Well done !!! That's the stuff people never think about. To often I hear some one say they bought a breeding pair of fish and the rest is profit. Unless people are unloading a lot of fish I think its safe to say selling fish is only to help support your hobby
Love the honesty here, I was considering hobby breading some fancy goldfish and selling them. But then I started thinking about how involved it is, I am not in the hobby for making money, hell I've spent over 6k on it with just my 1planted tank. I was thinking I could get some money back by raising the fry up, but then I had to factor in the good husbandry and culling what isn't healthy. It's just alot of work for so little return.
Soooooo many good points that folks overlook! I’m just beginning my pleco breeding operation here in MA and this video helps a lot! Couple quick questions for you: What size are the tanks on your rack? What do you pay roughly per month to heat all the tanks individually? Are they all separate or running on a sump? Thanks a lot! PS: bet you didn’t think 2 years ago when you made this that gas WOULD end up being cheap lol!
The selling part is a lot of work. I have not yet started active selling, but I have handfuls of folks ask to buy just from my youtube videos that have nothing to do with selling. Me and my wife work jobs that are almost an hour from the house so just getting the fish to the post office is quite the trick lol. All good points you brought up. I been in the hobby since I was 8 years old and now I'm pushing 40. This time around I went into it with the idea of selling fish to pay for itself and if there is profit then awesome. I think the most important thing that you touched on is breeding what sales, not what is your personal favorite. For example while I truly do love my guppies endlers and shrimp, if I raised what I really wanted to it would be severums and other american cichlids. Thanks for the video.
To the point. I see so many people saying Bristle Nose Plecos and everyone here has a mess of them. We are still setting up the fish room (Yea that is a huge investment) and videos like this really hit home with you have to minimize the running cost more than the initial investment. We have tanks here for pets and then the fish room will be for profit. A good point based on like you said Supply and demand. Viewers (future breeders) need to get on facebook and join the local fish groups. Be active and make a nice social network. Get to know the future customers. There is a breeder 75 miles form us that wanted a batch of fish here in town. I reached out to the seller and told him I will buy them for her. We did not have tanks ready to take them in so we set up totes for them for the next week. She will be in town in about a week and just happens to have 6 tanks (divided x3 for a total 18x 10 gallon fry tanks) and will be able to bring them to town for us then. A potential customer wanted 1 of the single fish from the buy. I let her know she can have it (after OK`ing it with the buyer). We will likely not even be breeding until the end of the year (6 more months) but from the day we decided this was a business model we wanted to explore we started working on creating future customers. What is really funny is because we got known fast in the community, we are very active (Hence this comment at 4:46am) we have people contacting us day and night offering us fish. We drove a fellow hobbyist out to pick up a used 55G tank. I saw a large Pleco I was like mind if I grab that? Not only did I get the Pleco I got the other 10 fish in the tank (To big for his tanks and perfect to ad to the breeding program). I picked up 5 Cichlids from another breeder out of town that were getting to big and did not fit her breeding program (these were for pets) She tossed in a couple breeding Prs of convicts and a bunch of babies. I got a call from a Petco they had an abused Oscar and a small Piranha $10 for the Pr. Goodman the Oscar is now a pet and the most interactive Oscar I have ever seen. We got a call to come rescue 50+ Sword tails. We will pick the best for breeding stock and the rest will be traded off. We even helped clean a pond full of nice sized Cichlids (again just to be nice nothing expected) I came home with 22 of them. They are also in the "pets" tanks. On that note people realize you may love Bluegills and Bass (as I do) but not a big LEGAL market for them. We have tanks around the house for Pets and then the fish room is for business. You do not have to give up being in the hobby to be in the business but you have to draw a line between business and your hobby. This is not easy but if you plan everything out from day 1. Set your limits and breed for the profit you can still have the fish you love.
I started back in the 60's in the hobby. I started with a small setup successfully breeding a few different strains of fancy guppies and angelfish varieties. I'm still doing it as of today and I must say... not for profit! Every dime I earn goes back into the hobby. That's all it still turns out to be, a hobby. Something one does because they enjoy it. Want to make profit with a small scale breeding setup, better find the correct fish for a high demand nitch and produce large numbers quickly. I think to many people think they can make boat loads of money. But as you pointed out in this video, there are lot's of time and expenses to consider.
This was insightful and informative. If/when I brave the "fish 4 profit" adventure, I'll be sure to start off as a break even kind of business and then gradually rise to the profit side of things. Seriously, all businesses should operate with the client's continual happiness as their primary motive...not just grabbing for more dollars. After all, if your clientele is uninterested in your stock...YOU ARE SO SCREWED!

Great video. Everyone seems to focus on the breeding aspect. If you want breed fish for profit you need to understand basic business principles. My problem is finding places to sell the fish. When they built Petco all the family run pet and aquatic stores went out of business. Too bad because this small Petco can't compare to the fish room that they replaced. I could breed a nice supply of fish, but without the demand for them and local buyers there isn't money to be made. Shipping live fish eats the profits. Good tips for any small business startup.

@@TheFishGuy I'm "THINKING about raising guppies for a SMALL hobby business but don't really so say have the space for a lot of tanks JUST yet, cause I live in a 24 X 24 cabin & 10 ft of the space is my kitchen bath/shower area & what's left is the other 1/2 of the cabin I have a few tanks 1-30 gal 4-10 gals 2-55's so that would be a GOOD start to get them going I am in a few guppy groups on face book & I've watched a TON of video's on everything I could find on the subject so I think I have a GOOD start with just 2 males & 6 females OR DO I??

Breading fish is something you do because you love it. All of us that have done this that are successful have started it as a hobby. To just go out and make an investment because you think your going to make money you will be very disappointed.
I have been talking to a few people on the guppy fish groups on what THEY doing & how they doing things to sell & I have got a PRETTY good idea about how it works being I'm new to the selling fish idea & all, I have done some research on things I'll need on if I sell online & how much the stuff I need is gonna cost to do it & kinda getting that all set up to go for when the time COMES so I have it all & so forth. The ONLY thing I'll need to do is get my guppies going strong & enough OF them to show a GOOD quality of them to people & as far as going to my LFS well that's out cause we don't have any :>( & there's BARELY any buyers OR sellers in my area so competition isn't a issue. but I will do this & think it WILL work, is go straight M/O's no checks or pay pal or anything like that & I'll HOLD the M/O for 7 days JUST in case I have a D O A issue & I can cash the M/O & put it in THEIR name & send it back OR resend them some more fish on ME. I know this isn't the same thing but I use to sell rabbits as a hobby thing I got into so I know a little bit about how treating customers comes hand in hand to sell to get things rolling as a word of mouth to get the word out to get your next sell & so on I have a SO SAY way of how I want this to go but it ALL depends on the way things go I know it's not going to be a OVER night thing with this it will take time so I'm in it not JUST for the money but more as a hobby to make some side cash from them as I grow. I appreciate all your info it was a BIG help to me along with all the other info I've gotten along the way so right now I'm just biding my time till things start really going in the tanks which is small & slow amount I don't have that many females haven't been in it that long, but I'm BUILDING on it little by little as they grow.
I am growing out java moss and etc a lot of plants which makes the most money fish was danios and sponge filter the moss grows in a 30g bucket outside and when the bucket is filled with plants I would have $300-600 in store credit ny lfs only pays in store credit and I will get a breeding setup for SSS+ grad CRS shrimp and subwassertang and another tank with rare show quality guppies which will generate $300 in 6 months and build up an empire the bucket tank verrryyyy low maintenance the sun is the best light source and bugs feed the fish algae feed fry
Considering all those things, return is not much great. Then, how to make a huge profit in breeding fish.Some aquarist doing this as a full time job and got a lot more profit.
I am so glad that I came across this video. I am planning a guppy rack and at some point a betta rack. The tanks I was planning for were just the breeding and trios and babies for those lines I would have. Something so simple as weeding out the "not so quality fish" was overlooked. I do believe you saved me some much unwanted hassle later by adding that for the extra tanks.
Depending on the demand for fish in your area, there may be a huge opportunity to fulfill that demand. Instead of getting whole sale prices for your stock, you maybe able to demand a premium by selling directly to the potential customers who are also 100 miles from a pet store. Advertising is cheap to free on the internet where you can target your potential customers. On the other hand, if you live in a sparsely populated area with potentially very few customers, then the odds of success will be harder. You will have to really work hard on the quality of your stock to entice customers to pay for said stock and shipping costs as opposed to the walking into their local pet shop... good luck

And if the aquarium racks cost you 1000 or 1100 i dont care either. But I want to know if it is on the 1000 mark or the 300 mark or the 2000.

what if there are no LFS within 100 miles if you only big box? they usually won’t buy from LFB’s
