Wander - "They didn't explain that very well"
Game - has a text box right above all the instructions explaining said thing very clearly

Regarding doing things the hard way, art is one thing, but dont forget than in Engineering the availability of resources varies, and under typical circumstances, are never anywhere near what you would like, so knowing how to do things the hard way may be the only way. -An Engineering Major

Hermit mode is the best thing you can do for the first playthrough.
The goal is to finish the game without the pressure of being good at it, then turn on the statistics and go to easy levels and use everything you learned to make it optimised.

Also, minor tip if he wants it (so if he reads this comment for whatever reason):
in many of the early levels (and this is a good design idea for later levels too), if you are not always picking up a reagent or moving the currently held reagent off its starting location, you are probably not as fast as you can be. On the level for "stabilized water", you should always be moving reagents out of the input. This requires multiple arms to do (since one arm cant be moving the reagent AND picking up another one at the same time), and it will probably require extending arms (or tracks) to do it well. In general, I found that faster solutions required having multiple different arms dedicated to just pulling things out at all times (not like the 6 ended arm, I mean 2 arms with 1 end). This means your design to get minimum cycles will use way more parts than necessary, but thats just inherent since you can make several chapters worth of levels using a single extender arm and the other devices that need to be there for making the product.
Hope that helps. I could also probably show off what my designs looked like to accomplish these things, but that would be past "if he reads this comment" which is already unlikely to happen.

For stabilized water I made a looping track on each side with 8 arms on each, and put the water, glyph and product in the middle. (Turned out I only needed 6 arms before I win, but this maintains maximum output even after beating the level, by having the track loop around)

This reminds me of _Portal Bridge-Builder,_ but less frenetic.

Frenetic is more like a continuous process of being awesome. Frantic is more panicky.
