I also like the words of Julian Bream on guitar - paraphrased... I think he paraphrased from Segovia too.
"When you play, you must always give consideration and care to each and every note. "
They are all there for a reason, but the reason for one note can be different than the reason for the one next to it.
I think this is a hallmark of a true master, both of an instrument and of a particular piece of music and it is something that I aspire to for anything I play that I care about.
