1) nature of a research
2) exploratory, descriptive, and explnatory
3) exploratory - explore - initial research into a hypothetical or theoretical idea - a) taking well defined theories and applying them in your area (e.g., old theory in newly emerged phenomena - are they relevant?); b) developing your own theories from a scratch.
4) descriptive? - describe (attempts to explore and explain while providing additional information about the topic) - of higher order - builds on exploratory research; usually requires a lot of data
Someone needs to tell you what type of data to collect - thanks to that you can go about with your descriptive research.
5) explanatory - highest order of research - looks at correlation and explains it - tries to explain relationship b/w variables - build on both exploratory and descriptive research.
Exploratory - identification of variables
Descriptive - draw correlations b/w variables - correlation does not imply causality - that will be the task for explanatory research - try to explain why things happen?! - this is hard!!!
Exploratory - what is happening in there?
Descriptive - how do these things work together?
Explanatory - why those things are happening?

I have a question because the RQ wording confuses me: If I have a RQ that asks "DID the Covid-19 pandemic influence students' math abilities?" Would this question be descriptive? It's not explaining why it impacted the math abilities but if they were impacted.
