    Today I'm checking out the Vox AC-15. I've tried the AC-4 and the AC-10, and I liked both, so this is promising. It comes with one Celestion Greenback, and isn't TOO pricey (although it's not cheap, even for a valve amp). We're in Brian May territory now.
    Hope you enjoy!

    Late comment I know, but one weird thing I noticed with the AC15 is that the channels interact with each other. So if you’re plugged into the normal channel and have top boost channel volume up (or vice-versa), that’s probably what’s causing the weird resonance and hiss you’re hearing. You’ll want the volume on the channel you’re not using to be rolled all the way off.

  • @roybenson955
    @roybenson955 2 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    Thank you for checking out my amp ! As you put more time on it, the harshness does go away. Also, my amp doesn't have the hiss that yours did. As for the set up, I only use the normal channel. I set the master volume way up, around 3/4, and control the overall volume with the channel volume. You get a much thicker sound when you're working the power tubes. Also, turn the volume on the top boost channel all the way up. Even though you're not using it, there's crosstalk between the two channels. The EQ section on the Top Boost will now affect the normal channel. You can get a lot of great tones by doing this.

    I believe one reason for reviews like this is they also tell us what the product DOESN’T have. Unlike the manufacturer. That’s important stuff. Thank you very much for this, professor. 👍🏻(By the way, I love VOX amps, so no hard feelings toward them, either.)

    The fender blues junior is the best selling 15 W valve amp on the planet and guess what? It doesn't have an effects loop! I've had my AC15 for about 15 months now, no rattles, no hisses, 100% reliable and the only downside I see against its competitors is its weight.

      @Grandslamwich It’s mostly being able to control your tone before touching your akp. You already know the amp sounds good clean and after that people just need to learn how to setup their pedals properly. That’s why people go through so many pedals never deciding on anything.

    I have used one for a couple years now, I plug in my pedal board to the normal channel only and do use a noise gate in the signal chain. Honestly sounds really good and can play at any volume. I do also highly recommend an eq pedal but I don’t miss the effects loop that I have on my other amps, still produces pristine reverbs and delays in front. Great video!

    What a coincidence! After more than 30 years of playing through Marshalls, I bought the big brother, the Vox AC30 S1 a few weeks ago. It does have a FX loop and costed me also €599 new. To me, that is ridiculously cheap for a valve amp
    Someone called it a Cheap Chinese Budget Amp, with only a top boost channel and a poorly Celestion VX12, the much despised copy of the 70/80...
    But, I like it!! I've only played it for a few weeks now, but it just totally changed my approach (and my pedal board) and I can simply link it through my EQ pedal to one of my Marshalls to have even more fun....

    I’ve always been a little confused about the hiss topic, I’ve never thought “what the hell?!” in a live setting because of minor guitar amp hiss that is never that prominent in a live mix. It’s rock & rock for God’s sake! A good studio engineer has no trouble working around that minor-moderate hiss which is mostly from single coil guitars of course. It would be great to do another quick demo with a HH guitar. I have a AC15-C2 which has truly glorious tones & It’s what I’ve been searching for, for decades (& I’m a bass player first) I’ve played with many guitarists using various high quality gear & VOX is by far one of the best ever. I could care less about the lack of an effects loop, (never used them) & my pedals sound killer straight into the AC12-C2. Thanks again Elmo!🤘🏼🎸🔥

    Had an AC15 CC1 since what 05 (ish). Played it loads after swapping the stock speaker to a Weber Alnico Blue (good exchange rates at the time). I also swapped in some JJ Tubes but in all honesty, none of that did more than change an already super amp. I would have been happy with stock everything but wanted to mod once (it's not something I usually do). Never had an issue and yes I can see why some want an effects loops, but I don't get past crunch with mine and don't care. Simple as amp that does loads........Biggish cab and sounds bigger and LOUDER than you might first expect. Anywhere where the headroom is not enough would have PAs anyway ...............My thoughts:) .........In fact I am in the market for a quality smaller valve unit.

    Hello Elmo, first of all, as always thanks you for the great review! After playing for more than 10 years and beeing away from it for the last 15 years, I decided to get back into playing right before the pandemic sh*t hit the fan! I live in Portugal now and most of my old amps and pedals are still in Brazil (and god knows when I'll be able to bring them here). Since january 2020 I've been playing with a Bias FX 2 - which was awesome btw - to take the rust away of my hands... But now I miss the feel of a real amp. I did a little research and I found three amps that really sparked my insterest, the Marshal DSL1HR Head + 12" speaker cabinet (you reviewed the combo), the Marshall Origin 20C combo (you reviewed the head) and the Harley Benton tube 15. Given that I'll most likely be only playing by myself and that I´ll be playing 60~70´s classic rock and blues, which of those three would you recommend as the starting point of building a new rig (to take pedals in the future and versatile enough to drive single coils, humbuckers, active pickups and etc for when I have all of my guitars back with me again)?

    • @MrPolevaulter
      @MrPolevaulter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Personally, I'd take the Tube15 out of those. You can easily upgrade the speaker in it, and it just sounds great. It takes pedals nicely too.

  • @GabrielNacu
    @GabrielNacu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice one Elmo!
    I also rely heavily on an effects loop in my amplifier ; all the tube amps I bought in the past HAD to have an effects loop (Blackstar, Marshall, Friedman, etc.) as I wanted to use the gain channels on those amplifiers with external reverb swells when I was gigging (it sounds terrible through the front).
    You'd be amazed how many modern "Boutique" amplifiers over £2000 (like Tone King, Carr, Swart, Morgan) DO NOT have an effects loop!
    I have demo'd so many of these great amps when I use to work in a guitar store, but I'd always get asked by customers why I chose a Friedman over the others.
    My answer "I fell in love with the Friedman - and it has an effects loop!"
    Loads of Love,
    Gabe

    No problems whatsoever with either of them. For a 7 yrold amp it's dead quiet and has no rattle and hiss.
    With a Treble Booster and a Crowther Hotcake it roars.
    An effects loop is unnecessary for this amp imo. It's all about old-school.
    That "fft fft fft" resonance problem you're hearing is a bad Greenback. They do that sometimes. Get an Alnico Blue.

    Great video, I have one of these and it is a finicky fucking amp. It is very picky about which overdrive you use coming to the noise output. Also the way you stack your petals in certain combinations makes a huge difference with the sound in the noise department. It’s the only amp I have to be this exact with keeping my peddles in a certain configuration, and I always have a noise gate last in line before going in to the amp. I pick mine up used, I do love the speaker and the sound when pushing it though especially with single coils. Great job Elmo! Cheers brother

    I think part of the reason that the AC15c1 does not have an insert loop because it already has tremolo and reverb built in. Your only supposed to put modulation pedals in an insert loop anyway. You always put drive pedals before the amp. Most agree chorus sounds pretty good before the amp too. So that really leaves delay as the issue. Frankly, even delay sounds good before the amp if your plugged into the normal clean channel. So while an insert would be nice its not a critical as one might think especially if your running the amp on the clean channel. Having said all that the AC15 probably should of have the same insert loop feature as the AC30 has given its price point.

    Ah VOX such a beautiful amp that sounds sooo good. But as a soundengineer I kinda hate them especially in small clubs because to get a good tone they needs to be driven kinda hard and then they are LOUD. I wished I could justify the high price but my wallet and my back screams NOOOO! These amps are heavy and if you go AC30 or AC50 you need a crew🤣 But the weight comes from all those big fat transformer that I believe is a hugh part of their great sound. Great review as always Elmo🤙 And a HUGE thanks for playing some juicy Brian May riffs.

    I just got a dream guitar, for me, I freggin love a Les Paul gold top, and hence, have always wanted a Gibson Les paul gold top with p-90’s, but they’re pricey, so I had been looking at the epiphone ‘56 with the gold top and the p-90’s, but had always had the issue of I have the money and can’t find one anywhere, or I can find them and play them, but am broke! Finally the time came where the universe aligned, and I was finally able to get one, and I absolutely love it! Playing and hearing it, they are a different animal for a Les Paul! The 90’s have some hiss, and him, but oooooohhhhhhh man, the tone! Now I’m looking for a better tube amp so I can get the right sound! How do you feel about p-90’s, and I know “a Marshall and a Les Paul…..” blah blah blah, I know they work well together, usually, do you have a recommendation for a different amp that would help accentuate the guitars nuances?

      @@PipeOPhile the sound is great! It’s got that single coil chime on the top end, but the heft when you need it! The saddest thing is; sweetwater won’t be getting anything from epiphone for months, however there is a store in Beltsville Maryland called Atomic Music, they have one that is brand new, as well as a blue model! The one that’s new is I believe roughly six hondo, and the blue is like four fifty! If your looking at them, want one, do yourself a favor! I love mine! Oddly enough I’m thinking of going and trying the Ernie ball .085 set! The nines feel great, but why not try something different right? I also top wrap, which makes a difference in the sustain of all Les pauls! But it is one of those guitars that make you want to not only play, but sound better!

    i am. Hey, great video tones and playing! :o) An amp tech could add the FX LOOP and true bypass though correct? 15:21 what overdrive? like an OCD clean boost? Boss SD-1? or what? i am.....
    ..................................................................................................................................................
    i play 8 string thrash metaLz and am looking at this amp and the DSL40c. However open to any suggestions. Amps i like are the randall and peavey solid state and tube amps, and the EVH 5150 III amp head for metal with my 6,7,8, string metal guitars. if i did get this amplifier, i would change the speaker use the overdrive you had on this thing, although your guitar is full of wooly tone i can tell. And i would add an FX loop. i could use a marshall DSL and not need to add an FX loop, although i wonder what the quality of FX loop it is. oh well anyway, i haven't had succes with marshalls for 8 string metaL without EQ and select speaker range. Although this amplifier shall be my quick carry unit. i shall put it in a box with two speakers not a single speaker, and be able to crank it more hopefully, well it does have a master so there is that. well thank you soo much for your review of this amplifier and assessment. i have played AC 30 with my 8 string and it has more potentiaL than other amps like the amps that do not work , i don't even like the boss katana, or line 6 anymore, and like the blackstar sound, although their hybrids and full digital do not keep up, and sound of trash on my 8 string. just saying, however the blackstar silverline sounded good and kept up, it was great in a line 6 kind of way although a little bit better and sounds voxy also,. Well thanks bye.

    Does sound much more muffled than my AC15. But I have an alnico speaker and upgraded tubes. Stock tubes often are quite bad in Vox amps unfortunately. I simply love the AC15. But for the classic Vox sound, you got to have an alnico speaker. Otherwise it leans towards a marshall sound I think, and that is WRONG 😅

      The greenback has so much clarity compared to many other speakers but when driven hard, it definetly *is* the marshall sound. I think it is geared more for high gain stuff while the alnico stuff should be better suited for cleaner tones.

    Cool review sir. Not my cup of tea I'm afraid. Back in the late 80s or early 90s I went to see Rush for about the 4th time and Rory Gallagher opened for them and I'd not heard of him at the time and he killed it and was using this beat up really old looking strat and about 200 of these amps it looked like. 🤣🤟 Man, he sounded great. There's a Beatles themed group here locally that uses these, but I think they use the 30 watt versions.
    I just like 5150 type amps and Soldano, and Plexis. Just my thing. The effects loop is important. Especially if using delay, etc. That thing would drive me nufs just because of the noise. For that amount of money which I think is about 725 or so dollars I could get a Marshall DSL 20 or even 40 and be much happier.
    Thanks man. Hope you and yours are well.
