Every P2K 4 axle loco, I have, I replace those gears, on ALL wheelsets,as a matter of course. They arent expensive, & they are really easy to do.Most of their 4 axle locos have the Athearn style, setup.Great locos, especially for their age.Cheers.
If I don't have replacement gears I do a hot water wash with Dawn dish soap. After the parts are dry. I take locktite super glue and regular sewing 🧵 thread. I used the thread to hold it closed while glue dries. Also to keep them from re cracking I sometimes put glue on thread to keep it from opening back up.
Delrin plastic ( POM) is too oily for any super glue to fix the gear permanently. Some have claimed usung the old baking soda mix trick to the superglue with some success. Personally I just replace them with NOS and you can still find A-Line #40005 as a sub replacement.
Exactly, that was what I thought. Check elite194's Channel. There are videos about fixing cracked gears. Look for "5 locomotives in 30 days parte 10 cracked and split axle repair"
@@Gfysimpletons , Ah I see. There are videos about gear repair on the elite194 Channel. That guy teaches lots of things about fixing locomotives, tracks and so on. Cheers !
I ruined two axels trying to get them set correctly!! I will try again tomorrow using your method. Thanks for the video!
Thank you for doing this video. It is a common problem and people should know about the fix.

If you use a nmra guave it helps and is easier to be sure it is in gauge. Thanks

Walthers does sell the axles with the axle already on it as a drop in for these locos.
What fun is that? 😃
Every P1K and P2K I ever owned had this problem as the plastic ages. EZ fix.
You might also use an NMRA wheel gauge.

yep thats it thanx thats my issue and i got it on ebay as new
chase up Athearn part # 40028 , and that is a complete axle ( six in a pack ) , that just drops straight in
You used be using a wheel guage when doing these
IF you don't have a Gauge handy use a piece of track sure better than guessing.
Where is the axel gear repair? This is a replacement.
