In this excerpt, after Sidious sends Nute Gunray the gift, he contacts him. Sidious offers a partnership between the Sith and the Trade Federation. But it seems Gunray isn't too convinced.

This is Canon for me!
I think the canon rules are like...if it doesnt effect new canon it can fit. I say this fits well. Out of all the books and movies in new canon we never hear or see about Gunray meeting Sidious. Only that he appears in Phantom Menace.

How did Gunray know what a Sith Lord was?
During this time Sith Lord had many stories or legends if you would.
the Force are about as understand as the modern conception of the Templars/Crusaders were. Their general existence and purpose is understood, but most people couldn't tell you the difference between a Hospitaller, Templar, Vicar, Priest, etc, or the tenets of the religion.
He was also sitting at a giant computer screen at the moment of the holo call meaning he could just instantly look up what Sidious was talking about while on the call
