i completely understand, the constant back and forth in my head, torn. i know he loves me, he tells and shows it everyday, but knowing the history he had with her. i know he thinks about her still, even if he doesn’t want to. it’s exhausting and heartbreaking to just want to be there for him in everything, wanting nothing but his happiness, but also to know, that i might not truly be the source of that happiness. from someone in a similar position - one day at a time, cherish each other now, and hopefully in time we will learn not to try and live up to people no longer there.

yep been there done that, we were both on the rebound so there was never any falling in love, it was passing time in each others arms & then 25yrs later we had our 3 kids & now grandchildren. There was never a falling in love with each other, nor a falling out of love with the Xs, all i can say is the the feeling disappears & left with only a distant-fade-in-out memory...I believe It can work out with the right person who wants or needs help to move on. It's heart breaking so many girls with pure love for their men cry listening to this version because they are just glimpse of her.
It hurts so deep, I still remember every word he said about her. He said she was perfect for him, and yet he hadn't find any girl that would feel the same for him. But I was there. Listening to him. I remember he told me that I grabbed his attention only because I had some traits as she had. I remember he had over 500 of her photos in his phone, I told him to delete them, but he said they were too important for him. There wasn't a day, that I didn't think about it. I compared myself with her trying to be perfect for him. But I couldn't work it out.

Update: after listening to the original song few more times. I think I can understand him better. Maybe he thought he has moved on. Maybe he thought he’s ready for a new relationship. But sometimes things aren’t always as it seems. And just a glimpse of things that used to happen, might remind us of the past. When that happen, own it up, and let your current partner know. Falling out of love is as real as falling into one. It’s only natural.

Probably because some people have different way of dealing with their feelings.
There are some people who can deal the broke up by their own, settle their feeling neutral first to make sure they're already get rid of their past and ready for a new relationship. But there are also some people who longing for affection and love when they broke up, so they keep feeling lost and lonely, just like my friend's case.
I believe theres a lot of people who deal it like my friend, just the way joji expressed in his song. They had a perfect relationship with their former partner, but it's either they are too late to realise or the relationship was ended in a way they never wish/imagine. So theres this 'guilty' feeling left after the broke up, made them stuck into the memories of the past with thousands of 'if this was with them (the former lover).. will it be better?' 'i should've done this...' and etc.
Some people catch feelings easily when they're at their vulnerable times, mostly when they feel lonely.. so when suddenly theres someone come to their life and fulfill their "emptiness", they mistaken it as 'love'.
As much as i wanna slap my friend head when he told me about his 'joji' situation, but in the other hand, i can understand how some people are just not good at dealing and control their feeling and emotion.

Everyone in the comments is telling their stories so here’s mine. Growing up, I had a lot of issues with self-love and self esteem due to experiencing SA at a very very young age and as a result, I couldn’t let anyone in. No matter how hard I tried, everything in me would just shut down whenever someone was even semi romantic towards me. I started really working on my mental health when I was 18 and then at 20 years old I was able to start seeing this guy who became my first everything and it took so much for me to even talk to him due to the trauma I was still dealing with. The only problem was, he wasn’t over his ex. I still remember when he told me that she was the girl he thought he was gonna marry. I thought it would be okay because I was young and naïve and I figured she cheated on him in such a horrible way that I could be what he needed and it would all work out. Plus, she’s a diagnosed sociopath and an overall horrible, toxic person. Well, needless to say, I got a few nasty messages from her when she found out about me and she called me an ugly cow among other things. He ended up going back to her and then coming back to me after a month when he realized he messed up. I tried to make it work, I did everything to make him happy and be there for him and help him with whatever he was going through but you can’t be there for someone who doesn’t want help. He let himself go further into his depression and I had to step away for both our sakes. He texted me a few months later telling me he was sorry and he was depressed and gained all this weight and I told him he needs to focus on his own mental health to move forward. I felt destroyed and wondered if I could love again. I cried for weeks replaying everything in my head wondering what I did wrong and reminding myself that I didn’t do anything wrong. A month later, I met the love of my life who treats me like a queen and who I can be unapologetically myself around and it only makes him fall further in love with me. We live together now and nothing would make me happier than watching our hair turn gray as we grow older with only eyes for each other and the family we’ll create. I’m grateful for my ex because he taught me who I am in a relationship and what I need from a partner. He also made it easier for me to work with my trauma when I did get into a healthy relationship. Without him, I might’ve never met the love of my life. I just want to say to anyone going through it right now, trust the process. Life is about yin and yang. If you’re in a low place right now, trust that it will give you the momentum you need to shoot for a high place. Give it time, you will heal and you WILL find the love you deserve. ❤

This makes me think of moms for some reason, imagine you have a new mother due to unfortunate reasons and she’s struggling to try to raise you but all you can think about is how your mom knew everything you loved and you didn’t know how important those details were until she was gone. I know the song is catered for a lover but my mind just trailed off to a different perspective.

My husband lost (she got hit by a distacted driver) his best friend in 2017 and for 2 years straight he'd tell me.how he should have kissed her and told her how much he loved her and how perfect she was. She's a goddess in his eyes and I constantly find myself trying to fill that spot till I found that that'll never happen. I'm not her and I'm not as kind or as capable or outgoing as her. It took a while to get over but somehow it's still in the back of my mind after 5 years. It's not his fault or anything, he was still grieving but it def put a dent in us for a while.

People say and think a lot of things while grieving. Especially when it happened in a really sensitive time of his life. Honestly I wrote this when I was stuck alone in a house a country away from my family with nothing else to do but think lolol. In the end, Yes he really cared about her, but I'm the one he married. Since I wrote this, we went through a lot of issues together and it's really shown me how much he loves me for who I am. Not because he sees things he saw in her, in me. My eyes especially got opened when the mother of the friend he lost sat us down and talked to us about it. I'm very appreciative of her family for really understanding where these emotions were coming from and helping us when she really didn't have to without anyone asking. It's definitely a little bit of a unique situation to be in.

I find this so much more heartbreaking. While I understand what the original lyrics were conveying and expressing, and I know just how painful it must be for the Guy to try and move on when all he sees is his Ex in his current Girlfriend because he thought he was ready to move on when he wasn't-
I think that being on the other end of where you're in the place of the Girlfriend and where you'd realize that you'll never have the Guy look at you the same way he did with his Ex, hurts on a lot more levels.
Imagine you realize that you're technically being used just as a way of distraction from the Guy's past, that you're constantly being compared to the Ex, that no matter what you try to do to be better it would just never work? Yet you love the Guy regardless so you wouldn't know how to deal with the situation. It'd be a lot more difficult, at least to me. Of course, as the current Girlfriend you should still just strive to do the best you could and not blame yourself for it, but it's hard in times like those.

‘you’re not fine and you never moved on’ hurts me so bad how this version expresses my exact feelings rn. asked him multiple times bfr we got together if he has fully moved on with his ex and he was 100% sure that he has. the day he decided to end things with me, he told me that all the memories we created, he thought of his ex. was so happy to have him in my life, he was my greatest god send. maybe we’re just not made for each other bcs he still can’t forget about his ex. she’s probably much better than me, although he said that i’m perfectly perfect for him. he left without discussing with me, never had a single argument throughout our relationship. i had the best moment in my life whenever i’m with him, but if letting him go is the best decision for him, then so it be. i promised that i will always pray for his happiness and i’ll never stop doing so. i miss him everyday and i haven’t moved on yet. i’ll get through this soon :)

Hearing the original song made my raging heart ache a lot, this made me feel okay to leave him and let him find the girl who had played with his heart. I tried my best to make him feel loved though.. I guess I was just his therapist or something.
Surprisingly, I moved faster than I thought. Maybe because I knew from the beginning that he didn't actually love me, yet I still gave him a chance to be a new person. I just hate people who start new relationships without first focusing on moving on. It's like betrayal when you leave them after. I hope he finds someone more deserving than her.

I heard the “main version “ , “her version “ and now this “current gf version”.. but from all of them this current gf version breaks my heart . just imagine that HIM OR HER can’t get over from their past but what was the fault of that person that they choose to get a glimpse of their ex’s …. I just recently found your original cover and this Current GF's POV. This really relates to me when I switch the gender of the current's POV. I really can't cry, but I really feel the hidden pain and the bitter-sweet melancholia from this song. I keep on repeating this exact POV's cover while questioning my past decision to let go of her so she can go to him again. It's hurt, but yeah, maybe it's the best I can do to make her genuinely happy.

I know I’ll never be her, I won’t ever replace the memories they have together. But god it’s frustrating knowing that he constantly thinks about her, how he misses her touch, he misses her smile. He constantly says how perfect, how amazing, how caring you are yet it won’t be enough. It never feels like it will be enough to make him forget about her for just a second when you’re with him. It hurts, I just wish he took my feelings into consideration as the relationship is perfect aside from his lingering past relationship with her, and now a new friendship between them.
