I came across Wende's video while searching for various performances of "Wild is the wind". Well, I could not imagine that I would find this treasure... Wende's performance with Amsterdam Sinfonietta was striking... overwhelming... I dare to say divine... The classical style orchestration made the difference compared to other versions of the song and it provided the background for Wende to put her soul in this performance. Hence I say that this is a contemporary hymn to love. Thank you Wende! Chapeau Madame!... Thank you Amsterdam Sinfonietta!

The song was very popular and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song; Mathis sang the song at the 1958 Oscars. The Mathis version of the song was also released as a single in 1957 and reached number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100. Bowie was inspired by Nina Simone's version, who recorded the song twice for her 1959 albums Nina Simone at Town Hall and 1966 Wild Is the Wind. Bowie met her in Los Angeles in 1975 and was an admirer of Simone's style.
