I use a Bic MatiC grip lead pencil. To help with your shading try using pencils with different graphite grades. Use soft graphite pencils like a 4B or 6B for dark values and hard graphite pencils like an H or 2H for lighter values. You can find pencils with different graphite grades at any art supply store like Michael's. But in the end all that matters is that you vary the pressure on your pencil when shading for better results.
I actually recommend drawing lightly at first so then you won't have a hard time erasing and messing up the paper. But if you want a tough surface to draw on then try cardstock or illustration boards :)
