For older Red Wings fans like me, he will always be known simply as "the Captain". Other Red Wings have worn the C, but Yzerman IS the C.

They’d have to one up:
End 42 year Cup drought
Be Captain for basically their whole career
Play their whole career in Detroit, in the cap era
Take a fraction of what your salary should be to facilitate a better team
Basically play on two bad knees
…and on and on

If there was ever a player that walked away from the game with nothing in the tank, it was The Captain. The man can barely skate these days and his knees are shot.

Not comparing Larkin to Yzerman, but Yzerman had tons and i mean TONS of doubters after his first decade in the league. Larkin seems to share that too because as of late im seeing lots of Larkin doubters too. Larkin isn't Yzerman, and no one will even come close.. but Larkin has bought into the defensive mindset and ALWAYS goes to the hard areas of the ice and does whatever it takes to win. Once we get some more talent coming up i have no doubt things will start to pay off.

I like Larkin but he’s not even close to Yzerman. Yes he plays a solid defensive game but he has put up no where near the amount of points that Yzerman did through the first 6 years of his career and Yzerman played on some awful teams early in his career just like Larkin.
@@wings193 Yzerman also played through his first few years in the 80s. That says it all right there. And did i not mention no one will come close to Yzerman?

And here we are. Nov 2022 and the Wings are blazing a trail. Husso is the anchor and quite a few players are performing really well.
The Illitch family considered him a son, a brother, and basically adopted him into the family.

Yzerman always putting the team above himself always makes me forget how good he really was. He's by far my favourite player, but I always forget how good his offense was early on. Just a captain through and through.

What a great time to grow up in metro Detroit. Yzerman was drafted when I was 6 and retired when I was 29. His presence defined that whole time period for all of us. Well done video.

My favorite nhl player of all time. There will never be another. Only he can get the wings back on track to stanley cups and you can see his plan coming together for the team. Can't wait to see whats gonna happen in the next few years for the wings its gonna be crazy.

I think of who was around them and the situations they were in.

That 95 Devils team was absolutely *not* a powerhouse at the time. In hindsight, the names make it seem that way but that was a franchise-shifting upset.
The defensive/gritty changes you mention when Bowman arrived didn't really happen until after the loss to the Devils. And Yzerman had an immediate buy in at that point.
The name 'Yzerman' means 'Ironman' in Dutch. His name was his destiny... 🦾😎

@@KetaProductions Yeah- it's crazy. 'Yzerman' is a Dutch surname. 'Yzer' is a corruption of 'ijzer'- 'iron', but has the same pronunciation and meaning. Could there be a more fitting name for him? Your fantastic tribute to him shows how deserving he is of this name. Thanks for the great work you do in bringing these incredible hockey legends to life. Steve Yzerman played a lot for team Canada at Worlds in late 80s ,because Red Wings were just not good at the time..He was my favourite Canadian growing up in communist Czechoslovakia ...He was always among top scorers and i learnt how to pronunciate his name being 10 years old back than 🙂 and later with Fedorov ,,,high flying Red Wings ...ohh my ....it was a good times ..finally winning the CUP in 1997 🙂

The Flyers physicality was neutralized by the Red Wings speed? Incorrect. The Wings had a team full of gritty, hardworking grinders and could match anyone in that area. Man, do you ever watch hockey?

Yeah it's crazy he gave away the opportunity to win multiple cups in Tampa to take on the project in Detroit. He's a Red Wing, through and through.
Beautiful tribute to Stevie Y, But Scotty Bowman deserves credit for Stevie becoming a two way player, To Stevie's credit though he gave up personal goals for the team, the team and winning the cup was all that mattered to him taking pay cuts to sign players and most notable so they could resign and match the contract the hurricanes offered. Fedorov that year would've been on the hurricanes who they beat for the cup

I was 12 when Stevie was drafted by the wings 😂 two yrs prior I was given a Gretzky hockey's stick signed from his rookie season, it had certificate and everything, my grandfather won it in a grocery store draw in Brantford where I'm from, played street hockey with it and chewed it up, I was dumb 😂
