    In this Our Changing Climate climate change video essay, I look at how white supremacy pervades not only the history of environmentalism and environmentalist leaders, but also how white supremacy now threatens the climate change movement and climate action today. The forefathers of environmentalism, conservation, and preservation like Gifford Pinchot, John Muir, and Teddy Roosevelt all espoused white supremacist ideas that were often intermeshed with their views of the natural world and environmentalism. Later as authors like Paul Ehlrich stoked fears of overpopulation, these racist sentiments were blended once again into concerns about overpopulation. In short overpopulation and environmental destruction as a result of overpopulation were wielded as racist and white supremacist tools to oppress people of color, especially in the majority world. Now, mass shooters and eco-fascists are harkening back to the environmentalist, racist, white supremacist views of the past and using climate change as a dangerous weapon and excuse to harm people.

      ill tell you what the problem is, i am poor, and my family is poor. every little price increase is a really big deal to us... and we pay. gas prices are super high in our area because there are tons of taxes on it. i dont even drive or have a car even though it makes my life fairly awful.
      when i do finally get a car, i will likely not be able to afford a hybrid, nor does my building even have a charging station. i desperately want to help the environment, but not at anymore costs to me. its not fair im doing more than my part and no one cares about people like us at all. and all this stuff hurts us more than it has helped.
      if you want people to support environmental stuff like renewable energy, the money i spend has to be less, not more. literally everyone will support that unless they are directly making money from selling fossil fuels

      @@MrJuanmarin99 I could be wrong but my guess is car sharing is a really good option within a city but in smaller towns or in sprawling suburbs it's harder to implement.
      However that's a good piece of advice. Maybe the OP will be able to try that out!
      I have owned a car for only half a year now and I gotta say it does get so expensive even though it's a cheap car without any technical issues that I'd need to repair. From the cost of fuel to yearly technical inspections and oil changes, it all adds up.
      As far as car sharing, rental and EVs go it's a great option but we should generally strive more for improving public transportation rather than just making individual modes of transportation a little more eco-friendly.

      @@RyukyuStyle I agree, and that's the point, usually the environment friendly option is cheaper since it is more efficient, but oil barons and car industrialists forced the closure of city public transports so that they could sell cars and oil. Look it up, the US used to have hundreds of tram and bus systems before the 1930s. They were brought up and shut down deliberately by automakers and oil companies, and this basically happened around the world. The more public transport there is, the cheaper it becomes since economies of scale kick in.

      @@papasscooperiaworker3649 It is not rare to see some ecological measure being heavily critized by a part of the media, which push comparison to the extreme - for eg last year, a mair of a town decided to not have pine tree as decoration, and these media spoke about some autoritarian measure which would destroy our own tradition and our feeling of being french. The term ecofaciste may not be the one used, but the comparison with totalitarism was there.

    Reminds me of that woman who asked the question about population rise and climate change in Yang's town hall. I'm glad he informed her of the truth, but it's scary how many environmentalists (including that recent documentary produced by Michael Moore) just throw their hands up and say overpopulation is the problem without even considering nuclear power.

    A bit different from the usual but an interesting video. And pretty sad.
    Now that developed countries noticed the damage our lifestyle on the envirinment, it's not a cool idea to let developing countries build a system like ours.
    By that I mean developed countries should focus on offering eco-friendly support solutions so they can export financial stability without environmental downsides...
    But that's not profitable

      It can be though. Renewables are increasingly competitive with fossil fuels and are only going to be more so in the future as the technology and supply chains get better. And developed countries/NGOs can use subsidies to make them more affordable earlier.

    Interesting, although certainly not an easy topic. I doubt the notion that such environmentalism was an excuse for racism, though. So environmentalism wasn't a tool to express racism, but racism was a tool to solve environmental issues.

    Great video! I would have loved to see you drive in the point of how ridiculous it is that a lot of modern “environmentalists” are obsessed with the environmental impact of the birth rate in developing countries like those in Africa. Like, somehow the high birth rates in the least polluting countries is a bigger problem and is as worthy of addressing as massive corporations with no concern of their environmental impact.

    • @qascarface
      @qascarface 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ‘Developing’ is an important word. It almost inevitably leads to birth rate decline, but if the decline doesn’t keep up with development you end up with a massive population with a large individual demand for resources, and a big problem.

    • @alexguo8242
      @alexguo8242 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@qascarface yeah I can acknowledge that problem. It's just that the response in the general environmentalist consciousness is usually rooted in these eco-facists/racist ideas, and are akin to eugenics if not just a small step away from it (e.g. how do we prevent the population from exploding in Africa?). However, I think that the equitable and just way to think about it is instead, "how do we make sure that the infrastructure in developing nations is environmentally friendly and sustainable?" Obviously, this second question is much harder to tackle and will require coordinated efforts by big organizations or nations, so it's probably much less appealing than "Africans should have less children".

    • @nanivt1902
      @nanivt1902 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alexguo8242 The thing is that they and us (the west) should all have less children. Lots of nations are banning abortion and making easy birth control methods expensive and unavailable, moreover they are promoting 2 or more children per family (by policies like tax reduction, favorable loans, etc) . Also, we aren't even close to be called sustainable. How could we make their infrastructure environmentally friendly if we can't even make our own? We aren't even willing to use atom energy, which would be our most helpful ally against the fossil fuel industry.

  • @crouton3455

    It's good to see this channel take on the more social side of climate change. It's easy to talk about wind turbines and single use plastics. Talking about how the societal structures we still have in place enable and even encourage unsustainable exploitation of natural resources is challenging and controversial but very much needed.
    p.s. I hope to see some thoughts about how we could reform society to naturally reward sustainability in the future.

    It's a fascinating topic. Extremism has interesting diverging and converging ideologies, and their roots are quite complex: e.g. the anti-vax movement on the left merging with the current skepticism of COVIDs morbidity; or as you stated, environmental conservation and eugenics from the right. However, I do contend that far-right play a smaller role in driving environmental policy today, largely due to a stronger prevailing doctrine of distrust of science and individual freedom above all else.
