  • Dogs playing together in a shelter yard (like a dog park) for both people and dogs to watch. It's TV for dogs. Some barking dogs, but having fun.
The dogs are carefully monitored by trained handlers watching for any dog conflicts and avoiding/stopping them.
See the CC / subtitles for more details on the dogs.
Your views help provide funding for these dogs via Friends of Pima Animal Care Center, voted the Best Non-Profit in the Arizona Daily Star’s 2021, 2022 Readers’ Choice Awards: www.friendsofpacc.org/

There's an evaluation process with "helper" dogs who are very stable and handle difficult situations well. Our shelter currently only allows in dogs that do reasonably well in evaluation, so these dogs play well together. Dogs Playing for Life demonstrated to us that every dog can attend, although some require a muzzle and sometimes very careful oversight and handling starting in the catch pen. We currently don't have the staff to get every dog into a playgroup, but it's possible and nearly every dog gets a positive benefit from it. All the dogs go back to their kennel and have something positive to think about during the long hours at the shelter.

My dog loves these videos. He’s a chihuahua.

The shelter tried doing a play group with chihuahuas and other littles, and I hear it went well. It's too bad they don't do more of them. Seems like it would make for great videos. They generally keep the chihuahuas together in a large kennel, so they don't really need a separate playgroup.

This comes up every now and then in the comments. The leashes are on based on years of experience across hundreds of shelters. The biggest reason for the leashes is to stop conflict-driven dogs from joining into an altercation and injuring a dog that's already involved in the altercation. The leashes allows staff and volunteers who rush into the play yard to each grab a dog without having to grab the dogs' collars, which creates a high risk for a redirect bite. It also allows for staff and volunteers to separate dogs that are latched onto each other, standing by with the leashes until the latched-on dog unlatches either via a bite stick or distraction via an air horn, hose, or shake can. When an altercation happens with lots of dogs in the play yard, you really don't want to be close to any dog's teeth, due to redirection. And when it happens, there's a lot of chaos and fear for the humans trying to stop it.
The handlers could remove the leashes on some of the dogs based on their recently observed behavior in the play yard: some dogs are wise or fearful enough to stay away from the conflict, but it can be tricky to know ahead of time which ones they are. The shelter is a stressful place and dogs' behavior over time often degrades unexpectedly. With 400 to 500 dogs in the shelter, the playgroup handlers choose to leave nearly all the leashes on. I've seen a few exceptions lately for very well known dogs that are regulars in the daily playgroups.

You might try doing dog introductions and a play date with another dog (being careful about avoiding conflicts).

@@DogPlaygroupStories hm maybe I can try that, but her teeth are still pretty sharp and she does not know her strength, guess she’ll have to stick to yelling at the neighbors and playing with our other dog for now

I'm going to suggest this channel to a few people I know who struggle with how to handle their dogs meeting news ones. Plus Tonttu (Schipperke) just loves to watch.
