after rereading the events, he is still kind of an asshole. and throughout most of the trilogy, he is really pathetic. which i think makes him stand out compared to a lot of other characters that dont share the same depth. especially during the kazimierz trilogy where every playable op is good and motivated, mlynar just sticks out as this ball of gloom. him being pathetic is what i think makes him so intriguing.

I called it as soon as I saw it. His assholery was firmly in the territory of wanting Maria out of Kazimirez, and he never wavered on that. The biggest thing later events revealed is what exactly Mylnar would do once he was sure Maria was away from the influence of Kazimirez. And his absolute certainty of it means that every waking second bowing to investors was him wanting to go out and search.

Well, i kinda agree with Mlynar at some points. He tried to keep his nieses as far away from trouble (and Kazmirez especially) as humanely possible. Sure, he was kinda supressing them, but then Margaret decided to make her "grand" return to the arena, what does she get? Full assassination operation against her and her sister, and that was only stopped, because assassins were afraid of the Uncle. And what exactly does it changed, when she won the tournament? Nothing at all. Mlynar knew, that his country is already lost to all this corruption.
he isnt exactly right, just understandable. while they did get into danger, both maria and margaret really care about kazimierz. margaret definitely knew what she was getting into once she got back. maria maybe less so. still, they chose to fight. to someone like margaret, there is sill hope for kazimierz. for mlynar, there isnt. that is the big difference between them.
@@DwellerNine if all the people of Kazimierz are like him especially those who able to do something then it's all lost cause. it might take decades for it to change and someone big has to start the first step so other can continue it
Margaret never gets focus because what she is is already established. She's not stronger than Mylnar. She's not wiser, not more moral. Her point to Mylnar is that things will be different this time because more people will raise their hands to fight for what's right. And that is what ties back to the main themes of Arknights. Mylnar is a knight who has given up the honor and glory of knighthood. He would throw away his title, abandon his pride, but what he would not forsake was the Nearl children. And that's simply not a knightly thing to do. So he rightfully gave up any claim of respect from the public. Even his plans after Nearl Light are entirely selfish: find his family. Even after all this time, even with how much kazimirez could use someone like him, he would rather chase after the motes of light that he cherishes. Mylnar is a knight in body, in mind, in skill. But emotionally, he doesn't feel he deserves the title. He wielded the sword for selfish purposes, and so restricted his arts ONLY for those selfish purposes, protecting the Nearls, until Obscure Wanderer made him bend his rules a bit.
throughout the event, its very clear that he isnt exactly the hero that he "used" to be. in fact, he probably never was. a hero to some, but not all. he is surprisingly radical, and way too stubborn for his own good. throughout his years, there was a lot he could have done. he could have gotten in the major, which would not only help his family, but also establish him as an important knight of kazimierz, which would have lots of benefits, and could have gotten him into politics. he doesnt do that though, due to his own selfish ideals. for the longest time, he just talked, but didnt actually do anything. there is a real chance that he could have saved czcibor's lover, but he didnt. he both hates the system, and is subservient to it. unbrilliant glory describes him well. in short, he is a great character.
@@thenoobjesus3102 yeah, Mlynar is perhaps a great example of a jaded AF character. Guy used to be bright and knightly, but the loss of the 2 people he cherished and the crumbling of the system he knew from uber capitalist corporates broke his perspective of the world, sending him to a downward spiral of hopelessness and cynicism. Guy could have done a number of good things, like becoming the Nearl Primus or helping his friend's lover, but instead he chose not to do any of that and kept on working as a miserable office worker. All the while arrogantly stating that ideals mean nothing and are futile (yet still maintaining a strict standard of knighthood for those proclaiming to be knights). But despite all that cynicism that nothing can change for the better, deep down he still cares enough for the wellbeing of his nieces (albeit in his douche way) to fight for them if needed. At this point, the only way we can get this uncle to remove that huge stick of cynicism in his butt is for him to be able to find the whereabouts of his brother and sister-in-law, as well as seeing Margaret making tangible change to Kazimierz for the better
@@thenoobjesus3102while i agree with most of your points mlynar could not have gotten into the major and win it without risking the nearl family. Yes, personally he wouldnt have wanted to, buts its all too easy for anyone to hire armorless union to attack whislash or his nieces. Especially since hes met and faced off with a darksteel before so they know hes a threat. Margarets first victory exemplifies why it wouldnt be possible. No one liked how she won without any backings or sponsorship and the threat got so big that her grandpa sent her away under the guise of it turns out she was infected the whole time. Likely, the same thing would have happened to mlynar. Mlynar swallowing his pride and laying low is why they let the nearl family be. Because he and by extension they arent a threat anymore. Personally i believe if he could he would. Hed swallow his pride even further. However i can believe it that he wouldve stubbornly cling to his ideals and refused to join even if it meant no repercussions
@@myllosand5538 perfectly said. Also throwing my two cents in from what i can infer so far (barring whatever happens in Obscure Wanderer as i haven't read up on that yet, just the first and second Nearl events). I kinda doubt that, even if Mlynar became champion through some way, it'll change anything much in Kazimierz. The KGCC runs supreme in the place and they're trying their best to take power away from the knights (if not outright crush their standing if the phonecall scene from the end of Nearl Light is to go by) , not to mention the entire thing with the major and how now it's used as entertainment rather than what it used to be in the past. Also there's whatever happened with the Adeptus... Organization, I'm not even gonna attempt naming them, and how it's hinted that they're corrupt in some way (cmiiw tho, it's been a while). I honestly can't really blame him for getting so jaded and disillusioned by knighthood. There's far too many things standing against him and his family. Going to the major is only going to exacerbate the problem and put his nieces and Zofia ever more at risk for a payoff that might not even happen. So i get him being an asshole towards both Maria and Margaret, it feels overprotective and (to me) justifiably so considering they're what's left of his direct family.
I'm so glad they gave Mlynar the same VA as Forchenault Levellieur. Both are equally disliked by the fanbase at some level, but looking into their lore they're also very human.
He's literally number 2 in terms of popularity in the latest CN poll, only to be topped by Skadi (obviously). Man's the most thirsted male character thirsted by the fanbase, followed by Chong Yue
For me as a Polish person, Młynar also represents certain depression of our culture. Knighthood, our warrior culture, nobility becomes comercialised just like Kazimierz Knights. In a sence Młynar is Kazimierz personified, or rather its past and present. Gloomy, dark and brooding about lost past. But still able to shine in the night. Especially its true if you read his trust notes, he sees victory as meaningless in itself, and that the Knight's of todays era should embrace the glory of deafet for the righteous cause, against overwhelming odds. Honestly I could talk at least for an hour about the Kazimierz and Polish culture in the face of capitalism and how much it hurts to watch, becouse its true. Capitalism gives us affordable housing and food. But it makes commodity out of ideas.
Very happy to see another Lore Diver. AK just has an unbelievably undescribeable amount of writing put into just optional text contents largely unrelated to the Tower Defense game, and Mlynar here who got a pinch of cameo in one event and a dedicated tiny Intermezzo story event is already very lucky compared to other ops, yet so mesmerizing with how much is conveyed with such little material and opportunity. Just recently read about Mulberry's "Tiny courageous lil girl" story, Hibiscus Alter's Bitter Sweet yet Satisfying growth arc, Cantabile's PTSD-ridden hopeful "Turning a new leaf" journey, and it's all just from Operator Records and Module Descriptions. All I'm saying is am happy to see another fellow immersing deeply and meaningfully into Arknights optional worldbuilding!
One thing id point out is the reason the tournament knights suck so much is because there basically payed actors that constantly rigge matches for entertainemt if i remember right the whole reason maria won against the spear guy in black armour was because the sponsors told him to Also platinum was sacred by the campaign knights and didn't want to fight them while she had no worries about Fighting any of the tournament knights
Honestly, the part that i dont like bout the nearl story is how Margareth never actually solves anything or grows, the story says she really important, but she herself never managed much. The bloodknight was the one that actually granted a chance for the infected The pinus silvestris and others in the background are the ones that try to solve the issues happening around. Margareth mostly says platitudes and then her problems get solved by a lot of more powerfull people. And even after the event, all those momments she had, they did not amount to that much, she keeps saying that she is inspiring the people, but she actually being supported by some of the most powerfull people in the system, some of the responsible for so many of the problems in kazimiers . The bloodknight was the thing margareth could never be, he is a symbol that actually brought change, and he kept fighting for change I hope a next event would actually let her do something.
for this video, i tried really hard to not talk about how badly her character was handled, but i still mentioned because i couldnt help myself. everyone is more interesting than her. her proving mlynar wrong was the only part of this video that i couldnt hype up well. not because mlynar was right, but because her wins always felt lackluster. that is the only stain that i can think of in regards to mlynar's development. if margaret had been a more interesting character, mlynar's story would have been much better. or maybe there is just something im missing about margaret's character, idk.
The part about the Khagan seemed off to me, and I was right. The Pegasi were the ones who actually managed to drive off the Nightzmora, and defend their territory, and this was the RISE of the Knighthood orders and the Pegasus monarchy, not the fall, which happened only around 100 years before and was just simply an economic matter in the vein of the renaissance with the merchant class and retainers rising against the nobility, and unrelated to the Nightzmora that happened around a millennium before.
Amazing video - thank you for explaining all of this. The way AK presents its story is often so drawn out, that I rarely end up reading it. Videos like yours make it so much more accessible.
I think you fumbled the "The Rise" part of Mlynar story a bit. He grew up during the time when Kazimierz was rapidly over taken by radical capitalism and consumerism. He grew up on stories about the knighthood and his family feats, which formed his views and beliefs but they clashed with the reality of modern radically capitalistic Kazimierz. They turned all of his beliefs and family feats into an obnoxiously pretty, but hollow shell, a product to sell and easily consume. Moreover iirc the story directly mentions couple of times he doesn't and never had an official knight title, he refused to get it, because by the time he was old enough, it lost all meaning, now "knight" meant nothing more than Kazimierz tournament fighter, which he promptly despised. There's also one other point, he mostly started travelling the outskirts of Kazimierz mostly when his brother went missing, not before. I suppose there was some travel before, but he truly started wandering looking for the clues about his brother.
the "knighthood" he worships, and the knighthood that exists in kazimierz are different. while he was never an "official" knight, he was the kind of knight he wanted to be. while they are the same word, mlynars view on knighthood is completely different from kazimierz's. he was living a decent life until his brother disappeared. after that, it was a downwards spiral. and im pretty sure that he did go around at the same time as his brother as well, because toland and co knew his brother. i might be misremembering though.
interesting that this character can warrant this much lore discussion. I heard arknights had a bustling amount of profound designs and worldbuilding, but riddled with issues in story writing, limited by the gacha medium.
not every character is like this. for example. i dont know how i would go about making a margaret video. because surprisingly, there isnt much there. some characters are just built different i guess.
Arknights is basically a series of Chinese visual novels in different genres (there’s cosmic horror, wuxia, mafia, etc. episodes) in a thin tower defense gacha shell. I really don’t think the gacha holds it back since you get 50+ free units, it’s mostly just janky translated early chapters before it finds its feet.
@@RainywallaRoo the only thing that the 'gacha' aspect hold it back imo is the freedom for the authors. we have one of the biggest playable character roster in recent gachas currently that didn't include alter, and ofc with gacha you have to be careful with the playable. they can't be too evil or more a** than Mlynar maybe can't be on the opposing side (i hope AK might be diff), and ofc you can't kill them or maimed them that easily. aside from that there's nothing else that could be detrimental really, the story pace progress a lot in just 5 yrs tackling all kind of storyline. and the model is by far my favorite, exploring the world by different POV and 'mc' at the same time unlike where you just have one or two focuses that visiting each part of the world one by one like a tour or something
A lot of it is getting value out of the worldbuilding. Mlynar gets a lot of characterization just from his reaction to an established world, with rules and such that were build around Margaret's actions. Margaret suffers a bit in character development because she's in too many different plotlines at once. She's on the frontline in Chernobog, for example, while also part of the Followers, and then has her own arc or two with Kazimierz. It's the same problem Skadi has; she's repeatedly a character in events that really make other people more interesting. Mlynar's themes are more straightforward and consistent because he only shows up when it's important to his character. Margaret and Skadi simultaneously get too much exposure without much chance for actual development. Ch'en suffers from this as well, often being a major character in a story that's ultimately about someone else.
I just got recently to arknights but Silverash and Mlynar absolute my faves. Your videos have intersting insights as well the humor in between is glorious. Looking forward to more of your work!🎉
Little note that never got mentioned but Mlynar shows up in a 4th event, at the very end of Zwillingsturme. Which is because Viviana found a spear with the Nearl family crest in the Witch King's pocket dimension. He has a grand total of 2 lines, but the way he's talking feels like he's much less apathetic due to the news.
When you are tired learn to rest, not to quit. Mlynar was just resting his soul until he picked up his sword again and kills a boss solo making me sad because I don't have him and have to use a friend unit instead.
Thank you for actually trying to pronounce Polish names - it was actually good. Hoping for more AK videos, I love the story and world of the game, but don't really have the time to read through it. This format on the other hand is perfect to turn on in background while working.

Finally got around to finishing this, good video. Part of what is curious about Mlynar's conflict with Margaret is his view of the nature of knighthood, and I wonder what if anything is lost in translation. There's an element of Mlynar feeling that if the knights cannot save the common people from the corruption of Kazimierz, what's the point, while Margaret is more concerned with inspiring the people to save themselves from it. There's a weird dichotomy of martial virtue opposed to civic virtue, and it's certainly undercooked in the English writing.
from what i have seen, chinese media has plot points and stories that you dont really see in the west. they just have lived with wildly different questions for philosophy. most stories in the west take inspiration from greek/other old western nations works/mythos. there are exceptions(like lovecraft and other more modern writers from europe), but most follow "greek-like" formats. china, being china, has always been pretty isolated. sure, it has connections to other nations, but for the most part, its been by itself. which is why western themes havent really influenced chinese themes too much, and vice versa. if western philosophies came from one sapling, chinese ones came from a different one. so i wouldnt be surprised if a lot of themes in arknights get lost in translation, because the way the chinese tell stories, and themes they tackle are things that the west isnt overly familiar with. but who knows, maybe im just rambling, and im totally wrong, idk.
@@thenoobjesus3102 Agreed. I think the biggest example is A Death in Chunfen (the Qiubai event) which presents and discusses a lot of Confucianist elements, but the general discussions I've seen of the event have completely overlooked that.

Hi, I'm a certified Mlynar expert. My credentials include writing a majority of english language (mlynar/toland) fics on ao3. I am writing this as I watch after I was delighted to see this in my recs. (Historians will say they were very good friends.) I've spent a LOT of time examining the arknights timeline to get years and concepts of how old Mlynar is and his and Schnitz's involvements with the wars in Ursus and Leithania that the family was involved in. All I can say is I wish I could help, man. I have nothing on this. Something to note about his relationship with Czcibor is that he read and ignored the letter approximately around the point in the timeline that Kirill Nearl would have just died, leaving him as sole guardian of the young Maria Nearl in a famously trigger happy with the assassins political environment. I think the story plays this as part of his apathy at that time, which is partly true, but his actions as always make a lot of sense when /he's/ not the one narrating them. If you listen to the things he says you've already lost at characterizing him. It's why I think his conversations with Toland are so entertaining. They're always talking past each other to hit each other's "true self" behind the politically necessary faces they wear. Mlynar has been prescribed antidepressants for years by the time of Near Light. Zofia comments on it. I always think that's a great detail for how his mental state is. Also I really liked the Elden Ring jokes. I bought and tried to play Elden Ring because of all the memes about my favorite character's EN VA...I'm not very good at elden ring. >_>
Hi! Watched the whole video and very much enjoyed it, might I ask the list of music used in here? I swear I have more profound thoughts but off the top of my head it's bugging me
Sorry in advance but the comment writings throughout the vid is so annoying to me It's annoying to me because I'm easily entertained so i like the story but I'm also easily get influenced so i kinda begging in my mind like "pls don't make me hate the story just because i listen to you". All in all it's a me problem but I'll whine regardless Thanks for the vid though it's informative and fun
Maria is probably this generation's (Margaret and Maria) most innately talented one, but as things happen, she was raised and grew up without any passion for fighting and was not raised as a Knight, while Margaret did. It's speculation really but Maria acknowledges in her profile extra story that were their roles similar, she might have ended up fighting against Margaret. It's the only explanation as to how she managed to even survive getting bashed by seasoned competitors without having her arms fall off from exhaustion, every Nearl is a fucking warmachine. I think Maria settling on being something not really specified, like, at parts she makes armor, in others she's a mechanic...she kind of doesn't make sense. Craftmen cannot specialize in a thousand things, if she wants to be a mechanic, she has to work towards that, and if she wants to make equipment...same. I always thought that she was intended to be a late bloomer, someone that starts training kinda late but goes hard at it and supported by her own talent, she still reaches her full potential (although it should be impossible cuz she's really old by training standards). In my opinion, they can still salvage her character and I hope they do, I like that she has a passion and works for it, but I think she was meant to be a Knight and her arc was meant to bring her back towards being one, while still enjoying a bit of tinkering. I am really sad cuz I love Maria and I want her to reach a higher level, but I feel like leaving her as a non better specified crafter...just ruins her character more than anything. I hoped that, she'd kind of wake up in Rhodes Island, that seeing the world would spark something in her, but that didn't happen it seems. Which saddens me, she doesn't seem to have a future lore wise this way... Margaret's point in Near Light isn't really her own, I think her arc is by far not yet completed at all, we are currently waiting for the next major incident in Kazimierz where Margaret gets kicked out again and I hope that will have something to do with Mlynar's search. Margaret appears the least in her event cuz the event is about the Radiant Knight, not Margaret, which is highlighted in the meeting Margaret had with Shining, where they promise Magaret that they'll be with her in the end, when her light is forever dead and nobody remembers her, Margaret knows Kazimierz won't remember 'her' Kazimierz will remember the Radiant Knight. The event has a retro bitterness, Margaret will never really 'succeed' and she'll just open the road for the change, she won't be THE change. I think this is what confuses people about the whole event, cuz you would expect to be a more classic anime way of telling a story with a big MC, but it's really no that, and the solution to this is: "A knight is the noble light that illuminates the land", she shows the path, she doesn't build it, nor she walks it. She's basically sacrificing. Unfortunately, we REALLY need closure to her arc, we absolutely need the next piece to her story cuz Margaret was really left floating in the air without really giving anything besides a vague "she's working for it" which makes sense as well as certain things take time to be accomplished, especially politically. But we need the next part.
maria is a very delicate character. depending on what they do with her character, she will either be a terrible character, or a really fun one. if they dont do anything though, she will just stay mid. which is sad, because i kind of liked her in maria nearl. i didnt like her fights, but i did like her outside of the arena. she is clearly a good-natured person, and is never antagonistic towards anyone. she tries to understand people even if she doesnt agree with them. she is optimistic, and reasonable. its just a shame that her character got pushed to the side in near light. as for margaret, yes, you could say that she is meant to just be the radiant knight and not margaret, but that doesnt change the fact that she has like... no character. there is nothing about margaret that i can point to and say i like. she is boring, which is one of the worst things a character can be. maybe her character can still be salvaged, but idk, its going to be pretty rough. the foundation they made for her is too bland i feel.

there is something universal going on with this. everyone complains about their own language. every last language is stupid. i have never seen someone compliment their own language, its crazy.

An hour essay about AK Character isn't in my 2024 bingo list...
Mylnar is one of my favourit charackters, and you put the reason i like him into such nice words
One thing id point out is the reason the tournament knights suck so much is because there basically payed actors that constantly rigge matches for entertainemt if i remember right the whole reason maria won against the spear guy in black armour was because the sponsors told him to
Also platinum was sacred by the campaign knights and didn't want to fight them while she had no worries about Fighting any of the tournament knights
Yeah the plastic knight also lost because his new armor overheated and he only wore it cause his sponsors forced him to wear it.
Honestly, the part that i dont like bout the nearl story is how Margareth never actually solves anything or grows, the story says she really important, but she herself never managed much.
The bloodknight was the one that actually granted a chance for the infected
The pinus silvestris and others in the background are the ones that try to solve the issues happening around.
The bloodknight was the thing margareth could never be, he is a symbol that actually brought change, and he kept fighting for change
I hope a next event would actually let her do something.
for this video, i tried really hard to not talk about how badly her character was handled, but i still mentioned because i couldnt help myself. everyone is more interesting than her. her proving mlynar wrong was the only part of this video that i couldnt hype up well. not because mlynar was right, but because her wins always felt lackluster. that is the only stain that i can think of in regards to mlynar's development. if margaret had been a more interesting character, mlynar's story would have been much better. or maybe there is just something im missing about margaret's character, idk.

I heard arknights had a bustling amount of profound designs and worldbuilding, but riddled with issues in story writing, limited by the gacha medium.
not every character is like this. for example. i dont know how i would go about making a margaret video. because surprisingly, there isnt much there. some characters are just built different i guess.
an overblown issues which perpetuated in echoes
Arknights is basically a series of Chinese visual novels in different genres (there’s cosmic horror, wuxia, mafia, etc. episodes) in a thin tower defense gacha shell. I really don’t think the gacha holds it back since you get 50+ free units, it’s mostly just janky translated early chapters before it finds its feet.
@@RainywallaRoo the only thing that the 'gacha' aspect hold it back imo is the freedom for the authors. we have one of the biggest playable character roster in recent gachas currently that didn't include alter, and ofc with gacha you have to be careful with the playable. they can't be too evil or more a** than Mlynar maybe can't be on the opposing side (i hope AK might be diff), and ofc you can't kill them or maimed them that easily.
aside from that there's nothing else that could be detrimental really, the story pace progress a lot in just 5 yrs tackling all kind of storyline. and the model is by far my favorite, exploring the world by
different POV and 'mc' at the same time unlike where you just have one or two focuses that visiting each part of the world one by one like a tour or something
Ch'en suffers from this as well, often being a major character in a story that's ultimately about someone else.
got me thinking if there is a Mlynar mod for Elden Ring
I just got recently to arknights but Silverash and Mlynar absolute my faves. Your videos have intersting insights as well the humor in between is glorious. Looking forward to more of your work!🎉
Little note that never got mentioned but Mlynar shows up in a 4th event, at the very end of Zwillingsturme. Which is because Viviana found a spear with the Nearl family crest in the Witch King's pocket dimension. He has a grand total of 2 lines, but the way he's talking feels like he's much less apathetic due to the news.
damn, havent had time to read that event yet. oops.

I think the biggest example is A Death in Chunfen (the Qiubai event) which presents and discusses a lot of Confucianist elements, but the general discussions I've seen of the event have completely overlooked that.

i play Arknights because of waifus but this old man made me buy my first skin and made him my assistant, instead of a boing boing.
Hi, I'm a certified Mlynar expert. My credentials include writing a majority of english language (mlynar/toland) fics on ao3. I am writing this as I watch after I was delighted to see this in my recs. (Historians will say they were very good friends.)
I've spent a LOT of time examining the arknights timeline to get years and concepts of how old Mlynar is and his and Schnitz's involvements with the wars in Ursus and Leithania that the family was involved in.
arknights has this really strange tendency to hide the age of almost all of its characters. very few characters have confirmed ages.
Same goes about species/races. We are told, somewhere, that they all age differently, with no concrete details given @@thenoobjesus3102

Nice vid man.
very nice video btw, reminds me of the 3h videos of explanation abt Angela's character
