people in a company... but for independent creators this just seems more logical. Guilt will eat you up, better to keep going with the flow until you end up ready to release something.
A clear indicator to help realize that you are on the right path is when you receive significant feedback of thanks for thoroughly conceptualizing something that others have only experienced as a vague uncomfortable feeling.
Through your highly personal introspection, you regularly tap into something quite universal. Your ability and willingness to push past the senses of discomfort or vulnerability to share something truly helpful is unquestionably one of your finest gifts.
Your value is infinitely multi-dimensional. ✌️
That actually made a lot of sense to me. I'm working on a big project in blender (and one of my first actually), and it's taking month to get to a result.
I have a list of things I have to do, so I stay organised and don't forget points. But I force myself to follow the list and to not jump to different points. I've stopped working on the project because I just don't feel like doing certain points right now, but I convinced myself I need to; when I could totally jump to other points further in the list that i actually want to do right now and that will still contribute to the project I want to do
And I hadn't really realized I was blocking myself by setting up expectations of what I should do but didn't want to do right now
I think what helped my motivation was removing myself from groups and forums and most social activities. I am learning Blender for printing models and terrain and I think I got exhausted with people telling me I am wasting my time. "Too many creators," "bad value," "race-to-bottom," I feel slightly more energetic now though.
💯. Use socials only insofar as they inspire you, then tap out! For me these days that pretty much means TH-cam and the occasional browse on artstation lol
That was an interesting take, thank you for sharing it. I especially like the pooling idea - not necessarily just for the sorting of "moods", but also as a way to sort between what is worth showing publicly on large platforms/social media/in a curated portfolio (say : anything worthy of the Finished Projects pool), and what is appropriate for more private exchanges with like-minded people or on specialized art discussion forums (anything that falls in the WIP or Experiments pools).
About "feel like" vs "have to" : one good way to resolve this is to work for a client and with a deadline, as opposed to only doing self-sustaining work. It still allows for a bit of "feel like" experiments, but only it the "have to" parts are done and delivered.
🐶I love the Dyson sphere analogy for capturing your creative work. This clicked with me because I usually actively procrastinate and do not do what I "need" to be doing.
I'm new to blender but experienced in the struggle of crativity driven ADD. This made sense for me even outside of blender, as I try to incorporate my creative bursts as much as I can in my life and in my future line of work (i study medical engineering). I will become a familiar face as I heard this advice like it was coming from a friend that was also facing the same struggles. Keep up being you and see you in the next comment section :)) 🔚
Love these kind of videos. I think you rly hit a new focus for your YT-content. Since the beginning of this year I seem to struggle to convince my mind that I can have a future as an independent 3D-Artist and I've been working on this for over a month now. Videos like this one, artists talking about the struggles of being an artist rly help with that. Knowing other ppl deal with the same problems. Looking forward to more insights like this 🐶💗
I am 100 percent with you about pooling idea
I certainly do. To be okay with it and get back on the wagon I usually purchase a course that teaches something new. In this instance- geometry nodes. It’s hard af for my brain to comprehend, but hitting all the right notes at the moment to get me reengaged with moving ahead with design.
I'm in Ukraine and I feel like I live on another planet and facing completely different challenges than rest of the people in the world. But still trying to make TH-cam about blender, at least useful videos left when I'm gone.
You got this man. It's something to focus on for your future. You gotta believe in it. Stay safe brother
@@demonpigeon Thank brother! Im trying.
Aaah, the eternal creative conundrum. Well thought out reasoning Curtis. I like the pool idea. At work, I have implemented weekly R&D or creative exploring sessions for me and my team. It helps break the linear production process. I would like more time devoted to this process, but possibly in different ways.
🐶First time I'm commenting with an emoji I think. I love how this whole information video was black and white! it helped me focus on what you were saying more and it made your poin't much clearer! Good Job Curtis!
Right in time, i've been in quite a creative block for some time. I hope this helps me. Thank you!
🐶 Thank you for your perspective and time!
🐶This! This is the video I've been needing to understand myself. I need to go back and watch the Burnout video as well. This process of non-linear workflow is exactly what I need to consider with the 3 metric tons of writing, art, story crafting, and meticulous detail work I need to do for my job that I've been floundering at with the overwhelming aspect of what I need to accomplish. The guilt mentioned here has been a daily obstacle that's causing so much executive dysfunction, so the idea of pooling and going with my brain on what I want to do sounds so... right. Thank you for putting this out there for people like me that desperately need to find ways of motivating ourselves counter to what is considered "normal".
🐶love this idea. Resonates a lot with my own tendencies / inner duality ( linear orderly thinking vs. distracted chaos ). I think having multiple streams of creativity that overlap is probably also a great way of avoiding burnout. I often get tired if a project drags on for too long, this way I'm having fun and finishing stuff is just a byproduct. Will give it a try.
Also, impressively articulate for a one take ramble haha
Yes, great tips towards work and creative, thanks Curtis!
🐶🐶 fantastic video. I agree that your sine wave video is one of your best [I don't think I can call it THE best, just cause that's hard to quantify. But it's up there].
This is one of if not the best video I've seen about motivation. It resonates a lot with how I feel about working on projects and the guilt that comes with diversion. Finally, the concept of working in pools is brilliant! I'll surely make use of it. 🔚
i have never seen a video that relate to me like this. thank you for unlocking thig for me 🐶
Thanks for this video! Made me rethink my own approach to myself.
Yes this video definitely has some elucidatory points that made me think! Thanks for that 👍
This really makes sense!! Thanks for your insights! As a creative, I might try the 'pool' concept myself here!
🐶
Thanks for this video Curtis, I have been feeling a similar way recently, so thank you for this!
🐶woot! The struggle is real. I always enjoy and value your insight.
This is super helpful! thank you for sharing Curtis
really love the concept sicne it ties directly into the philosophy of life as music 🐩🐩
When u have slow laptop, And you are still making models and trying and continuing and never give up, is key for success
، my laptop asus .m920 nvidia 2 giga
500 giga memory.
Wow, really clicked with this one. Been trying my best to keep a balance between being creative and productive, and this really helps! Love the idea of merging creative diversions with your primary goal. I've also been trying to strike a balance between making sure I'm actually learning new things when working on my projects, as its quite easy when you are tired to toggle auto pilot, which isn't always a bad thing, but is maybe something to try and address when looking for improvement. Also, I know you do this a ton, but building up your physics workflow to fit you more is definitely something I need to think about more. I've definitely been demotivated to finish some projects due to some sloppy file and folder management. 🐶
Im not a professinal, so if i get something wrong, feel free to point that out. So! This workflow actually very much supported by scince. I dont remember the details, but basycally every activity will drive humans into boredom and only switching the activity is somewhat easy answer to that. Another answer, but very hard to use, is "get bored of boredom". Basycally power through boredom by doing some amount of nothing and receptors of "boredom chemicals"(idk how they called, i just remember there is some) in your brain will get numb and you will stop feel boredom.
🔚 Really useful one, thanks
🐶It's nice seeing you doing art again! :)
🐶 Another great one, some of that really resonated with me too.
Curtissa Holt. 💅
🙀thanks it was really interesting point of view and thinking. i will try to figure out what works for me!
🐶I might give it a try. Thanks Curtis🔚
