  • This video shows step by step how I made a wooden burnishing tool on the lathe. I'm not a leather worker but this was a request from my cobbler friend Juan.
We attached the tool to a 3/4 HP 8" harbor freight bench grinder.
The blank is three pieces of 1" thick bigleaf maple and about 10" long. Then jointed to square two edges and run it through the table saw at 3 3/4" square. Cut the ends on the compound miter saw for a blank ready to be lathe turned.
The holes drilled with forstner bits and one drill bit in this order.
    3/4" forsnter.
    5/8" forstner
    1/2" drill bit for threads.
Make sure you measure the tool to know how deep to drill each step.
Music is me playing on the guitar. G Maj, C maj,

May I suggest that you turn a few more troughs separate from the burnishing section specifically for bees wax. So you don't contaminate either section. Wax is always good to finish off the edges of leather for waterproofing. Only a suggestion.

I don't think you want to ever be wearing gloves when using a lathe or drill press. If the glove gets caught it will pull your finger and hand into the tool faster than you can react. Please consider looking up this safety advice for yourself!

Wearing gloves is ok. You know how videos of stunts play a disclaimer "acts performed by professionals, please do not attempt at home"

@@ian-baldwin-woodworking no, wearing gloves while turning or using a drill press or hand drill is unwise and bad advice. The long throat on your burnisher just adds extra momentum and weight that will cause unneeded wear on the bearings of the buffer motor, because physics.

Lol these things are designed for use like this, because, engineering. The weight of the wood is was less than the force applied when doing buffing.

Always listen to a man named Walter. Walter’s know things. Of course I’ll wear them too but with the knowledge one day they may just get grabbed lol. We all get got sooner or later. My shining moments were drilling into the palm of my hand in a hurry, and the classic angle grinder t shirt tail grab winding up to my chest. Man those things grab fast!
