other Tokusatsu styled anime that i found: - Tekkaman and its spin-off Blade - Casshern and its remake Sins - Armored Police Metal Jack - Chouja Raideen - Brave Command Dagwon - Get Ride! AMDriver - Digimon Frontier (basically a Super Sentai Digimon) - Blassreiter (basically Kamen Rider set in Germany) - Sacred Seven - Scar-red Rider XechS (based on an Otome game) - Active Raid
Giant Robo: The Animation and GR: Giant Robo take elements of the 60's Toku of Giant Robo while taking elements of the GR manga and Mitsuteru Yokoyama's work
Active Raid was so good. Not only the suit designs were awesome and the overarching story was gripping, but the characters also have some of the best banters I've seen in anime
SSSS Gridman is great, and I hear the first Denkou Choujin Gridman anime, closely based off of the live-action, is good, too. I can't wait for SSSS DynaZenon!
quick correction, Viewtiful joe isnt really based on tokusatus, but actually tatsunoko heroes, specially casshan and Polymar(and you can basically see how his design is a mix of those 2). even his moves are technically "movie effect" based on them. as a side note, pretty much most of tatsunoko's stories can be seen as "tokusatsu-like", a better example would be Skull man, since its based on Ishinomori's original design for Kamen rider(and as a nod became Skull in W). similarly, the reason Super sentai has giant robots is 100% because of Go Nagai. so much so, that the idea of multiple heroes piloting diferent vehicles that change into a single giant robot came from the Getter Robo series(as a side note, he was also the main catalyst for the genre absurd success).
I love it when the tokusatsu fandom considers Precure to be a toku anime and how the Precure fandom accepts people from the toku fandom, it makes me very happy
Well Ishamori actually worked on toku, Tatsunoko and Go Nagai with their iconic classic superheroes and super robots only as so much as inspired them, though I believe live action shows and movies based on their work exist but were produced by other groups.
But yea between the times where they wore the influence on their sleeves like with Jetman, Kamen Rider Shin and Kamen Rider Amazons and Ultraman and Kamen Rider Mach, it's pretty obvious that these shows draw heavily from their works.
Transformers Choujin Master Force, Yusha Shirei Dagwon, Bubble Gum Crisis, Sun Red, Fuuto Tantei, Tiger and Bunny and Wingman are reccomended to watch it.
Technically speaking Digimon itself is also a "toku anime" especially Frontier season. But overall many earlier monsters have heavy tokusatsu based designs, it features monsters combining into giant robots to fight etc. too. My namesake Greymon is based on and is a reference Gomora from Ultraman. While Tyrannomon is a reference to the Godzilla, Stingmon is a Kamen Rider Ichigo reference, Justimon is a Riderman reference. Digimon Frontier as a whole is pretty much a Sentai show and in the end they become the giant robot and all that. (It should be also noted that Digimon is a really really early "isekai" anime as well.)
I will never forget the wave of emotions Samurai Flamenco brought with the "OH SNAP, this just got real", to the "OH SNAP, they went the cliche troupe route" Crazy show. Definitely will try to check out Red Sun, somewhere
Just wanted to let Marcos know - Kamen Rider Double has a manga sequel and it's just been greenlighted for anime summer 2022 (with dubbed version done by Funimation) - just heard this from TOEI official youtube channel.
My favorite anime is a magical girl show that's HEAVILY influenced by toku, and I think it's a shame that it wasn't mentioned in the video: Senki Zesshou Symphogear. It's about these magical girls that literally fight with the power of music. This means singing to transform, and also sing while fighting. Sounds ridiculous? That's because it is. Everything in this show is INCREDIBLY over-the-top and action heavy. From the characters, the fight/action sequences... It's so crazy that, acompanied with the amazing OST from both the voice actresses singing AND the instrumental BGM... It's almost impossible not to get hype. I seriously recommend this to anyone who wants some crazy fun.
Samurai Flamenco is an amazingly underrated show that deals with themes of superheroes and wish fulfilment in really interesting ways. The plot is kinda at all sorts of places at first but it makes sense if you see Samumenco as Masayoshi's journey of exploring their inner superhero / hero of justice by exploring the various levels or phases of (Japanese) superhero fiction. I also can't help but compare its escalating nature from episode 7 - 18, i.e. the peak of the show, to that of Gurren Lagann. After all both are love letters to decades of Japanese fiction either superheroes or giant robots, and the stakes keep getting raised as the show presses on. Hell, even the finale of Samumenco can be considered an escalation in the existential sense since it requires Masayoshi to face the supposedly repercussions of his superhero persona.
There are shows from the Trading-card game company Bushiroad that have multiple references to multiple different Toku-shows in them. There is, for one, "Future Card Buddyfight". This show is, to explain it quickly, a mix between Yu-Gi-Oh and Digimon were kids can get Monster-Partners (AKA "Buddys") from different worlds if they are lucky enough to pull a "Buddy-rare"-Card from a Booster-pack. The Monsters all come from different Dimensions/ worlds, all with a different theme. One of these is called "Hero-World" which has a Blue Flag with a Sentai-ranger helmet motif. The gimmick of those monsters is that, instead of just joining you in a battle, the inhabitants of this worlds can let their partner "Transform" into a Toku-Hero or pilote a Super-Robot and they have multiple characters from this world as main-stays in the show like: - Captain Answer, a Kamen Rider style super-hero who had retired on earth after a cataclysmic battle against a Demon called Yamigedo. He now lives in secret as a teacher and works at the school the main-characters attend. He also uses a deck centered around the "Triple Rangers Quartet-5", a Sentai team with a German number- and a teacher-motif. - Nobu and his Buddy "Shadow Hero Schwarz". Nobu is part of the so-called "Shadow heroes" who are supposed to be the rivals/ villians for all the heroes of Hero-world (Think characters like Shadow-Moon and Apollo-Geist) who came to earth in order to find Captain Answer during the events of the "Future Card Buddyfight: Hundred"-season. - Dash and his Buddy "Heroic Leader of the Ride-Changers, Winning Maximum". As you can propably tell, Winning Maximum is supposed to be Optimus Prime and the Ride-Changers are the Transformers. They even did a spoof in the Michael bay movies with him during one of the endings of I think the third season, and Winning Maximum even got similiar upgrades like Ginrai in Masterforce. - A new character that is debuting next week in "Future Card Buddyfight: ACE" who can transform into an Ultraman-style Toku hero. And those are just the (some) of the Hero world users and -cards that appear in the actuall TV-show. There are way more different Tokusatsu-inspired cards in the actuall card-game all based on different super-robot and Tokusatsu shows, inludings homages to many Metal-heroes, magical Girls and even shows like Megaman.EXE.
My only gripe is that you didn't elaborate further on Pretty Cure. You could have added a scene where one of the transformed girls punched a gigantic book across an open field of flowers from Go Princess, or when in Fresh the entire precures got so exhausted from both doing their double-life that they collapsed and spent an episode in a hospital. Or from the same anime, illustrate how evil the villains can get by showing an episode where the villains basically erased every Mother in the entire world. No, I'm not joking that happened.
Regarding the garo anime: 1. Seal of flames had a rough start but from the second half onwards it significantly better from that point on. 2. Crimson moon was an absolute waste of time and TITANIC waste of potential, and seimei's character was probably one of, if not the main reasons the show failed 3. Vanishing Line was damm near perfect- we returned to the modern day setting the fans love so much, we absolutely had the best cast in franchise as a whole (and I think the final villian may even be the same one from seal of flames- they did hint at it, not very subtly though)
DamashixGunpla DamashixGunpla here's the thing the animation in Crimson moon was fantastic and the idea of horrors based on Japanese folkore and a connecting famous Japanese folklore to the garoverse were great ideas, heck i still think the kaguya episode is one of the best moments in the franchise, problem was- that was the only episode to make their own take on a classic Japanese folktale
thank you for starting off with one of my favorite heroes of all time, , also joe says "the heavens call out for him, the earth calls out for him" anybody else notice the KR Stronger inspiration?
Daniel Teffera I know, right? It has a character development of a cocky kid into a grown-ass Makai Knight. Also, the movie is awesome. But yeah, we don't talk about Guren no Tsuki.
Hehe I feel the same. I loved seeing Léon's struggles even if a few scenes made me tear up and wish life would cut the kid some slack. Plus his dad was always funny to see.
I call Miniforce A Power Rangers/Toku fusion with Transformers Since it has well, the obvious Toku references, but the addition of the vehicles transforming into robots just remind me of Transformers, even though I think there's other shows with transforming robots, but yeah, mostly Transformers Also, there were other Transformers shows exclusive to Japan like Headmasters (a sequel series that replaced The Rebirth, and a prequel to Super-God Masterforce), Super-God's sequels, Victory and Zone, which was just an OVA, similar to Transformers Scramble City, which was a Transformers OVA that replaced the 1986 movie
The Super Robot Genre is essentially an anime version of Tokusatsu. I prefer the original Gatchaman over Crowds. I don't like Crowds. I prefer the Live Action Adaptation of Gatchaman over Crowds even though it's not very liked. There's also Tiger and Bunny, Hurricane Polymar, Casshan, the original Gatchaman trilogy, the anime adaptation of Ultraman, Blassreiter, other Magical Girl shows, Cyborg 009, The Skull-Man(the basis for Kamen Rider), Zettaman, SSSS Gridman, Tekkaman Blade plus Disney tried to do an animated version of Power Rangers. I want an anime version of Kamen Rider, Super Sentai and Metal Heroes (especially Metal Heroes)
You're saying a crappy live action adaptation is better Crowds? No no no, Ill take the cutesy moe aesthetic of Crowds, over the overly serious, overly dark, overly designed, gritty mess of the live action Gatchaman.
Even Marvel went Toku with Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers. Which makes sense since Iron Man and Kamen Rider are basically the same kind of hero especially when you see the inside of the rider helmets in 000, Ex-Aid and Build being like the inside of the Iron man helmet in the Avengers movies.
Speaking of giant robots, you could count Grendizer as anime toku as it features a main character who has a secret identity and transforms by shouting his alien name and pilots a giant. You could say it's a mix of Sentai, Ultraman and even Superman Speaking of Ultraman, you kept on referencing Kamen Rider and Sentai but no Ultraman reference? Especially since we do have Ultraman inspired anime like Astroganga
you guys do realise that its the other way around, right? the reason for super sentai to have giant robots is because of giant robot animes. and not only that, but Go Nagai's giant robots at that. also, side note, the reason Super Sentai wasnt canceled was because they based their series Jetman on Tatsunoko's insanely successfull Gatchaman(the original), and because of that, it became an instant hit revitalizing the genre.
viewtiful joe to me was the very media that inspired me, it started me on my style of heroics, this was a life changer for me, it was funny, heroic, based on a video game (one that i adored) Viewtiful Joe is my favorite
My god man, you added Brave beats? Well damn, because of that anime, i can not get their song out of my head, or even the disc of the anime out of my head(get it)
You have to check this one it's called Blassreiter. That anime will really give you Kamen Rider vibes, i'm not kidding. They can henshin, each blassreiter have cool motorcycle. they also have type of monster like grongi, undead and mirror monster. Also each Blassreiter sometimes fight against other Blassreiter. So you can say it's pretty much Kamen Rider.
Miraculous Ladybug is like tokusatsu anime and is somewhat like a cross between magical girl, Kamen Rider, and Super Sentai. You get your henshin hero trope, henshin phrases for Miraculous like "Tikki, Spots On!" or "Plagg, Claws On!", and your monster of the week. It's a good cartoon similar to anime but similar to Super Sentai like they introduced new heroes (spoilers!). I ask Marcosatsu for adding Miraculous Ladybug into another tokusatsu in anime video.
Maybe i have a short attention span but i haven't seen nobody mentioned: DOKKOIDA?! ( yes with exclamation and question mark ) Its a reference to Kamen Rider, a comedy manga and an anime adaptation exists. check it out.
What, no Hikaruon? I'd also have mentioned Iczer-1, it's rrrrreally an anime version of toku. And I dunno, I don't think Devilman Crybaby (or any Devilman) belongs in this video.
Concrete Revolutio is like full of tokusatsu reference~ It's not for everyone but if you don't mind on how the story being told (it's like kr Kiva) you should chek it out! I suggest to marathon it.
2:13 I know this is long, but Gotta watch this on Amazon Prime soon, along with Kamen Rider Zi-O, Shuriken Sentai NinNinger, Dobutsu Sentai Zyuohger, and Uchuu Sentai Kyuranger on my USB inserted on my Blu-Ray Player after finishing watching Kamen Rider Hibiki, Kamen Rider Decade, Kamen Rider W, Kamen Rider OOO, Kamen Rider Gaim, Kamen Rider Ghost, Imagin Anime, Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger, Mahou Sentai Magiranger, GoGo Sentai Boukenger, Tensou Sentai Goseiger, Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger, Ressha Sentai ToQger, Angry Birds Toons, Angry Birds Stella, Angry Birds Blues, Angry Birds BirLd Cup, Angry Birds Zero Gravity, Angry Birds On The Run (Season 1), and Angry Birds Slingshot Stories.
I'm surprised SSSS wasn't on this list. I watched the og Gridman and loved it. The anime is fun, albeit weird as animes tend to be. I'm still watching the spin off Dynazenon
thanks for adding brave beats to your list wish had more episodes (or a better ending not get me wrong was a good ending but giving the last anime had the same slot was also a dance anime wihtout the henshin or collectable of the week the fans of that show give brave beats no chance i had read the series finale was a middle season finish but thanks to the high bar the other dance anime left brave beats didnt have the chance to shine and show the diference)
you should have mentioned the US Powerpuff Girls cartoon since that cartoon DOES have a few tokusatsu references (even if people are like "noooooo!" to wanting to hear about it)
Master force isn´t the only japanese exclusive Transformers series. As for G1, before it came The Headmasters ignoring everything from the G1 Movie onwards, the mentioned Super God Masterforce , then Victory and the failed pilot for Zone. Other japanese exclusive ransformers series are Beast wars 2nd and Neo quasi sequels to Beast wars and Transformers Go Samurai and Shinobi spin-offs from the Prime series!

- Digimon Frontier (basically a Super Sentai Digimon)

Giant Robo: The Animation and GR: Giant Robo take elements of the 60's Toku of Giant Robo while taking elements of the GR manga and Mitsuteru Yokoyama's work
I never realized that about Digimon Frontier.
Casshern Sins is the shit! The man who kill the sun! Damn epic!
Active Raid was so good. Not only the suit designs were awesome and the overarching story was gripping, but the characters also have some of the best banters I've seen in anime

Miniforce isn't either.
"some anime with Cthulhu monster schoolgirls filled with Toku references" ....You must be referring to ICZER-1.

8:28 Ah, Cyborg 009, the proto-sentai.

As soon as you mentioned Witchblade I literally screamed. One of my favorite animes.
Is there any series like Precure but aimed at a male audience? The only one I know of is Symphogear, but that series is not really similar to Precure.
My favorite anime is a magical girl show that's HEAVILY influenced by toku, and I think it's a shame that it wasn't mentioned in the video:

There is a 6 episodes OVA series called Karas. Not a lot of ppl hear of it but it was really high quality and gory .
Forget to mention Skull-man somewhere, since it’s based off Shotaro Ishinomori’s one-off manga and had a one special episode featuring Hibiki’s actor
sadatmitsu destroyer anome is very toku
*_right madoka?_*
CrossTrash madoka is my favourite rider in Gaim
Awesome video and happy birthday to ya man!
Glad you included Guyver :D
My god man, you added Brave beats? Well damn, because of that anime, i can not get their song out of my head, or even the disc of the anime out of my head(get it)
You have to check this one it's called Blassreiter. That anime will really give you Kamen Rider vibes, i'm not kidding. They can henshin, each blassreiter have cool motorcycle. they also have type of monster like grongi, undead and mirror monster. Also each Blassreiter sometimes fight against other Blassreiter. So you can say it's pretty much Kamen Rider.
Since you include Transformers, please include the Brave series too later, one of the show is even have their own Sentai (Dagwon).
Powerpuff girls Z is basically sentai and sailor moon
Precure could meet anime style wizard and it would be hilarious if done correctly
Happy Birthday Marcos
I'm mad you didn't mention Miraculous Ladybug what the fuck
(I hope you will watch Kamen Teacher and make a quick review of it)
If we're going to put voltron on the list would you call the Netflix show Troll Hunters technically a toku show?
no tiger and bunny?
How come I didn't notice this first but guyver was my childhood anime.
Hands down best toku-inspired anime: Action Heroine Cheer Fruits 😁
How can you not love the first season of the Garo anime? It's so good. Are you sure you're not confusing it with the second season?
Miraculous Ladybug is like tokusatsu anime and is somewhat like a cross between magical girl, Kamen Rider, and Super Sentai. You get your henshin hero trope, henshin phrases for Miraculous like "Tikki, Spots On!" or "Plagg, Claws On!", and your monster of the week. It's a good cartoon similar to anime but similar to Super Sentai like they introduced new heroes (spoilers!). I ask Marcosatsu for adding Miraculous Ladybug into another tokusatsu in anime video.
Well zak storm look like inspired from Indonesian tokusatsu named Bima x so many similar thing k the series like a form change
Happy birthday Marcos
Maybe i have a short attention span but i haven't seen nobody mentioned: DOKKOIDA?! ( yes with exclamation and question mark ) Its a reference to Kamen Rider, a comedy manga and an anime adaptation exists. check it out.
What, no Hikaruon? I'd also have mentioned Iczer-1, it's rrrrreally an anime version of toku. And I dunno, I don't think Devilman Crybaby (or any Devilman) belongs in this video.
Oh What About Cybersix? Does anyone Remember that Show Growing Up?
thats not an anime though. it was made in America and it was based on a French comic book
2:18 The show i think of when i see inu brother from donbrothers
1:14 Ay Garo The Animation was actually really good lol
*3:04* that *happy エグゼイド™* tho lmao
Concrete Revolutio is like full of tokusatsu reference~ It's not for everyone but if you don't mind on how the story being told (it's like kr Kiva) you should chek it out! I suggest to marathon it.
Does anyone know what the background song is for the Guyver segment?
I'm surprised you guys didn't bring up Blassreiter. That was basically Gen Urobuchi's take on tokusatsu way before he ever did Gaim.
What about Special Duty Combat Unit Shinesman? It's hilarious
What about gatchaman
... It was brought up.
Crap damn it Indegestion
Wait miniforce is tokusatsu
Yeah
Megaman NT Warrior does become more like tokusatsu with LAN transforming into Cross Fusion Megaman.
There are also KR and Sentai references in Nyaruko. All I remember was a Faiz and W one. There may be more?
Wingman is an anime/manga about a toku fan boy
2:13 I know this is long, but Gotta watch this on Amazon Prime soon, along with Kamen Rider Zi-O, Shuriken Sentai NinNinger, Dobutsu Sentai Zyuohger, and Uchuu Sentai Kyuranger on my USB inserted on my Blu-Ray Player after finishing watching Kamen Rider Hibiki, Kamen Rider Decade, Kamen Rider W, Kamen Rider OOO, Kamen Rider Gaim, Kamen Rider Ghost, Imagin Anime, Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger, Mahou Sentai Magiranger, GoGo Sentai Boukenger, Tensou Sentai Goseiger, Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger, Ressha Sentai ToQger, Angry Birds Toons, Angry Birds Stella, Angry Birds Blues, Angry Birds BirLd Cup, Angry Birds Zero Gravity, Angry Birds On The Run (Season 1), and Angry Birds Slingshot Stories.
And now we have Fuuto pi or Fuuto tantei, whatever you like to called it based on kamen rider W
God I was hoping you'd talk about Sunred on this channel
I'd also recommend the Baoh OVA. It's based on the last manga written by Hirohiko Araki before he moved on to Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.
Did I hear you say Saint Seiya at the end
Because hot damn
I love Saint Seiya
FELIZ CUMPLEAÑOS MARCOS
So, Marcos... You've done Madoka. Any chance you'll cover Symphogear?
3:51 it's been 1 year man when will you talk about it
Samurai Flamenco is my favourite, especially the songs from it
Edit: Harakiri Sunshine and Red Axe in particular
you should have mentioned the US Powerpuff Girls cartoon since that cartoon DOES have a few tokusatsu references (even if people are like "noooooo!" to wanting to hear about it)
Master force isn´t the only japanese exclusive Transformers series. As for G1, before it came The Headmasters ignoring everything from the G1 Movie onwards, the mentioned Super God Masterforce , then Victory and the failed pilot for Zone. Other japanese exclusive ransformers series are Beast wars 2nd and Neo quasi sequels to Beast wars and Transformers Go Samurai and Shinobi spin-offs from the Prime series!
i now have a few shows to look up
I love how Mega man NT warrior is up there but they don't actually mention the Tokusatsu stuff about it
