Brilliant breakdown. To me, this is David Lynch’s masterwork. I saw it on Ashby Ave. in Berkley during its first run and have been a sucker for it ever since.
I recently saw an interview with Lynch in which he revealed that Hopper was supposed to lip synch Candy Colored Clown but couldn’t remember the lyrics and kept flubbing it. Stockwell knew the lyrics by heart so Lynch had him perform it instead. Lynch then went on to say that while rehearsing Stockwell improvised by grabbing a work light to use as his “microphone” in the scene.
Apparently, Lynch was not thrilled with how the scene was coming together up until that point when it all came together in that moment. This was his take on the importance of serendipity during the actual shootIng process.
