At the 2024 Chicago Auto Show, Andre and Roman get hands-on with the revamped 'Highland' Tesla Model 3. While the automaker is still comfortably in the lead in terms of model sales, it's far from the only EV player in town these days. Rivals like the BMW i4 are gunning for Tesla, so does this new Model 3 do enough to maintain its dominance over the competition?

You whine too much, as if being an automotive journalist you shouldn't understand the whole price bubble with all cars, the immense benefit to the buyers that a company is, for once, REDUCING PRICES like, you know, computers have been doing for the last 40 years!

    • @justin9152

Because it decimates resale value for current owners of the cars. All cars lose value after leaving the lot, but if they drop by $30,000-$40,000 over the course of a few months like the Model S and Model X did in 2023, some buyers will be put-off by purchasing cars from that manufacture.

11:38 All cars depreciate heavily, my mom bought a 53k Cadillac for 17k, a 2 yr old car with 30k miles. You bought at peak prices, its good for consumers that prices are dropping. At least Tesla is not ultra greedy and trying to keep proces high like all other companies. You really don't give Tesla a fair shake, the only reason EVs are even a thing is because of Tesla and their supercharger network, without their charging network, EVs would not work for most people. I love my Y and the range is fine even on road trips in cold, but 99.999% of the time we aren't on road trips and just charge at home, its so much more convenient than gas cars.

@@justin9152 Not funny at all. Of course Tesla would raise prices when demand exceeded supply. Musk said the prices for Models Y and 3 were "embarrassingly high". When demand at that price fell off, well that's when Tesla began to cut prices, and they were ready for that. In the last year the average cost to produce a Tesla across all Models was down $3000 to $36,000. Incredible! They're still the only company outside BYD to make a profit on EVs. They will cut prices more to keep selling more cars. Tesla will soon have the next gen small Teslas starting a $25,000 with the innovative Modular Manufacturing System and that, with other innovations, will make them profitable too.

Wrong on all fronts. BMW had decided to not build single-use architectures for their EVs (the Mercedes strategy with the EQ line). Instead, at this stage of EV evolution they are using one architecture to support ALL powertrains. In doing so, it is less expensive to manufacture the EVs, BMW can produce the EVs on the same production line with petrol vehicles, and most importantly, BMW can adjust the mix of vehicles based on customer demand. Right now Mercedes is sitting on a boatload of EQs as demand has slowed dramatically as well as their equivalent petrol vehicles. MB now has two underperforming production lines (EV and Petrol) where BMW can optimize production on one.
BMW has stated as EVs continue to evolve they will decide what vehicles will be built on an EV exclusive architecture/facility. This will happen when BMW designs 3-4 EVs using a common architecture as they can cost justify a dedicated manufacturing site and architecture.

I once thought I wanted an EV with a 400 mile range. But as I continue to study the situation, I thought, that's kind of wasteful because you don't need it 95% of the time. I kept watching 70 mph range tests mostly done by Out-of-Spec, and I knew the Model Y had about 280 miles of range at 70 mph. I decided that was enough because of the reliable and ubiquitous Supercharger system. I've had my Model Y for 14 months now, and I couldn't be happier. I think about range about as much as I did in my gas cars. For daily drive you charge in your garage. Road trip, just put in your destination in the Navigation, and it tells where to stop and for how long. I've done 2 winter road trips, including one last winter where the temp got down to 12F. To the point it's almost like you are in your own world and forget how loud it is outside. My favorite thing is to have someone in my I4 and go 80 to 90 and they cannot see the speed and say: "How fast do you think we are going?". And it's always 20 to 30 MPH less than what I am doing. And the other thing is how responsive the car is. I can quickly get up to speed near almost any car with just barely increasing the accelerator. But it drives like it's on beams when cornering. I would easily rate this car near the top of any car I have ever owned. People drive it and it sells itself.

Any vehicle who clocks 60k miles on an EV in one year and most certainly purchased commercially will lose close to 50% cause of mileage, usage and out of warranty. Add the continuous manufacturing cost savings and you have a situation were new cars are close to par with used ones. My Tesla model Y Performance was 83,400$ CAD without options in 2020. The better 2024 version is 69,990 CAD. The depreciation will be based on todays price minus numbers of years, millage and warranty residual. I am considering extending the warranty by 2 years as proposed by Tesla when I sell it in 2025 cause I believe the 2025 Juniper will have a lot of Cybertruck components. 😊

What a bad comparison video. Instead of actually comparing hard facts like range, acceleration, features, safety, price, efficiency and so on you focused on how much value the new car loses. BMW has a battery pack of 110kwh but actually less range then the Model 3 LR with an 82kwh battery. So BMW is so inefficient it is almost embarrassing. That is by far the most important metric for electric cars. You will pay much more per mile for the BMW, so cost of ownership is quite a bit higher.
EVERY new car loses a ton of value in the beginning. But it also depends on the economy cycles. In 2020-2021, car makers could just not produce enough vehicles to meet demand due to supply chain issues. Therefore, prices hiked. Now, the opposite is the case, demand is low but capacity is high. Therefore, prices will be lowered. That is not the fault of a car company. If you buy a car to sell it a few years later, it is a dumb decision in the first place and it is just a fool's errant if you expect to get like 80% of the price you paid back.

On a miles/kwh basis, the Tesla Model 3 is 18.5% more efficient than the BMW i 4. This is still a big difference and would mean, you pay quite a bit more driving the i4 over the Model 3.

@@BogeyTheBear The EPA range NEVER represents what you can achieve in the real world. That is the case with every EV, not just Tesla. We just always hear about Tesla because there are like 50x as many Tesla EV's on the road than BMW EV's.
So saying that Tesla does not meet EPA range would either also mean that this is automatically also the case for other EV's (BMW as well) since they go through the exact same test cycle or it would say that you believe that the EPA agency only estimates Tesla's range higher and not other brands, implying some sort of conspiracy.
In short: EPA range being to high is not an issue about Tesla EV's, BMW EV's or any other brands EV's, but an issue with the EPA agency that does these tests. When you want to have realistic range numbers, just reduce the EPA estimation by 10% for summer and by 20-30% for winter. But you have to do it for all EV's, not just Tesla's.

    • @BogeyTheBear
