  • Acrylic secondary glazing is a cheap way to make your home warmer. Here's how to fit and install it yourself. We have a sample 30cm x 30cm piece of secondary glazing with the magnetic tape in place if you want to see whether it would fit your windows. Email reach@hgsra.uk to borrow it.

I bought these last year and found they made quite a big difference. However, since putting the glazing back on i found the magnetic strip has lost some of its magnetism in places . Any idea how i can correct that if at all possible?

If it's just one strip, I suggest removing the tape and replacing. It's not expensive. Amazon have it in various widths and thicknesses to match what's on the window already. Note that to ensure polarity matches, you will need to replace the tape on both the secondary glazing and the window frame.
If multiple strips have failed then there may be a manufacturing issue, I suggest contacting the retailer.

I wonder if moisture would be trapped, causing misting/condensation? I guess a lot less than the condensation of the single glazed alone.

Hi, in my home condensation was reduced to almost zero. If you still get a lot of condensation with secondary glazing then this may be an indication that your main glass window is not waterproof.

Im my house secondary glazing has eliminated my serious condensation problem. You only get condensation between the panes if water is leaking in from outside.

Hi, I would think that a competent home handyperson - the sort of person who puts up pictures and does other odd jobs - would be able to handle this. There are companies that will come to your house, measure up and fit, but it would be considerably more expensive. However, even at a much higher price I would say this is good value. In my own home the difference has been dramatic.

If your spending about £300 for these then whats the payback period? is it even worth it.

I work from home and sit next to a large window all day. Before the secondary glazing I was often cold and sometimes sat with a blanket on my knee. That no longer happens. Spending £300 to make my house more comfortable sounds like good value.

Who gives a crap about carbon footprint? Everyone talks about it but no one actually cares..
