You are literally the most underrated street photog on youtube! I love your approach to street photography and how you interact with your subjects. Your videos are great, Frederik keep killin it
When I was young (many years ago) this camera was the Rolls Royce of cameras. The resolution was incredible. Very easy to use. If you get a chance the Nikonos underwater camera is also worth a look. Tough but very clear photography. My dad dropped it from a helicopter in Viet Nam from 500 m . He found it and kept shooting.
Dude, I do not really know how to say it, but I LOVE THIS CHANNEL!!! I mean, you share your work with us and you always motivate to take pictures! Awesome work
It’s so good to see a channel where the photos you take are actually awesome. There a few channels out there showing off old cameras where the photos they compose are average. Great work and great attitude towards photography and people.
That camera is a joy! When you consider how old the technology is in it, the quality of the images blows your mind! I’m really looking forward to future videos with this incredible and beautiful work of art from Rolleiflex. Thank you
The camera was probably really stealthy back in the day but now its so iconic that it attracts immediate attention. That is actually one of the reasons why I would like to get one: people seem sort of eager to be photographed with it :)
Congrats on getting your dream camera. I just got mine a few weeks ago. A Nikon f3. I've wanted one ever since I was in high school in the late 1980's and met a genuine photojournalist who was shooting a local event with one. It was my opinion then and today that it's one of the most beautiful cameras ever made. There was no way I could afford it back then, but recently I found one at a bargain price and made that dream come true.
If you like Nikons and the F line, try the F4 or F5. They are still reasonably priced. The F4 is forward and backward lens compatible and the F5 is as modern as any pro DSLR.
Bought my 2.8f about 2 months ago. I pick it up almost every day and and am always amazed at the quality it exudes. Halfway through my second roll. The camera demands attention, and people LOVE asking about it! If you want to meet people, this is the camera to carry! Good luck, your pics are great!
My uncle had a Rolleiflex and looking down that view finder is just something else. Magical is the only word I could use to describe it. And at that time I wasn't even into photography yet.
2.8F with the Planar is an amazing camera. The Xenotar model is a bit more rare and performs very well too. I rebuild these along with Hasselblad V series cameras as my primary business. Once you start the addiction of medium format, it is hard too quit. Thanks for the video.
Stumbled upon this video, because I just received a 1949/50 Rolleiflex. Can't wait to get out on the street with it! You have a very joyful way of being out in the community, making a beautiful record of people, lives, and places. Plus, you have a terrific eye for detail and composition. Thanks for sharing!
Yeeeees more analogue, he’s becoming one of us. Don’t worry too much about exposure, as long as you’re giving it more light not less negative film is very forgiving to exposures being wrong. Also dang a 2.8f that can’t have been cheap. Haha $3k you even said.
I'm inspired by your approach to the people you photograph. Even if you don't need the practice, that line is perfect for dis arming your subject. And for me... I do need to practice both my photo skills and my Spanish. So glad I found your channel.
IMO the one and only real medium format photography because of the square image results, this and all its special photogaphic challanges are the essence of this format and what makes it so special and unique, digital or analog is irrelevant, well done 👍😊
When I was a kid in the mid 1950s I helped my father develop his black and white Rolleiflex negatives in his darkroom in our house in the San Francisco area. He died in 2003 but I possess all of the negatives today and what a blast it is to make prints from them via my computer and Photoshop Elements!
Don't get confused whit contrast, TRI X is not contrasty, perhaps what you need is overexpose 1/3 and develop normal and a good rule of thumb is expose for the shadows/develop for the highlights, very entertaining blog, cheers.
I have a 2.8GX and an old T, love them so much. They are even more stealthy for street photography than Leica M because you're not looking at people and most people don't even realise that you have a camera and behave naturally. And they are silent. Your pictures look great, makes me want to go outside and shoot more.
Hace años hacía streetphotograpy Me has hecho extrañar capturar la belleza citadina y su impresionante espontaneidad. Espero encontrarte en algunas de estas locas calles algún día. Lotes of hugs frome Azcapotzalco, CDMX!
Loved this video man. Your enthusiasm makes it. Like a kid in a sweet shop. It's nice to get your dream camera. You only live once. Enjoy. New subscriber!
I have not read all the comments and l don’t know how you are developing these. With a 6 x 6 Neg, one can push/pull the exposure in the darkroom! It is half the fun!
I LOVE these photos! Just enough of the contrast and, honestly, being a bit closer will bring more emotion.. for me, that’s my opinion. I was emotionally invested the photo of the girl putting the makeup on. I think too, that since your looking down, like you said, you’ll be able to get closer and that will make you enjoy your work even more
You got some really nice photos from this camera, Frederick. It was also nice to watch you critique your photos. Definitely do more Street walks with this camera.
I absolutely enjoyed this video. Your content is so authentic! The results are stunning, these cameras were built so well, it's almost unbelievable to see such crisp and sharp results from a 50-years old camera.
I remember those cameras and the excellent results they created. I was taking photography in highschool and was able to Afford the Yaschica 124 and it did a great job for me. Now for street a low profile Pen F with the Olympus 17mm f1.8 is My new favorite.
Great video. I really liked the authentic emotion upon receiving the camera, and also your approach to the people you photograph. Obviously you're a good guy!
You have probably answered this, but why not just develop the photos yourself? in the long run its cheaper. Congrats on the new camera! I have a Mamiya C3 and a Yashica 635 for my TLRs both take wonderful photos.
My dads friends dad passed a few years ago and he gave me one. It's just been sitting on my office desk. Finally looked at it didn't realize how much there are worth! Going to order film ASAP! Need to clean the lenses and all that but it's in decent shape other than some dirt. Might break it down and complelty clean inside
While your KEH purchase was expensive, at least everything seems to work. It seems like most exposure meters on the older cameras don’t work, and they are hard to get fixed. I was told there are no parts available to fix the light meter on my E model Rolleiflex. I have purchased a few other types of vintage cameras on EBay, and there is something wrong with all but one of them! Good luck.
Frederik, congrats!! I have the 3.5f & 2.8f...they are my favorite cameras by far. The square 120 format is a really fun shape to compose within, and the FEEL of the camera, from how it sits in your hands to the *click* of the shutter is just so satisfying, isn’t it?? I really liked the man on the bench, and the woman by the old door. These cameras are absolute treasures, and to me, I’m inspired every time I pick them up, as it’s obvious you are. Looking forward to more! 🙌🏼
Nice camera. TLR cameras are definitely not sneaky. But a good talking point. Expensive shooting but great results. You could have got a cheap lubitel TLR for $20 or so, but what a camera the Rollei is..
Check out the Yashica 635. It shoots 35mm (with an adapter kit) as well as 120 film. Costs about 1/5 as much as the Rollei. For 120 TLR versatility, check out the Mamiya C330f Pro. Built like a tank and has interchangeable lenses. You could have bought an entire C330f outfit for the cost of the Rollei.
Man, this video reminded me of when I held my dream camera for the first time, in my case a Hasselblad 500cm. They are difficult cameras, but as you say, addictive, and very interesting. What I don't understand is that rollei are so expensive compared to hassel. Congratulations
@@AnchorTH Definitely not. Most Americans are full of themselves or have a superiority complex.. Less willing to help, more guarded, less small talk... living in Mexico is a different experience for sure lol
To be fair the questions of the US people were more of interest in photography (mentioning the camera, asking if he was shooting color or black and white) than of concern to what he was doing taking photos
Frederik, that camera was meant for you. The square format suits your street eye. There's a different kind of "magic" in your images now. Much more classic look and clean composition. Cheers! *I would buy a zine of your first rolls!
I was lucky enough to get one of these that someone had put out for the trash. Was in mint condition with the leather case and a bunch of accessories included. I picked it out of the trash 3 days ago and since then I struggle to put it down. Can't wait to go out and shoot some photos. I even 3d printed a lens hood for it.
Love your enthusiasm! I have two rolleis that were in worse condition than yours (but fraction of the price); a Rollei 2,8 like yours, with no meter and with a few superficial scratches on the lens, and a R. Automat 3.5 where the shutter gets stuck on slow speed. The 2,8 is amazingly sharp, a repair guy here even measured it to be top notch sharpness. When I first get a new camera I shoot a roll of E6 slide film, with a lot of bracketing. That way I learned exactly how it behaves with exposure. I normally use them with Weston batteryless light meters.
Some great photos and the Rolleiflex is a fantastic camera. I got my Rolleiflex Automat recently with a bunch of accessories for a great price in beautiful condition from a local shop. I have been really enjoying shooting with it and I love TLRs.
A fine machine you have got. I own a Rolleicord Va without lightmeter but you don't really need it these days, there's a bunch of smartphone apps that will do the job. I agree with you, Ilford is more forgiving a film, I usually shoot FP4 125 and reserve the Tri X for 35mm (I shoot a Contax II and a Nikon FM2, both great cameras and gorgeous looking also) snapshots. My Rollei cost me less than 400$, 3,5 aperture, sturdy as a sledgehammer. That's another advantage of the Rollei. Combined with the leatherband it makes an excellent defensive weapon. You can knock off any knave's teeth with a single blow. One gizmo you may like to use is a cable trigger. It makes you much more unconspicuous and it helps a lot with slower speeds.
Honestly when I see the angle of view in comparison to the GoPro, the video looks soo much more immersive than the portraits. I feel there is a lot of story the viewer is missing out on. Having using the camera for a while now, what do have to say about it in terms of composition?
I did a video similar with/ a Yashica TLR inspired by vivian mayer, my meter isnt working so I rely on the sunny 16 rule, it works great with a camera like that!
My absolute favourite camera. Took mine on it´s last trip to Mexico in 2018. Lived there in the 90s. It has some heavy damage to the hood but still functions. Need to fix it..... Hey, learn Sunny 16 if you shoot film. You really dont need a meter after practicing. Thanks for the vids. I enjoy your channel.
That camera is very nice! You could also get a Yashica Mat 124 G. My Dad had one in the sixties, and that is how I learn photography. I had a couple of those in the seventies and took some beautiful photos with them. If you are in a budget, you can find them at KEH and eBay for a much more reasonable price.
Wonderful, welcome to Rolleis! I have a 3,5F and really like the medium format. Try some Ektar 100 color film and you will be amazed! Have fun, I love CDMX!
I had the same reaction when I shot my first roll with the Rolleiflex 2.8E2 - just a joy to use. I have the Leica M3, which I had before getting the Rollei, but I must admit, the Rollei is more fun to shoot. I think it has to do with the process, a little more involved than the Leica- I love both of them, though. Just a reminder, be aware of your surroundings when you're out shooting with that camera, it draws attention. Enjoy!
Great photos as always! That Rolleiflex shoots like a dream! Seeing this makes me want to go out and buy a TLR medium format camera (one that is more in my price range) but I keep having to remind myself that I already have 6 cameras and I don't have enough space for another one lol
the 80mm lens is approx 50mm fov in 35mm square format? and the f2.8 depth of field is equal to what....? great vid. thanks for the effort and the sharing. thumbs up.
Amazing camera purchase Frederik! and even more amazing images! I picked up a Yashica Mat 124 recently and finally put my first roll through it, it was so much fun!
Have been owning a Rolleiflex E with the 2.8 Planar (mind you, in perfect working order) for 31 years and wanted to sell it yesterday. The dealer offered me 375 EUR 🧐. Have decided to keep it, and this film has confirmed my decision.
Congratulations on your new tool! I have a Rolleiflex New Standard from March, 1939 according to the serial number. What this camera and its uncoated lens does with shadows is amazing. I hope you have as much fun with yours as I do with mine!
I’ve wanted this camera since I began doing street photography. I'm SO excited about this! I bought my Rolleiflex 2.8F here: shrsl.com/3yebs.

Crazy how film cameras instantly transport you back in time
I love the Rolleiflex. It is so light and compact that it is a joy to walk around with. I use a hood on mine to reduce flare in backlit situations.

Enjoy!
These photos were so incredible.
Your energy and passion is unmatched and so contagious! Thanks for the vid man
Gorgeous camera and very nice pictures! Bela câmera e fotos muito boas!
Congratulations on your new tool! I have a Rolleiflex New Standard from March, 1939 according to the serial number. What this camera and its uncoated lens does with shadows is amazing. I hope you have as much fun with yours as I do with mine!
Beautiful camera and nice shots
Thanks Juan!
