- Training Minutes: Leigh Hollins demonstrates a prop used to teach firefighters good air management practices and mask confidence.
These videos are for training demonstration purposes only. When you perform these techniques at emergency scenes and evolutions, be sure to wear full PPE and adhere to your agency's procedures and policies.
This video originally ran on the Fire Engineering site in 2011.
Wow this is way more than my training. I was in a blacked out room full of smoke. Had to crawl in a smoke filled room and locate victim. Drag out dumby while keeping c spine, cannot stand, while co is cursing, yelling and pushing me over. When i came out he asked was that fun and i said i wanted to kick his ass. He laughed so hard. Good times
Thanks for this!! I’m currently going through 16/64 class and I’m having so much trouble with this very thing. I did not know I was claustrophobic until I tried to do a maze
Me too. Something i never thought
I had the same issue in my academy - it was very similar to this video and id never had an issue with claustrophobia until this. The BEST advice I can give is, when you start to get anxiety - SLOW. DOWN. You'd be shocked how big a part your breathing is.
Also: if you're squeezing through a particularly tight spot, take a big(controlled),deep breath and then make your move on the exhale. Whatever you do, DON'T panic. Better to take 5-10 seconds to center yourself than blow through 800 psi panting
This looks much harder than ours. I’ll be doing I tomorrow for the first time in full turnouts. Those wires would have been hell, great job
instructor had me ready to barf at "it might be too tight"
Yeah, those wires looked a little too small for that guy to get through.
Awesome job!!
Did this today in fire school ,it’s a hell of a lot different doing it in person ,but here i am now, made it through
Congratulations, brother. Toughest part of the academy IMO
wait....so there's someone else going through that backwards to film him?!
Yeah but no gear so that makes a big difference
Also they aren't blindfolded
Probably a drone
Like the guy said, there’s many hatch doors they have to see access the rookies if they need help. They were most likely using the hatch doors to watch
Fantastic great job
this video is not for instructional purposes. we are simply providing the firefighters enrichment
As Bomb Squad Commander foe my police department, I had our techs go through this training at our city’s fire department training center. Although we all completed the training, it definitely was NOT something I enjoyed. And I was the one who set the damn trading up. About 5 minutes into the exercise, I was thinking: WTF did I get myself into! Much respect for our firefighters who do this!
I have to do this next week I’m a bit worried cuz I’m a bigger dude but if he can do it I can too.
Just did mine today.. how was yours?
@@LFPMultimedia it wasn’t as bad as I thought. I had to tel myself while I was in there that I was gonna be okay. And just remember why I’m doing this.
The guy in this video was big too. I hear it’s all about closing your eyes and just breath
@@ronthemogul It's all about remembering that it's a maze that is designed for you to get out. I'm a big guy too, and I always hated doing these mazes.
What is the width of some of those tighter areas. It looks small!
It aumlates some of the conditions we have to deal with in real fires
I would like to know how he keeps from panicking. Great Job!!
You just focus on making the next move. Remind yourself that the situation depends on you, and that you have to stay calm and keep focused. One step at a time.
We just got done with our maze test today and it was shorter but they turned our air off and we had to figure out if it was a regulator or cylinder problem
hi Blue
@@brendonbackus1297 what’s up backus lol
I might be getting a little cocky here and I might regret saying this when im in academy but... Man if you can get up on your hands and knees, its not very tight of a space. Not saying this is a cakewalk but I highly doubt ill get claustrophobic in there.
Just wait, young blood 🤣
@@gingeranagram2467 I mean maybe if my SCBA is running low on air it'll feel a lot tighter
Now watch the video of the boy who died in the Utah cave incident trapped until his heart exploded ☹️
Noooo. Means nothing when someone is coaching you along the way, sorry
Confidence builder first round. They probably throw you back in a different way without help
Might be his first go at it?
Not always. But your way of thinking of “figure it out 110% of the time” is what’s killed firefighters for over 12 recorded decades.
But yeah. It works wayyyy better.
@@dallasdempsey7097 No kidding...150 years of tradition unimpeded by progress. There is no reason to just dump someone into a confidence course like this without building up skills first.
