When I was 16, I was in a psychiatric hospital for 8 months. Very suicidal and struggled with self harm and substance abuse. There was a point in my hospitalization where for 2 months staff members had to watch me 24/7. Had to watch me sleep, eat, use the bathroom, watch me shower, a staff member had to be next to me at all times. Definitely the lowest point in my life. There were many young kids there who had behavioral issues and many teenagers who struggled with similar things I had. There was once a 12 year old boy, he had such an intense eating disorder he was on a feeding tube. He didn't speak once, he just sat on the edge of his bed all day swaying back and forth, he was terrified of everyone. I don't remember seeing him ever have any phone calls or visits from his parents, and he had long, unkept black hair. I can't imagine what he may have been through. I also became friends with a girl once who had survived human trafficking and lived in and out of foster homes and juvi her entire life. She was sent to a residential treatment center, I was never able to get any of her contact info but I hope she is doing well now

As a former patient at a psych ward, we are usually just really bored so sometimes we do weird things. As long as we aren’t harming ourselves or others don’t be too alarmed. Also be kind, even though we are made to feel inferior than other humans doesn’t mean We aren’t human.

Once years ago I dropped in after work to visit a friend staying in the psychiatric ward of a state hospital. During my visit there was apparently a shift change. When I was ready to leave I walked out to the front exit and buzzed the door call alarm. I told the orderly that came: "I would like to leave now, please". "I bet you would" he said - and walked away! It took me around a half hour of absolute terror to convince him that I was actually a visitor - and to get him to unlock the exit for me. No more late evening visits from me, thank you!

A schizophrenic patient was brought by the police to us after he took off all his clothes and was directing traffic with two steak knives.
One time the patients were getting drunk but we couldn't figure out where the alcohol was coming from. It turned out they were making hooch from prune juice they got from the cafeteria and mixing it with sugar and letting it all ferment in a washing machine that was out of order and just sitting unused.

I work food service in a geriatric hospital, so I don’t spend much time on the floor, but I do have a few stories:
    - During orientation we went to the forensic floor as a part of our tour, and the patients were wandering around as they do. One of them stops, takes off his hat Haunted-Mansion-hitchhiking-ghost-style, and goes “Welcome To The Insane Asylum!”, then goes back about his day. Apparently he’s the most privileged patient in the hospital who can go outside without supervision so long as he stays on this specific path.
    - Once on a trip to take the pudding upstairs, there were a bunch of people in the room where we put the puddings & koolaid stuff, so we had to prop the door open with the cart. One lady came up to the cart and tried to grab one of the puddings, and immediately one of the nurses is like “no, you have to wait” and this woman just starts SCREAMING at us about how it’s not a big deal and how we should just let her have the pudding.
I have a few more but that’s really all I can think of rn

He said his worst experience in practice when there were two people at the hospital at the same time who thought they were Jesus, or Napoleon, or whomever. He thought that the Jesuses were the funniest because they kept trying to out miracle each other.

a patient was admitted by his adult daughter. He was telling everyone how he was a big talent promoter and came to the city to buy a 4 million dollar penthouse condo. He did have on his cell phone selfies of himself posing next to some local famous people and a lot of the staff including the unit psychiatrist seemed to believe him.. even though other employees including myself were saying "If hes set up enough to buy a 4 million dollar property why is he in this place and not some fancy little private facility? Finally i just accessed his safe bag and looked at what kind of pocket litter this millionaire had = bus pass , food stamp card , a pre-paid debit card and a couple strip club membership cards. Mystery solved.. but i was really astonished on how many staff were fooled by this clearly grandios, delusional guy.

Actually, I was doing my internship at a state hospital, while working full-time at the Emergency Room. At the state hospital, there was a young lady that had been admitted the day before and I was told by the nurse attending her that she had been diagnosed with schizophrenia because she thought she had been cursed and had a demon in her but other than that she was normal in her thinking. I smiled as I told the nurse that I was there in the ER when the EMS brought her in strapped down on a stretcher and as she passed by the ER doctor on the way to a room, the ER doctor said right in front of her that because she was acting out, she must be cursed and have a demon in her. The nurse looked shocked and said, " excuse me, I'm going to have to report that to the admitting doctor." Turned out the girl had her very first panic attack and she was released.

One of my ex co-workers, a very gentle person and the father of a 12/13 yrs old girl. This girl had been trying to commit suicide for the last 2 years. I said "trying to" because obviously she didn't succeed. Either my collegue or the wife/mother would luckily find her in the locked shower or in her bedroom, locked. They did everything, took her to numerous therapists, admitted her in those in-house facilities number of times but then when she comes home the next thing you know if you're away from her for 5 min, you come back and would definitely find her locked in the shower/bedroom trying to cut herself with a knife or razor or anything sharp she can find. Again and again. The time my colleague had shared this with me, he mentioned they got rid of all kinds of knives and sharp objects from the house. His wife doesn't work anymore because she had to be with their duaghter 24/7 to keep an eye on her. And for that to keep up with all her treatment costs plus their household costs he was doing 2 jobs for the week and on weekends he had another job. You coupd tell the guy was so exausted all the time!
For some reason suddenly he quit last month . And sadly I don't have his phone number. But I do pray for his girl and for his whole family as well.

1:30. Got quite a few bats that get around on my farm. Lifted wood and 2 flew out one day. My cat will catch them and bring them inside every second year. It's like you're sitting there thinking "damn that moth is blocking the light pretty bad. And you look up and it's a bat flying around in your house. AGAIN. I throw a towel or blanket up and that grounds them when they hit it. Get them wrapped in a shirt or something so I don't get bitten and outside they go. Videos of it are on my TH-cam probably 8 years ago. These are ABSOLUTELY TINY. Quite cute actually.

I've been in & out of psych hospitals since I was 25 - just turned 60. For the most part I've been treated pretty well. On the down side they wouldn't us to make calls without permission. Wake us up in the middle of the night. When I would have someone from church come in they were not able to give me Holy Communion because it had the tooth full of wine. I think I probably should be readmitted but, with the pandemic it's pretty tough finding a space.

I was brought in to a mental health ward last November. It was during the pandemic (Obviously), so we weren't allowed to have visitors. On my last day before leaving, there was a woman who kept shouting that she needed to go outside. There was a patient that needed an oxygen tank, so the latter got priority. The former kept yelling that she needed to go outside, and things were getting dicey. I'm not sure what happened afterwards as I was discharged some time later.

I was in the ward for suicidal ideation for about 2 weeks. I was in the elderly wing since I wasn't out of control, it was a little less chaotic than the others. One evening we were just hanging out and I kid you not a 300 lb man that was easily 6 foot 7 goes into another patients room, drops his drawers and leaves a nice turd on her floor.
The other patient comes out "He pooped on my floor he pooped on my floor!" I was shocked I didn't know whether to laugh or be horrified. They stuck him with the booty juice after doing that

Not me but my cousin who worked at a clinic for teens at the start of her career. She would vent to me and I could not believe she (who cries over everything and is a pretty fragile person) was dealing with this stuff. The thing that was stressing her most was that they kept assigning her to escort this girl to the ER every other day for shoving objects inside her body. Sometimes it was a pencil in her ear, sometimes it was a bar or soap up her vag, another time a deck of cards up there. I think one time it was a fork up her ass. My cousin had to go with her to get whatever it was removed and stitched up if it caused damage. She did it every other day or so and so they took everything away from her that wasnt nailed down. Well, they should have taken that stuff too. A week later and the girl comes out and says she has swallowed a handful of staples. Everyone was stumped as to how she got them. After my cousin came back from taking her to the ER they told her they figured it out. In the girls room was a crappy cheap nightstand bolted to the wall by an anchor. There was about an inch space between the back of the nighstand and the wall. It was mostly made out of crappy compressed particle board but the back was just thick cardboard stuck on with a staple gun. Ikea style. The girl had spent a week prying each one out with her own nails, collected them and then swallowed them.

In middle school I was in and out of short term psych wards pretty consistently for a long time (also did 3 residential facilities). One of my visits had me going to a completely different hospital about an hour away from my house (I’d attempted while at my outpatient therapy center.) and at that hospital I met a boy who looked like the Oncler who said he had a demon in him. I thought he was cute and immediately got attached to him and followed him around like a lost puppy for the 3 weeks I was there. He was probably gonna be moved to a long term facility and he said that if he was he’d get the demon in him to kill him because he didn’t want to be in a residential. The night before I left we sneakily exchanged Kik usernames and planned to message each other if he got out. He never messaged me. I thought he’d actually was killed by that demon and still wonder to this day whether he is alive or not.

Maybe if someone has had enough of life, let it end? Not everything is actually going to get better, no matter what motivational speakers say.
5:09 Well, that cruel nurse is why I say that not all nurses deserve the pity party they ask for. Maybe some of them really do deserve the bad things patients do to them.
14:40 Well, maybe the nurse had it coming. If I knew the nurse to be a terrible person, I might laugh.
15:04 Well, I don't feel bad if those billing agents don't get a cent, and are chased away by really angry people.
