I Can't Believe It! || The Hunt for the Metre Flathead

  • Last year I set the goal of catching a metre Flathead on big swimbaits over the spring months but was unable to crack the full metre. It didn't sit right with me that I hadn't yet caught that big girl, so this year I started early travelling all over New South Wales and Queensland try to achieve the impossible.
I fished my local at Tweed Heads, my not so local up on the Gold Coast and many other spots up and down the coast.
I love challenging myself and this video was so fun to make, I hope this inspires you to get out there and really challenge yourself.
    Tight Lines,
    Mark Berg

Rodney is still the star 🌟! He so deserves the rocky theme music coz he's always fighting...Rodney doesn't get invited to Ballina? Coz he's the champ🏆! Still happy for you Bergy... but next time take Rodney coz he'll find the 1M! 🎉😂

I live on the other side from where you caught that big flathead Mark. I’ve caught bigger, but not often, to be fair. Try snorkelling in the swimming area in the enclosed Shaw’s Bay. You can hang in the water over them and watch them watching you. Best not to fish there though. In summer, I can sometimes walk down to the water, and have a flatty on the plate in 15 mins

Beauty of a fish mate. I used to brag to my partner while watching your show about how I had caught a bigger flathead than Mark Berg, but now I can't do that. Epic stuff mate. Beat me by 3cms. Fish that big are honestly breathtaking to see in person.
Ps would love to see you grind it out for the true metre plus specimen 👌

Bloody great fish mate, time and patience really pays off in the end. Like most of us here, my dream too is to catch the elusive 1m flatty. My PB 78 cm at the pin a few years back, halco laser pro 45 1.5m. It was bloody great fight and she swam away beautifully to give us more flatty's to battle. Tight lines big fella. 🎣

Great vid Mark Ive just discovered your channel....being from the GC I much prefer fishing the Tweed. Ive been pulling some nice fatties off the end of Boyds Island, my PB is 70cm 2 weeks ago I pulled up a 63cm but dropped a stonker. I'm fishing from a Hobie PA14 chasing jacks now you've got some great vids on chasing those too.

I love how there's all those bream there at the Yamba Shores Tavern - great fun for the kids to give them a feed. If you go back to Ballina again try heading a little bit more upstream towards the flats around Burns Point and Emigrant Creek - there's always decent flattys there and last session we had a really big girl get near the boat just out of net range before she just shook her head and cruised off.

I believe I have seen a metre monster in the channel at Lake Illawarra. I was standing up in my front steer boat heading back toward Winding bridge on a rising tide and I spotted a shape in about 4 foot of water that made me turn around and go over the same spot again. All as I can say is it looked massive in about 4 foot of water so out of the water it would have definitely been a monster. By the time I anchored and tried to flick something out it was gone.

At Tin can bay in Qld about 9 years ago I caught a 70 cm dusky flatty and thought it was terrific. About two months later I caught a 120 cm one and it blew me away. The jackal lure I always used is no longer available and I've never had another lure that performed so well. The big ones are only in certain areas and are very elusive.
