  • The old Brown Shoe Factory that now houses Dalton Storage on West Main and College Street in Salem went up in flames quickly Wednesday night.
Salem Firemen received the first call around ten pm and the first firemen on the scene reported the building was quickly becoming fully engulfed. The fire spread so quickly not much could be done to save the structure.
The blaze also spread to the home of George and Crystal Sloat at 521 South Pearl. Firemen initially concentrated on that blaze as the factory building fire burned out of control.
A State Deputy Fire Marshall was called to the scene to help determine the cause of the fire. Odin, Mt. Vernon City, Centralia City, Kinmundy-Alma, Odin, Iuka, and Kell Firemen were all called for mutual aide assistance.
The Red Cross is assisting at the scene. Marion County Civil Defense and Salem Emergency Management Agency are assisting Salem Police and Marion County Sheriff's Deputies with traffic.
When power was cut to the old factory, power also went out to large sections of the north and west side of Salem. Many of the stop lights are not working as a result of the power outage.
