Hi smoggy.loving your videos.especially the kayak stuff.we do wild camping up here in rural aberdeenshire and you inspire us to do more.your weird sense of humour always gives us a laugh.cheers Lee and pauline from Huntly.
Hi Lee, thankyou for your kind comments it really means a lot. I’m glad that you get my humour too as most people just think I’m weird without the humour part 😂 Thanks for the support and I hope 2024 brings you both some epic new camping experiences. Mike 😁
After a night out in Geordieland with wonderfull family and grandchildren, doing Christmas lights and shizzle, it was great to get back to Smoggyland and relax with a beer and watch your vid at 1 am. Love the the haystacks trivia, i never knew. 😂 Excellent Mark, i mean Mike. 😅
As a matter of interest , why get a Soulo RL instead of the BL, the BL only being a pound heavier but 20% stronger poles and 50% stronger fabric, the price about the same? The title of the video says you should start wild camping in winter, yet you advise starting in summer to get your layers right?
At the time I couldn’t get hold of the BL. There was a waiting list for one but I was like an inpatient child and couldn’t wait.😂 Yes I suggest if people enjoy wild camping but have only done it in the summer months then they should definitely start going out in the winter months. This way they’ll already have some good knowledge of their own set up and equipment as well as having some knowledge of particular areas in regard to fells etc. I wouldn’t advise anybody to go out winter camping for their first wild camp, especially high up on the fells. I believe at the very least it could be a very cold, miserable experience, and at the other end of the scale I believe it could be very dangerous. Without first gaining experience and having the correct equipment that they know how to use in bad weather, in the dark and alone, it could end in disaster. For instance, I’m still finding strengths and weaknesses in certain bits of gear that is tested so much more in subzero temperatures. This last winter camp I realised that my Rab 900 sleeping bag isn’t the insulated beast I thought it was. I was okay but next time I will invest in some better under layers for sleeping in.
Trying to keep a straight face as you mention the lost needle 😂 great vid, motivates me to get kit sorted and get out there. I just need a softy jacket to replace fleece (takes valuable space) and then I'll be happy and comfortable stepping out into the great unknown! Oh...and a knife too...just in case...happy Christmas sir. Looking forward to the next one.
Hey Mr. Spielberg here. Really enjoyed your short movie, there was some excellent cinamatography. Maybe we could talk over a whisky and a few bourbons? Anyway I'll get my people call your people. For now Merry Christmas and keep doing what you're doing. (But not naked!) 😂
I use an app called ‘windy’ as well as ‘wind compass’ and I use mountain weather reports website and the met office up until I have no signal. Sometimes I still get it wrong tho 😂

Glad to see someone else does the knife thing 😂 I can't pitch near an edge as I imagine someone taking the pegs out and rolling me off😂😂
😂 I use mine for anti drowning wind protection techniques, super noodle sausage chopping and werewolves if I’m in the woods 😂
Absolutely brilliant Mike 👏
Mint, I might have a trip to the lakes one day.
